Justin Musselman no one who trimmed her would have knowingly left the broken tip in her hoof. The knife most likely broke and the tip was not found. The cow stepped on the tip after the squeeze or crush was moved and drove the tip into her her hoof. A rolling magnet would be a good thing to have around when your trimming.

When my dad is done welding his tractor repairs, he goes over the driveway with a little magnet "sweeper", a magnetic roll that picks up metal bits as you scoot it along. I think all farmers should have such a tool; cows (and other livestock) can step on a sturdy wire, or even eat it.

I’m thinking a pump-up tank sprayer and 18-20 VDC WET/DRY vac, and make sure to bring the crevice tool. So you can see better, and that gives you two different ways to dislodge foreign matter or foreign object from way down in tight recess. Maybe add some antiseptic soap to your tank sprayer solution.

You are thinking of trench foot in humans. Where the skin sloughs away after being wet for a long period of time. Watch Forrest Gump where Lt. If you can imagine walking barefoot through a field then stepping in that hot mess, how fast you'd get a lesion or abscess on your foot.
