Found Bike gets repaired, ridden, and cashed in

Спорт

I found a bike in the woods a couple of weeks ago, and it seems to have been there for quite some time. This is a section of Pisgah National Forest where you are very unlikely to find litter-this is not some city park. If this bike was left in an emergency, the owner certainly didn’t make it look so, and nobody has come back to get it.
I considered the circumstances briefly; maybe someone was hurt and left the bike? Maybe there was a crash and someone was rescued? None of these scenarios explain how the bike was thrown so far off trail with no destruction path. This was clearly a rage quit.
So today we’re going to clean the forest, have some fun, and hopefully get paid for it.

I had an all steel version of that bike when I was a teenager, and I rode the hell out of it for years until I got too tall for it. Learned how to maintain it and adjust the derailleurs, and I absolutely loved it. You're absolutely right, this is a case of neglect, pure and simple.

I have also a steel version of that too that was originally owned by my dad. Me and my younger brother broke it and it's frame is sitting in the storage for around 20 years. We revived it with new parts, welded disk brake caliper mounts and coverted it from thread type hub into a cassette type and now it was an awesome commuter bike where our streets are quite a bit rough and unpaved.

I have tried to sell bikes like this, and I can get them for free all the time, most needing work of some sort, which often far exceeds resale value if it does need parts, even just a set of tires / tubes. I sell bikes like this for $2 "complete" when I pickup scrap metal / bikes, and they get shipped to another country where bikes are harder to come by and they don't mind doing a little work on them. This at least saves them from the scrapyard, but otherwise not much interest, especially if they even remotely need some work, and most need something; if those people don't buy them from me, they go to the scrapyard (although I do not bother breaking them down, not worth all the time). I get what you're saying, and has potential to be basic transportation, even if the wheel is bent back straight / somewhat rideable, but still many people are not going to pay $10-$20 for a Walgoose or similar, or spend any money to fix them up. I've sold low end Trek's, Diamondback's & Schwinns for $10-$20, but not any Walgoose or similar super cheap bikes.

The helmet cracked in half, I had a bit of a sore back and I reckon I wouldn't be alive today if I wasn't still wearing my bike helmet. Still it looks weird to have it on when you're not on your bike 🤣

Plus recycled steel usually cost less than "new" one (rust faster from what I understand) If the frame isn't make of regular round tube but some other shape, it's even more expensive to make. I used to ride when I was younger in like 2nd - 6th grade (I’m 16 now), I was pretty good, my dad helped my build my own jumps, they were only like 3 feet high but that was pretty big for my age. We had a 2 Foot table top jump and one day when I was messing around, I hit my back wheel on the tabletop and went OTB flat faced onto concrete, wasn’t tolled I had a concussion but looking back now I probably did, the crash was so bad, the entire right side of my body has tiny scars and I couldn’t write in school for a month. This crash scared the shit out of me so I haven’t rode since. I recently turned 16 though and I now have a car so If i wanted to go riding i could, instead of awkwardly getting dropped off in my parents car. I’m thinking about riding again, I live about 1 hour from mega cavern now and your videos have really sparked my interest in mountain biking again ( more like dirt jumping but same difference), so thanks for giving me the courage to get back on my mountain bike again can’t wait for my first ride back.

Even with a low payout, I'm happy to see the bike get melted down for use again. I volunteer at a bike charity and we get a lot of bikes like that in, stuff that's not rideable and people get warm fuzzies by donating it to homeless people rather than throw the bike away. Unfortunately, a Walmart bike that's been left outside isn't really salvageable and it just clutters our warehouse. Weathered (zing) walmart bikes aren't really ride-able, and become an eyesore quickly. I think a lot of areas could really benefit from a rusted bike cleanup effort.

Hey Seth, thanks for picking the bike from the forest. I don't understand why some people gave 👎 to this video. I think you did something good for the Environment and I know Mother Nature also appreciate it. Keep the good work! 🤘😎

That bike can be easily sold here where I live, for around $70. Easily.

Seriously. I don't know what Seth was thinking. I'm a broke college student and I ride a bike worth $10. I would kill for that bike.

Seth knows its not so safe to ride that bike with those wheels. so i think this is why he didnt sell it as it is. For somebody with little bicycle knowledge it could be dangerous

Yeah, but that wheels are dirt cheap, buy used ones, or you maybe have spares. He already invested time, part and money in fixing it to rideable condition, why not finish it and give it to some neighbor kid who would love to ride it. No one normal would drive that on that dirt tracks, but some kid on suburban street would sure want to. I know this is made for fun but it didn't have to end this way 😀🚴

I've been watching through Berm Peak vids for the past couple months and this is the first bike I've seen just scrapped. Funny thing is this is probably the closest looking bike to my 2007 Mongoose Elite Pro I picked up at Dick's sporting goods way back before I knew any better about the quality you get from big box stores. At least mine came with disc brakes. Lol
