She led an uprising in the Philippines in the mid-1980's that toppled the repressive regime of President Ferdinand Marcos...and later fought off seven coup attempts in six years.
Corazon Aquino has died at the age of 76.
Aquino was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer more than a year ago and had been confined to this hospital in Manila for more than a month.

The current president of the Phillipines, who is on an official visit to the United States, remembered Aquino's strength and commitment.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton praised Aquino -- saying she "helped bring democracy back" to her country after years of authoritarian rule.

Aquino's rise began in 1983 --when her husband -- an opponent to Ferdinand Marcos -- was murdered as he returned to the country from exile in the United States.
She became her husband's political stand-in and ran against Marcos -- becoming the country's first female leader in 1986 when Marcos stepped down amid U.S. pressure -- and following elections many said were fraudulent.
After she became president many criticized her leadership as indecisive --and she survived numerous coup attempts.
But she remained a beloved figure in the Phillipines where she was affectionately referred to as "Tita" or "Auntie" Cory.

She was, in the snap elections of 1986 where in the fraudulent count by the COMELEC, where Marcos supposedly won, but actually Aquino won in the counts by the NAMFREL (National Citizen's Movement for Free Elections)

@@simoun4065 EDSA revolution wasn't a failure, Filipinos failed EDSA. Pinalitan nyo lang si FEM ng ibang corrupt politicians, sino ba ang nag elect? Diba kayo-kayo din? Di kasalanan ng EDSA People Power kung bakit hanggang ngayon may corrupt pa din, sino ba naman kasing "BOBO" ang mag eelect ng mga senador na kagaya ni BBM na anak ng diktador, yung mga Ejercito-Estrada, si Enrile, see? Wag isisi sa EDSA ang pagkakamali ng mga botante ngayon.

I pray Filipinos vote for a non-marcos duterte rule. No to the drug war and marcos. Get the elections delayed for another year. The world is still in a pandemic and Philippines has been closed to foreigners even with Filipino blood.

My late uncle Monsignor Domingo Tanalgo worked to end the deadly Marcos regime. He was a priest who I am sure heard many confessions of the crimes of Marcos and his wife Imelda and his administration. Our elders kept us away from that history, but it is back with a vengeance. Unfortunately I cannot vote as I am an American though not a proud one. God help us all, this time the rest of the world will feel Marcos and duterte crimes. We have the Internet and we are in the nuclear age.
