I'm formatting each page in photoshop and am then exporting them as a pdf in the way you described in another video. When I upload the interior should I have a file with all pages in it? If so, how do I take my single pdf pages and make that happen? Thanks!

Hello First time creating a book, Lulu is complaining about pictures are too big and too small when I upload my PDF. I checked the Resolution of all the pictures are they are within range (200-600). I don' t know what else to check. Can you help. Thanks

Thank you for this video. I wrote and printed my grandma's memoirs many years ago and it has stone-age formatting. It has two columns with the first page on one side and the last page on the other and so on until you get to the middle of the book. Hope that makes sense. Is there a simple way to get rid of all the old formatting so I can start fresh and format as described in your video. It is currently in WORD, and I do not have the original text only document.

Hello, I wrote a family history book about my ancestors, which you printed for me in 2022 and 2023 and I distributed to family members in the United States. Now I'm writing a similar book about my wife's family history. When completed, copies of this book will be given to members of her family in the UK, New Zealand and the United States. Do you have arrangements with printers in these countries so that I could print some of the books in the United States and others in the UK and maybe New Zealand? I know I will have to format the US and international editions differently (US letterb and A4).

Hello! I have a question. The manual on LuLu says the following: "The total number of pages (front matter, body, and back matter) in your book must be divisible by 4. If not, the printer will insert additional pages." Is front and back matter the front and the back covers of the book, while the body is the word document? So the covers are in a jpeg format, while the body is in Word or Pdf? So divisible by 4 refers to all covers and the body? What is a page? Is that the front and the back side of one sheet of paper? Or do you refer to pages as sides actually, so each sheet has 2 sides (pages)? For the covers, does the top and the inner side count as 1 page or 2 pages? "The final page (front and back) of your book must be left blank. If there is any print on the final page, it will be rejected for distribution." If I do a page break in Word, but save and upload the file as a PDF, will the break be recognized by the printer? Shall I put 2 blank pages if I am converting to pdf? Finally, how does the side view work in terms of covers? The books often have a front and back flat surfaces with descriptions. However, there is a side, a connection part. If it is thick enough, there is usually the author's name, book title and publisher's logo. Is there a way to do that with lulu? How does the side image get edited? Since I am working with a landscape orientation that is going to be stapled, I probably do not have to do a side cover. Is there an option for authors who choose different page orientations? Thank you!

Hi! The total number of pages refers to all interior pages. It does not include the front or back cover. If the total number is not divisible by 4, the printer will add blank pages at the end of the interior of the book. Hey Lulu. I'm having trouble with getting my text to auto flow onto a new page. I usually design books with facing pages so the auto flow is easy to set up in the master spread, but I decided to use your INDD template to create a US Trade book, and it's set up for a single page instead of facing pages, and your site says not to use facing pages/spreads, so I have no idea how to set up auto flow to create new pages ad infinitum in a single page setup. I tried emailing your customer service after searching through your various guides and knowledge base, and they unhelpfully looped me back to those same guides. Could you direct me to an actual answer? Thank you.

Do you insert blank pages at the beginning or do I have to do that? You said the chapter should start on the even pages but in my display it makes sense as the odd pages. Title page (1) blank-back side of the title page (2) First Chapter (3) back of first page would be (4)???

I did go in to all that and set my book for 6 x 9 and when I went to print it up, it would only give me 8 x 11. So I did a copy that size hoping to go back in and redo it. I have done books in the past that haven't had to have any fonts embedded. They still come out the way I want them to. I don't want to go elsewhere to do my books. I like LULU if only the process of printing would be a little easier.

I’m writing a paperback book. My paper size is 6x9 portrait. The top is .7” left is .4” gutter is 1” bottom is .6” right is .7” and the gutter position is on the left. I looked at other paperback books as a reference to get to these numbers. Should anything about this be changed? For the “multiple page” setup, do I set it to normal, mirror margins, 2 pages per sheet, or book fold? So far the book is 106 pages but I plan for it to be 250-300 These tutorial videos are very helpful! ^^

We recommend looking through our products page, found here, www.lulu.com/products. Once you decide on a size, download the Design Guide Bundle of the correct sizing. Open the folder labeled “Lulu-Book-Template-US-Trade” and then open the PDF specifications file. There you will see a PDF of all the correct sizing you need, including the total document size. This is the dimensions your book needs. Additionally, please do not set up your file with "multiple page" set up. We hope this information is helpful. Have a good day.

Definitely want to do that in Word before uploading. Normally books will have 'Justified' text, which means the character and word spacing is adjusted to make each line fill the page equally. But you can control the alignment as you see fit. I am just getting started on getting my book printed. I am doing it for my elderly father. It is a book on his career as a baseball coach. I created it in Powerpoint and migrated to a PDF. I imported it into an eBook (iBook) but want to make a hard copy for him. Some of his former players may want to get a hard copy, but I am not concerned with that. But there may be a request for 5-10 copies. Lulu was recommended to me. I have look at some of the videos and admit to being a bit overwhelmed. Is there an easy way to get this done?

Hi Nikole! It depends on how you have your PDF formatted. If your document has text on each page, it will be printed front and back, but if you have blank pages in-between, the those will be included in the end product as well.

Yes - you'll want to download the template then do an "Open With..." to select LibreOffice. Word and LibreOffice are not 100% alike though, so you will likely need to adjust the page settings to make sure your gutters are properly set. LibreOffice has a great wiki with FAQ/guides too: wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/Writer

Hi Susan! Thank you for tuning in! The only trick is if each break goes before or after a heading style. If that’s the case, you can add the break to the heading style. But it is much better to done them manually so you ensure everything turns out perfectly. We do not require page breaks, but it is definitely a best practice. I followed the US trade interior template but it still doesn’t look correct? I set the margin to .625 on each side but the text still looks too close to the edge? Use the size they list, or add +0.5" on height/width if full bleed. When creating a PDF, go lossless 300DPI. (If needed.) Sometimes it will weirdly make it 299DPI which cause lulu will throw a warning. You can double check the proof to make sure it's OK.

Is there an instruction about how to insert photographs into manuscript- I am writing memoirs with photos in each chapter.

I am still lost with this portrait vs landscape thing. The work I did was in landscape (11 x 8.5). There's no changing that without rewriting the entire thing. I want it printed along one of the short ends... you know, in landscape. Now the videos are saying to make it portrait? How is this done without cutting off or shrinking? Is it something I do to the pdf after I saved it?

Hello! You need to size your PDF pages to match the book you’re creating. Additionally, please include the bleed dimensions of 0.125 in for your document. For example - a 6 x 9 in book requires a PDF with pages sized 6.25 x 9.25 in. We hope this information is helpful.

it stuck with these 2 warnings : The uploaded file has an unsupported trim size. Images: Your file contains images with a resolution of less than 200 pixels per inch. Lulu suggests using images with a pixel per inch range of 200-600 for the best results. Transparency: We detected an element that may be transparent within your file. We strongly recommend flattening or removing any transparencies in your file. I tried to optimize my pdf adobe pro dc but LULU still does not accept it??

How do I add a table of contents page for my printed book (not EBook)? The link in the comments doesn't work.

Hi @Hotstuffrush! To add a table of contents to your print book, you will need to add that manually to the source file PDF you upload to publish the book.
