She told the officer it was the fourth floor multiple times, you can see in the bodycam footage that he exited on the third floor and stayed on it. She even told him before he entered the elevator because he asked and she said yes it's the fourth floor.

The problem is when answering the door with law enforcement on the other side, any move you make can be deemed as a threat, and when Fortson's left arm came up, the officer made the fatal mistake. He won't be charged.

Our safety doesn't matter but the cops safety matters.

Unfortunately, the deputy was legitimately responding to a domestic violence call and was duty-bound to investigate the situation. In the course of this investigation he was presented with the subject of the investigation who was holding a weapon. If the Airman hadn’t been standing in front of him with a gun the there’s a nearly 100% chance that this would have been a non-event. The Airman made a really poor choice and here we are.

You should look into a case from San Jose, Ca around 2007. A Cop walked into a wrong home, discovering a Vietnamese woman prepping food in her kitchen. She challenged his presence in her home, again, while at the counter cutting vegetables with a plastic knife. Officer Blue unloaded on her fearing for his life and San Jose PD basically told the husband you need to drop your lawsuit against us before well pay. As soon as they settled the husband and two grade school daughters left the Bay. I was doing home healthcare at the time servicing the asian community and would get to hear all of the community chatter.

That's exactly what this expert is doing, he's exonerating the cop through his interview!

The deputy knocked and then stepped away from the peep hole several times. He's the reason the airman went to get his gun. Roobers and killers have been known to say they are the police to get victims to open the door. That itchy trigger finger cop didn't even give a command to drop the weapon. And then after the airman feel and dropped the weapon the cop starts yell as if he still had the gun. I'm glad the young man was able to say on cam that he didn't have the weapon which was obvious on the video.

What really makes me mad, are people in comment sections made ridiculous statements. They were responding to a domestic violence call.. in a domestic violence call they don't announce their presence, or stand in front of the peephole because they don't want the alleged offender to do something drastic to the alleged victim. Do you understand? Not only were they following their training, they were there TO HELP. They made a mistake. Have you ever made a mistake? It happens. The officer that is crying on body camera is showing remorse. You know, a feeling somebody gets when they identify they've made a horrible mistake?

If you go back and listen to the original video you can here the airman yell who is it the police didn’t say anything

The subject matter is not that the Airman came to the door with his gun, it is why did the officer shoot a man posing know threat to him. Former Police Captain stop trying to create a narrative to justify the shooting, you said it appears that the Airman’s gun was pointed down when you know good damn well the Airman’s gun was pointing down in his right hand and his left hand was up with palms open. The Airman showed more Transparency than the police officer and yet he is the one who gets killed. This officer needs to admit he was wrong by excepting very little information, because the woman said I believe the noise was coming from the top floor

There was literally no officer safety issue except the one he created by the scary, unqualified officer. He saw a black man holding a weapon in a non-threatening manner and killed him. 2A does not apply to any black person when you police with racism and biases. There was no disturbance in the victim's apartment; that's the first clue. The deputy hid his presence and voice initially. He then gave commands, from cover, after he shot the victim 6 tines. This captain is a clown and likely helped other officers commit the same reprehensible acts of violence. He wouldn't give this same critic if it was him or someone he actually cared about.

28+years n law enforcement myself and I have concluded that based off of my personal experiences that we must always assume any statements made from law enforcement to be a lie designed to confuse the truth until proven otherwise via credible evidence.....period. Remember, with law enforcement, it's us (police) against them (citizens/you). No thought necessary when it comes to pulling the trigger once the officer saw the color of his skin (Black) and the gun (pointed in a safe direction DOES NOT MATTER IF MINORITY) it was in his mind a good shoot. If Roger Fortson was white, trust me when I say that caution and care would have been the order of the day. In the end, by changing nothing, nothing changes. The capt is an idiots/plant on here making excuses for the police officer are a disgrace to policing. They have no clue to current policies and procedures, and both are from the past. Remember, even though you spent 30 yrs in law enforcement you only have 2 yrs experience responding to situations similar to this. Remember folks, a capt. is a pen pusher and nowhere near the front lines/street only showing up after the fact to judge actions he can't do. Second Truth: So the point to yell drop your gun after you shoot is a police tactic used to confuse the truth. In a shooting, there will probably be witnesses and police are trained to yell verbal commands after a shooting because law enforcement knows that witnesses are notoriously bad and just plain not reliable at best. Law enforcement takes advantage of this known truth to bolster their false narrative. Law enforcement knows that half of the witnesses will say "I heard the officer say drop the gun before, and half will say I heard the officer say it afterward". A 50/50 chance is a win in the eyes of law enforcement and the courts. Remember, law enforcement contends that citizens are stupid especially Black People, rich or poor.

You are exactly right. You are not required by law to open the door for the police if they do not present a warrant. You can communicate through the door. NEVER open the door for police. Never leave your door unlocked. I live in Dallas and in 2018 a black man was sitting in his apartment eating ice cream and an officer mistakenly went to the wrong apartment and shot the man dead thinking it was her apartment. She’s in prison. Rightfully so.

The officer left the leasing office while a phone call was being made and trusted a random woman in the parking lot who did not even know what floor the apartment was on. She told him it was on the 4th floor. The officer went to the 3rd floor. How did the officer know it was on the 3rd floor?? It was a set up!!

The man's hand is up in a non confrontational manner like just saying that's murder

That hairless gentleman didn’t explain the first knock. He also leaned against the door and knocked, and said nothing. He moved out of sight for 33 seconds before knocking again and he then announced himself twice. But by that time it was too late because of the hide and seek games , the Airman went and retrieved his weapon.

He didn’t know! Because obviously when he looked out the peep hole, the murderer was standing out of view! That’s when Mr Fortson went to retrieve his weapon! Also keep in mind that he had already been a victim of a burglary! This so-called cop decided to simply fire first and fire multiple shots which means that he had no regard for Mr Fortson’s life anyway, especially when saw that he was black!!! He took the time to say “step back “! And then 6 rounds! When he could’ve said drop the gun!!! And should have noticed that Mr Fortsons gun was barrel down and finger off the trigger! I have some questions for commenting cop. I realize they'll never be answered because it would contradict his preconceived narrative. What kind of neighborhood is this apartment in, is it the type of neighborhood where you would answer a door with a gun in your hand. It was a nosy Karen that went around listening to her neighbors doors. She couldn't figure out which apartment the commotion was coming from. She led the police to the wrong apartment. Obviously is wasn't a good neighborhood or this young man was being harassed by his Ken and Karen neighbors.

Frankly, I don't believe that the airman knew that it was a cop behind the door, because he could not see him through the peep hole, as the officer stayed off to the side of it. This is all based upon how the airman appeared to react when he saw the officer. It was surprise and made a gesture for the officer to wait or stop or don't shoot, I'm not a threat. He never raised his gun at all and the look on his face was that of shock and surprise, not a look that says I'm going to shoot you.

Initially, when the officer first knocked, he didn't announce himself; he simply knocked and moved out of view of the peephole. Roger likely went to retrieve his nearby gun upon hearing the knock and asking, "Who is it?" However, the officer remained silent and moved aside. Roger probably informed his girlfriend that someone was at the door. This behavior resembled the tactics of home invaders who knock and then hide from the peephole, ready to rush in if the door is opened. During the second knock, the officer identified himself, prompting Roger to cautiously open the door with his gun in hand. Roger likely didn't understand why a police officer was at his door since he was merely conversing with his girlfriend. This explains his relaxed demeanor despite holding a firearm when he opened the door. Regarding the officer, this is a case of murder due to failure to follow protocol. The officer should take responsibility for his actions and show honor. This case is straightforward given these circumstances. This incident underscores the importance of privacy and minding one's own business.

THE POLICE OFFICER SHOWED UP FOR ACTION! He didn't investigate if the information he received. was accurate. Or if the information was actually a crime. Once the officer arrived at the AIRMAN door he did NOT hear anything that would of COLLABORATED "KAREN" story! Actually the COP heard NOHING coming from the AIRMAN apartment, SO there for, his INVESTIGATION was over then, BECAUSE he didn't have the PROBABLE CAUSE to knock on the AIRMAN door! WHEN that officer went to the AIRMAN door he did NOT HEAR ANYTHING REMOTLY LIKE THE TWO 'KAREN'S" say was going on at his Apartment! SO he should of NEVER KNOCK ON HIS DOOR!

Amd when an offender pulls a gun on a cop like that, no additional "investigation" is required before the cop legally defends himself.

Because he didn't hear the word police are he didn't see him through the peep hole. He never commanded that airman to drop his weapon until after he shot him. And they will do anything to protect one of their. This makes that a corrupt system. They shouldn't be protecting that officer.

Police are trained to not stand in front of the door when going to a residence to prevent ambushes, and gives police an advantage if a threat were to appear at the door.

Exactly. To me the victim tried to explain himself in his own home. He raised his left hand and that's an indication of he tried to ask question or explain himself to the policeman. He had a gun in his right hand but the gun was lowered and pointed to the ground.

This is a pure damn shame this whole situation..

So when the officer was moving side to side on each side of the door. That officer was ready to use his weapon. Boy I tell you as a retired Recovery Agent and to have lived there....and to have the capture rate that I do. I have witnessed and heard things living up there. And you all O.C.S.O. Still making me look good. A Fire Baker chief kills his business partner. A Officer looses his life on duty. Paramedics get arrested and charged with taking pictures of past out patients in the meat wagon. Asking me if I was putting cars into some lake knowing I was at home. What else? Another officer open fire with egg corns falling on the roof of his squad car. When there was a hand cuffed person inside and now this. Okaloosa County, you are a 3 mile wide town that thinks you are as big as Miami-Dade county. And you incarcerate almost about your 20% of your population and I been watching for years.....over 15 years I have read what was happening around me. Thank God I don't live there anymore. I believe the young man was on the phone when the cop knocked. He may have heard the banging and loud talking of the cop, but it may have sounded like background noise to him. Either way, the cop opened fire because he saw a gun in the young man's hand, NOT because he was threatened. Cops always panic when a black man is in possession of a firearm; even if legally possessed.

you can tell by the airmen reaction when he opened the door, he didn't expect to see a gun pointed at him , the officer just reacted too quiclkly when he saw the gun, the gun was obviously pointed down in a non threatening manner and the airmans other hand was up as if to say dont shoot im no threat.

You forget the first time he knocked. He did not announce his self number two when he knocked. He stood back away from the door, so how did he know who he was? He peeped out the people and didn’t see nobody.

No visual observation of who was actually at the door was provided by the deputy to the occupant. These experts fail in recognizing that if someone yelled, "Johnnie Walker." is not a reason to unarmed yourself.

The officer asked the manager which apt? she said.. Im not sure. He asked other questions and then asked again.. which apt? She then told him the Airmans apt number. The management should be sued for negligence. Giving wrong info costed that mans life.

To me, it looked like the apartment number said 1407, not 1401. To me, the shooting was murder. Just plain murder!!!!

The weapon was at his side; pointed downward... No reasonable person would have acted so irrationally. Either band guns or hire more compitant personnell. The manager indicated questionable information' third party source info; unsure which apt...

That deputy is going to say he saw a gun and feared for his life, but you know what, that's all he saw was a gun, and if he saw the gun he saw it wasn't pointing at him, he saw it was at his side, and if he saw all that he saw and knew that airman wasn't a threat, with all that he saw-a gun- a gun pointing down and not at him, his decision was to shoot that airman six times and then tell him to drop his gun.

You don't have to obstruct the view of the peep hole, all you have to do is step out of the line of sight. The officer clearly steps to the side of the peep hole. This tactic has been used many times to carry out home invasions , in fact I would be surprised if the officer didn't know that. If you get a knock at your door and can't see who it is , you grab your gun...The deputy should have stood in front of the door so he could be seen.

Standing in front of a door when announcing you are police could get an officer killed and is not protocol.

The office/leasing manager should be charged. She stated at least three times she didn’t know the exact apartment the disturbance was coming from and when she was asked a fourth time by the officer she gave a specific apartment number. This is crazy. She is the root cause of the issue.

The NRA raises money by demonizing supposedly liberal DAs in red states. They're not raising money by advocating for this young man or Robert Dotson either.

The officer should have yelled "put the gun down" and waited for the young man's reaction. He was clearly not a threat with his firearm pointed towards the ground. If the call had been of a different nature, like a criminal offense involving a firearm it would be alot different because the officer would have had proof that a crime had taken place and the suspect was armed. He had no reason to be on that high of an alert with just a simple disturbance call. I know police officers have to make split second decisions that sometimes training can't even prepare you for but you have to be built for it or someone could loose their life and unfortunately this young man lost his. I don't think he heard the police officer announce himself. I think he only heard the beating on the door which is why he opened the door armed. If you're in a back bedroom with a t.v or radio on medium volume you could probably hear banging on the door, someone saying pizza man or police, maybe, maybe not. It all depends on what he was doing before he came to the door. There would have been no reason for him to come to the door armed if he had known it was an officer. So unfortunate...God bless his family...
