A look at a pen from Jinhao. Big, good writer. If you like em large this may be a pen for you. Available from many sources including Goulet Pens

I love these 159's. Recently I bought a 159 with a fude nib and it's now my all-time favourite pen. It writes and draws buttery smooth and I just love the screw-down cap.

A pen I bought 4 years ago. An orange brass pen. I removed the chrome plating on the cap band to show the brass and I put a gold toned Jowo 1.1 stub nib on it. A friend of mine admired the size, colour and brass showing weathered look of it, and when he wrote with it was blown away. I gave it to him and bought another in green this year. I miss that orange one that so I will buy another in that colour again and maybe try one of the Jinhao 1.1 stubs that are coming on the market for it. The Jowo nibs are excellent although 5 times the price.

Excellent. Jowo nibs expensive relative to 159 price, In the end, if you enjoy the pen, priceless.

Ahh...little white parcels from China, lots of good things come in those packages, just ordered that pen in gold. They make em in lots of colours now.

Love my 159! I had a stroke, so that the "primary size crayon in the hands of a very small toddler" vibe of this pen works great for me (less chance of dropping it.) Like another comment says, the quality control seems pretty good, now, too. Mine writes wet and well, and though it's too massive to carry regularly, I quite like it. It seems to share nibs and feeds with the x450 and x750, as well. Baoer and Jinhao are made by the same parent company, so, though I am happy with the Jinhao pens I have, I'm going to be trying Baoer as well (though they seem like they may be too narrow to be truly comfortable for me. Here's hoping, and if not, I'm not going to be out a ton of money.)

Thanks for your video. I have three of these 159's and I think the quality control this last year has been much improved. All three work fabulously and smooth, with no leakage. I was thinking of putting a jowo 1.1 on one of them. For a MB knockoff, this pen is astounding for the price. And probably the closest I'll ever come to owning a 149 given my budget.

And it will write great with a 1.1mm stub. I enjoy all writing instruments independent of price. For me the lower the price, the better the value.

@@chrisrap52 Again, thank you for your great, unbiased, "this pen would work better if you used my nib, etc." I like that you are not a snob reviewer, and was willing to give this pen a shot at greatness. This is a month later, and I'm still fascinated by these pens.

The great reason for using these inexpensive pen is if you lose them its not the end of the world and this one is a bargain.

I have this exact pen, color and all and I love it. Like you said, it is hefty, but feels well balanced in hand. Mine also is a wet writer, but in a good way, and I've never had any drops like that. I bought mine on e-bay for $5.00, some places charge ten. I like to go to Jet pens or Goulet when I'm putting out a bit of money, as I don't trust an eighty dollar pen on e-bay in the midst of all those other really cheap pens. I could be wrong, but I'll go with my gut. Blessings to you sir.

Going with the gut works for me. There is a lot of variation in these inexpensive mass produced Chinese pens. Overall I find most a great value. There are some duds but that can happen with any purchase. Buying from a US source provides some insurance as it is easier to return pen.

Chrisrap52, love your videos. Have bought a few of pens based on your educational reviews. I'm curious.....what kind of digital weighing scale did you use on this video of the Jinhao 159? I was thinking of getting one for myself. Thanks and more power!

I bought mine on eBay. Search for "scale digital 0.01". Also on Amazon. I paid less than $10. I look for one that uses AA or AAA batteries. Easier to replace & last linger.

Purchased one of these in blue from a brick & mortar store in India for 400 rupees, around 6 usd. Surprisingly good nib and feed. I have a MB 149, and is very similar in size, an obvious ripoff. The huge difference is the weight and the gorgeous nib on the 149, The MB is much lighter, and easier to use for long writing sessions. Anyway, still enjoy using it.

A nice review, Chris. I have seen later reviews of the 159 and they classified the pen as a paper weight. Do you still like the pen? I do like the X159 a lot and would rather stay with that one, especially since I sealed the end finial to the barrel and made it an eyedropper fill pen.

+Matthew White Actually, it's a deal between eBay, USPS and the postal service. They provided some additional services from China, Hong Kong, maybe other countries, to make the small parcel distribution faster and cheaper. There are just so many goods that travel from China to all around the world, that these small packages can be taxed with very low prices. Now, what stuns me it's the price of these pens. I mean, it's just too low. Some poor kids and workers are working for free in order to make this pens available at $1, and that might not be pretty.

or.. some one realized they can make TONS in a factory and sell the best in a shop at full retail, and blow the rest out at uber cheap for advertising .. I recommend not believing the worst...

+Matthew White I agree, once you set up the machines, make a ton of them. Sell some at full retail to cover costs, the rest are all profit. Also. Currency manipulations. Cash rules. Inventory is a liability. Any revenue stream is good. Many ways to explain how one can purchase an item for less than the shipping costs. Shipping takes many weeks, goes by boat. Explains low costs. In the end, as a consumer I can't complain.
