Four speed swap 72' Nova

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this episode we convert our 2 speed powerglide automatic 72' nova to a four speed bang shifting muscle machine. As always with this car we are building on a budget so our four speed swap is assembled using mostly free, borrowed, and used parts.

    I had something similar with your shifter you're talking about! If you flip the lever on the reverse on the side of the transmission so it's pointing the opposite way it would/should work with that shifter you were talking about (that comes back to go into reverse). Cool swap man! I went through something similar putting a 4 speed in my '70 Monte Carlo. Thanks for sharing! And yeah, the Hurst 4 speed stuff is stupid expensive, it took me a while to track one down but I bought a Hurst Comp 4 speed for $75 on marketplace, it's the next swap I'll be doing to switch out the ITM that came on my trans. I think it's the cheapest one I've seen in the last 3 years anyways lol

    Haha, I know that “free” feeling. When I was a poor 20 year old trying to do the four speed changeover on my Chevelle I ended up with both a Saginaw four speed and an early T10 for something like $50. I lucked out and the T10 turned out to be a fairly valuable trans. I ended up rebuilding it and sold it for a good chunk of change. Was able to snag a Super T10 with the proceeds.

    I like it you got everybody involved in it and you your video went very smooth not a whole lot of talk you're talking was good information and I laugh about the hole in the floor yeah you start out it's going to be perfect and he's got to go bigger and bigger and bigger what we used to do is make the whole plenty big and then get a nice piece of sheet metal that you can measure and cut and do the right hole and you screw it right over the top and it looks Factory because some are that way from the factory they just have a plate for different shifters

    If you are considering a manual a T-5 is a good choice too. You can build them up to be "pretty" tough and they are budget friendly. An AL flywheel helps a lot as does a hydraulic TO bearing. Great build, awesome cars... you do great work. Subscribed.

    Going through a 4-speed conversion on my '72 Nova right now - bought a Saginaw and then decided to go with a M20 Muncie after I found one for cheap. Have the exact issue with the Hurst Competition plus shifter, reverse did not want to go forwards. Solution was to flip the transmission side linkage bracket down instead of up, and now it will shift into reverse by moving shifter across-left then backwards. Not ideal but that's how I've made it work.

  • @hatchsrecreationalengineer1997

    @hatchsrecreationalengineer1997

    I had considered doing that actually but I didnt like the idea of bang shifting the car from first to second and potentially ram rodding it into reverse instead of second while slamming it backwards.

    Mike guy comment is right just have to flip it around on the transmission. Unless you would like to shift at like some old Fords. Great job. And it was very enjoyable to see somebody's face light up the way you did when it came together. By the way I ran a 3 speed Saginaw for very long time 9327 with a floor shifter. Is it better than a 4-speed from my setup in a quarter mile. You know these 5-speed or if you will for speed with overdrive manual transmissions and Dodge trucks back in the 80s. The clutch housing or as we called the hog head for the Chrysler will not bolt up to you or small block Chevy. But there's plenty of Chevy clutch houses out there that will do the job. We all know it isn't the name tag on the car. It's more so the name on the transmission of the manufacturer. But now those those $300 Dodge trucks don't exist.

    I thought that that might have been the case with mine however even when I disconnected the linkage from the shifter it still would not go over and back. So even flipping that lever would not have worked in my particular case.

    I have been daily driving my 72’ with that transmission and it has been totally fine. I do occasionally beat on it to do burnouts and power shifts but it has been totally good so far. Keep in mind though that that small block isn’t making a lot of power and I’m running a relatively small wheel/tire (255/60/15x8 street tires). Only part that sucked about the Saginaw was trying to acquire shift linkage for it.

    4 speed ,bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and pilot bearing (in back of crankshaft) all need to be removed. You will need a flexplate, different starter, trans lines to radiator, vacuum modulator line. Next big thing will be linkage. You will need to remove all Z bar stuff, change pedals, and depending on where you want your shifter to be will determine that stuff. Column shift will require and auto trans steering column, whereas a floor shifter will allow you to keep your existing steering column. Let me know if you have any other questions
