    A great show Fellas that is very informative and will help beginners get interested in a fascinating sport. A few tips, if I may, to the newbies who follow you. I've been whistling foxes for over 50 years (not so much lately as an affliction of old age has slowed me down a lot) and never used anything other than cheap button whistles. 1. You can hold them in your mouth and leave both hands free and be ready to shoot the moment the fox stops( No moving hands etc when the fox is in close). 2. Properly positioning yourself, to support camouflage techniques. The only foxes I've shot over 20 yards, have been shot and missed by a nervous or inexperienced companion, as the fox stops just before disappearing into a creek or gully. 3. If the fox doesn't come and try to sit in your lap I would consider your Whistling technique and camouflage against your back ground as all whistles etc will attract foxes no matter ho much you want to pay for them. Just wearing camo gear doesn't mean they can't see you ( an enormous help though) . How you move from spot to spot and the amount of movement and noise you make before and particularly after starting to whistle makes a huge difference to your results. Treat the fox as if it's going to shoot you if he gets on to you first and your success rate will improve. That's what my Old Man taught me and said if your not getting a 95%+ kill rate on what you see, your doing something wrong?????? As you have said a lot of effort and hard work goes into shooting foxes......make the most of it and don't waste any of it.

    Bought the Maxtoch Shooter torch on your recommendation Steve. WOW. What a torch. I've never had one in such a portable size before. Picking out hares and bunnies at 400m easily, had had two great night varminting sessions with this torch. It's great for scanning for possums in the trees at a distance and I can see its going to get a lot of hours chasing nighttime pigs too. Just need to remember to take a spare set of fully charged batteries for a full evening. Very pleased, thanks for posting this video.

    Dave they are definitely awesome. Pretty impressive light that comes from such a portable little unit. My spotlight doesn't come out very much anymore. How long the LED last's will be interesting to see but I would buy another without thinking twice about it. Interesting to see how LED torches improve from this in the future. Get yourself a few pairs of the Blazer batteries and you will be good to go well into the dark. Hope all is well with you mate. Take care and shine bright

And let’s not talk about the foxes - someone must be whistling shooting and missing them because the bastards head for the hills as soon as I whistle! Not even a second look back :(

  • @BoltActionProductions

    @BoltActionProductions

    .22 will do the job reliably out to 50mtrs if you use good hollow point bullets and hit the fox in the head. 50-100mtrs .17HMR is good and beyond that .222, .223 and .204 is what we use.

    Steve, is the calicivirus a planned release by the state agencies or is it a unauthorised release by a local action group? We’ve had some very interesting conflicts around the use of calicivirus, it was acquired by some privateers who were fed up with a lack of action on public land. Agree it is devastating on the rabbits but just like myxomatosis was back in the 80s it will be back once their immune systems work out how to defeat it!

  • @BoltActionProductions

    @BoltActionProductions

    6 жыл бұрын

    Dave that is a very good question and one I don't have the exact answer for. I am pretty sure it was an organised release but often these locations and dates are kept confidential. I believe this is a different strain to the original and apparently the rabbits that survive the first bout will not build up an immunity. I really doubt this but time will tell. At the moment our locations that use to yield high numbers have been decimated with numbers being at their lowest for the last 18 months.

And hey - real Christmas needs real snow :-)

    Thanks mate. Very nice of you. Factory rounds for Finnlight .308? I don't normally fire any factory rounds through my rifles unless we just want to test, which is not enough to really answer you question with any accuracy. If you were handloading I would suggest the 130gr Barnes TTSX as the Finnnlight's barrel is a little short to get the 150's running hard enough to expand. Snow? What's that? HaHa. 41deg Celsius here in a couple of days. Makes for good hunting. LOL

    What kind of run time do you get out of the torches????

  • @BoltActionProductions

    @BoltActionProductions

    6 жыл бұрын

    Torches are always run on low power until we spot a set of eyes. Once we have confirmed our target and the rifle is at the ready the light go's on high. Using them this way never very often sees us go through a set of batteries in one night. Specifications for run times are available from the manufacturers.

  • @BoltActionProductions

    I have never worried about filters. Personally I think they are a waist of time. They reduce the performance of the light so much. Perfecting your timing between putting the light on the fox and shooting is more important IMO.

    Hi Lads, love the vids, can you comment on .223 vs .22.250 for foxes. Im a whistler, so most are in within 100m, but I get a couple sometimes spooked running away and then when i whistle look back at around 300-400m. Will a .223 still knock them? Also are you thinking of going night vision or using thermal monoculars? In the west our foxes are spotlight shy

  • @BoltActionProductions

    @BoltActionProductions

    6 жыл бұрын

    Glad you enjoy the videos mate. .223 all the way for me. A standard 1 in 12 barrel shooting 55gr ballistic tip projectiles will handle foxes quite easily to the distances you mention if you develop a good handload. Knowing that loads trajectory and wind drift is the key. When you master this you are well on your way.

    thankyou, that gives me great reassurance. Looks like I am getting a Tikka T3 X with a 20" 1/8 barrel. Ive been told that it should be good with 50- 55 grain. I'm not a re-loader, but Im told Sierra 50 grain Blitzking might be worth trying. Thanks for all the advice, cheers mate

  • @BoltActionProductions

    @BoltActionProductions

    6 жыл бұрын

    That would not be my choice of rifles. I am sad to say but often advice is given backed on what hasn't sold well. The standard length barrel with a 1 in 12" twist would be my preferred option and far better suited to 55gr projectiles. The 1 in 8 is designed for far heavier projectiles than you mention and you want every bit of barrel length to achieve the cartridges full velocity. The Blitzkings in 55gr would be a good choice if you are going to use factory ammo. To get the full potential from that rifle handloading will always achieve this. Keep me posted on how you go.

    Based on your recommendation I managed to find a Tikka T3X lite with 20" barrel in 1/12 twist. Will be sticking to the lighter 55gn round, so i think this will be ideal for flat trajectory, high speed and good distance. Regarding sighting it in, should I zero at 50m so it shoots a bit high at 100m and should zero at about 200m? What is your advice on sighting and ballistics of the .223 round in 55 gn?

    Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it. Don't hunt in QLD very often but have chased pigs and wild dogs up there in the last few years. Conditions at the time will play a big factor in the way you hunt. If you are not using dogs to find your pigs you will have to do a bit more homework. If it is extremely hot and dry you will need to be around any water early morning and late afternoon waiting. The bigger boars don't often move until after dark especially if it is really hot. When hunting without dogs you will be doing a lot more work but if you find the water and good feed you will most likely stumble across the pigs and wild dogs at some stage, usually when you are not ready.

    Bolt-Action Productions I have been on the property a number of times for the last 12mths. A good variaity of pigs and multiple Sowders. There isn't a feral number making tracking challenging. There is a river through the property with 3 locations heavily dug up. I think I have two options traps or monitor with cameras to get times. I just watched all your vids on packs, really informative. I've yet to do a hunt with packs. Still in the 'Stay near the 4wd because it's scary in the dark' stage. I have just created my channel with my 1st vid to go up on my next trip out. If you don't mind me mentioning your channel. Really hard to find genuine Austrlian channels to learn and interact with. Hey bud, Can you get paid for hunting foxes in Australia?

  • @BoltActionProductions

    @BoltActionProductions

    6 жыл бұрын

    Many people have made a good living out of shooting foxes over the years and in the 70's this was probably at its peak with the fur trade boom. The money is not really there to that level anymore. As foxes are an introduced species in Australia the government in many states pay a bounty. Often this is paid on scalps or tails. So you can get paid for hunting foxes but you have to put the time in.

    They are still around but a lot of places we have hunted for years have changed dramatically when it comes to the foxes food source. Sheep have been replaced with cattle, rabbits numbers have been decimated and over the years we have hit these properties pretty hard. For the farmers this is great. Not so good for us Fox shooters.
