Former Phoenix school part of Indian boarding schools investigation

The Federal Government on Wednesday acknowledged for the first time the "heartbreaking and undeniable" history of Indian boarding schools across the U.S. that forced assimilation on Indigenous people. Arizona was home to 47 of these schools, the second most of any state in the U.S.

The atrocities are being watered down in the news. These survivors were released at 16--18 Years old. Parents, brothers, sister no longer knew each other. The intergenerational damage is still going on the worst way.

    (a) There are still shiny plaques with Az and city officials names (names you would know) at Phx Indian School with writing on these plaques praising Phx Indian School. -Leonard Clark

    (g) The Phx mayor and council have a chance to stop the cover up of ethnic cleansing that took place at Phx Indian School by immediately taking down these plaques and RE-writing them to tell the truth!

I remember when I married my husband in the 60's when it became legal for us to marry. We went up to his reservation for a year. I was shock to see children in first grade going away to school all the way through high school. They all be waiting for Trailways or Greyhound with their footlocker. Some would be going to Phoenix Indian School other to Sherman in Riverside, California others to Utah. One reservation with children going all over. Mostly not to be seen until the beginning of summer when they be back with their footlocker. Imagine your child that young being gone a whole school year and if you could afford it maybe see him for Christmas. Let me tell you something else they don't talk about. How native children when the parents died, family was not qualified to take them in by adoption standards. They would take them for adoption with non native people across the country and seldom was told where they were. My husband's cousins took them many years to get information. They were adopt to families in Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Pennsylvania. Yet they were from Arizona.

    (h) Keeping these plaques up at Phx Indian School that essentially praise ethic cleansing and genocide is essentially no different than when the Confederate Monument was allowed to stand at the Az state Capitol until it was rightfully taken down by Az officials!

One of the worst facts is that these schools and the enforcement of forcibly removing Native children from their families was something that happened a long time ago but was still happening until sometime in the 1980's. I'm 44 years old and one of my girl friends was only a few years older than me was subjected to these boarding schools right here in California. Which meant she was taken from her family in mid 1970's. She described a tiny bit of what she suffered and one thing was how hungry they always were and they some how found time to hunt and cook the squirrels they caught. She understandably didn't want to talk about much else but you could see the pain behind her eyes 💔! What the settlers did to the Native People's since 1492 was despicable, but what the US did to the Native People's from eastern USA to the west coast was so heinous, vile, disgusting and very disturbing. The he worst was what the settlers did since the beginning of the forced moving of tribes from their ancestral lands and everything that went along with it. These things were so terrible that one of the worst people of the modern age in the 20th century saw the pictures and heard the stories on how to wipe an entire race of people off from the face of the earth 🌏🌍🌎 was in awe of what they did to the Native People's that he used the exact same tactics to try to wipe off the earth the whole race of the Jewish people. If you look at side by side photos or look at what Hitler did to the Jews you'd see how eerily similar it all is to each other that there can't be any mistake that the two are not linked in similarity and the second copying the first.

My father 65 years old today, along with his brothers and sisters were separated from each other and attended boarding school. Last names were changed and now there are 4 different versions of the last name on my father’s side. Fortunately they were able to come back to the Navajo lands, reunited together. As for my mother’s side, I have only stories from my grandparents about their missing brothers and sisters, missing children and parents… it’s very heart breaking.

@Paul Smith every country’s history has something devastating it grew from. i think it’s a great thing to educate others and to seek knowledge for ourselves of these sorts of events, not in just in our own country but others. Thank you for your words.

It was still going on in the 90’s here in Arizona. I remember when this school closed as a school. And for the longest time you could walk through the property and feel the pain and fear that is still imprinted on the surrounding land.
