That's ok though. Not to get too personal or serious on a silly video, but you could follow these tips and it's still ok. Have you ever heard the saying "the perfect is the enemy of the good"? A lot of fine examples of that mantra in here. That black binbag full of clothes to donate, for example? It may not have made it to the car, but it's now bagged up ready to go to the car for when one feels like they can tackle that. Dealing with "the closet"? Sure everything should have a place and be in it, but there's no reason the closet can't be the place for those, figuring out what the best place for something is can be a process. Paperwork? You don't have to spend all day meticulously collating it by topic and sender etc. So long as you've got a safe place for the stuff you know for a fact is important you're doing better than you could be doing. If you want a simple way to sort that stuff, just sort it by date received and then everything's in some sort of order so you can locate it if needed and it's almost 0 maintenance. Is it perfect? No, but if worrying about attaining perfection is getting in the way of organizing your life, just aim for functional. Taking little baby steps when you feel like you can will get you way further than you'd ever imagine. Now the Japanese school of thought says the way to decide what to keep and get rid of is to ask yourself what brings you joy; I don't know about you, but I'm clinically depressed, material possessions almost never bring me any joy. HOWEVER the process of trying for functional over perfect has a solution with an example perfectly encapsulated in the video you just watcheed. That black bag? Have you stopped seeing it yet? That means you haven't been in it for anything in months, what that tells you is that there's almost definitely nothing in there that you will miss, so you know you can throw it away. Wall of text, not what I was expecting from myself either. Now my life isn't perfect, it's a GD mess, and the only reason I don't feel too depressed and anxious to actually hit reply on this is because the fever from the chest infection I'm fighting right now is slowing my brain down too much for it to torment me with doubt at the moment but I don't regret writing this. If it doesn't apply to you, I'm sorry for wasting your time and I wish you a great life, but if it did I'm glad and I still wish you a great life

I always keep important documents and family photos in suitcases so I can rationalize that if there's a fire I can save what counts even if the suit case is open and laying on its side so if I pick it up everything will scatter out and I'll burn alive trying to scoop laminated papers off of a wood floor into a silky lined suitcase with fake nails 🙃

When I used to move between my mom's house and dad's house clothes were a scary gamble because I would not know what clean good looking things I had at each place. plus I would have to be flexible with my parents wreck of a schedule so I would play it safe by bringing so many things back and fourth. now (trusty tip right here) my paranoia is so bad that I don't bother unpacking my clothes. now I put my clean folded clothes in my suitcase right by my dresser. it looks really sad every time.

Sounds like an explanation of benefits, I got a few of those recently. It says how much your insurance paid so you feel good about them, but it just annoys you instead. More than half the time they paid 100% of what's on the bill & when they don't you can't pay your deductible using the explanation of benefits; you need to wait until the real bill shows up that again tells you how much your insurance already paid.

There are two types of mail: mail you're expecting and mail that just showed up. Examples of mail you're expecting: your renewed car registration, the bill from your doctor visit last month, your W-2 form. Keep those. You probably already know how to deal with them. Any mail that just showed up--toss it. If it's really important, whoever sent it will send it again when you don't reply. If it's not, there's no need to keep it. Unless you get a letter from the IRS you weren't expecting. In that case, get a lawyer right away, you're going to need one.

“Too scared to throw stuff out but too stupid to know how to deal with it.” That was the best line of the whole video in my opinion. It spoke to me personally. It recognizes how unsure we are about what’s important to us and how we’re too stupid to be able to deal with the whole dilemma. It’s really an existential human phenomenon.

Weirdly enough these videos (and the Grant ones) actually make me feel pretty good because they're talking about things I didn't know a lot of other people do, but I don't always do them. I don't feel like the only loser who leaves thrift store donations in his car for way too long when people are making jokes about it. And sometimes I drive right there within a day or two!

i moved in my current apartment like almost two years ago and put some clothes in a bag so i could "go through them later and pick out everything that can be donated or sold and throw the rest away" then i put that bag in a nook between the bookshelf and a wall then i put a piece of wood in front of it now i'm supposed to be moving out again and it's still there. maybe if i take it with me, i can hide it in a different place and forget about it for two years

If anyone else is stuck with the "I don't know what to do with this" papers, scan them, then throw out the physical paper. That way on the offchance you need it in the future you're set, but you've also gotten rid of the clutter.

My room is perfectly tidy, if you disregard all the dust, the pile of folded clothes on top of the microwave, the bag of what is likely more clothes next to it, the broken SNES game uselessly laying about without an SNES in sight, the empty cardboard boxes next to the trash can that used to contain food, the assortment of lint and dead bugs (absolutely no live ones) that litter the carpet, the box of Halloween decorations and costumes (which I'm actually going to move to the storage room right after typing this), the disconnected Wii U that I haven't used since I got a Nintendo Switch, and the random empty plastic bag on top of it.

Before television existed, the "Fibber McGee & Molly" show was famous for having a closet that was so full its contents would collapse on the person that opened the door. That's an inspiration for The Mike Trapp System for Clutter Removal.
