    In one of my private groups, we are all dwarves, of course, inspired by Tolkien's Hobbit. But there are only 3 of us, nevertheless, we are having so much fun playing through the Lost Mines of Phandelver. An adventure none of us finished when we started to play and it's a good one. Great video, I learned a lot, why aren't I subscribed??

    When reading R.A. Salvatore’s novels set in F.R., I found those parts of the story focused on the Dwarves were the most enjoyable and wholesome. Like… humans so often wound up being greedy parasites and created societies that I wouldn’t want to live in myself. But hearing of the general goings on of Clan Battlehammer, of Pikel + Ivan Bouldershoulder, of Thibbledorf Pwent, and even of Athrogate (with his silly rhymes) together with Amber Gristle O Maul…. I felt like I could lived among them no problems. Or since I’m kind of tall… maybe I’d live with the halflings in the Bleeding Vines town that’s been set up above Gauntlgrym just for some extra space. And just visit the mining city during day trips (or every year or so when defending it from the next inevitable attack).

  • @qzbnyv

    Seems that digging too deep is a constant problem dwarves have faced. Examples: - The poor Duegar (Grey Dwarfs) digging too deep and getting enslaved by mind flayers 😓 - The Delzoun dwarves digging at Gauntlgrym reaching the fire primordial (!!!) Maegera (…though that worked out okay once they harnessed it with help of the other races) - The Battlehammer clan of Delzoun dwarves digging too deep at Mithral Hall and provoking Shimmergloom (a Shadow Dragon) into attacking them

    One of the many weird bits about 5e Tomb of Annihilation is how the Albino Dwarves of Chult are clearly *not* the same as the Wild Dwarves from previous editions and, in fact--aside from their appearance--are pretty similar, culturally, to most other dwarves. Just another thing in this module included without much thought given to any considerations beyond surface-level fan-service.

    Interesting that you mention a transmuter dwarf character - that was an idea I had with the concept being that he wants to learn to change the substance of materials to make mining easier so that more time can be put into the finest possible craftsmanship. Instead I opted for a shadowfell sorcerer dwarf - touched by shadowfell forces during a mine collapse and struggling to come to term with growing arcane powers

    Thanks for this it's really insightful and had given me a great launchpad to keep researching! I wish there were more hill/gold Dwarf settlements! It seems totally counter intuitive that they'd have smaller settlements other than the ravaged landscape. Purely due to the lack of isolation I'd imagine their population would be massive compared to mountain/shield.

    Hey I know this is a year old but whatever lol. In response to your comment I believe ancient clans like the Delzoun came about later in history after the split in the dwarven race resulted in Gold/Shield...etc. Around -4000 to -3000 DR. So this vid is more about the races of dwarves than their eventual clan identities . Delzoun were shield dwarves.

    You talking about how dwarfs are not fans of magic reminds me of how off a new gamer at adventure league made his character. It is a hill dwarf fighter / rogue arcane trickster. When I started chuckling he asked why. I told him it is braking most every dwarf custome. Honor is there thing and one thing they truly dislike is arcane magic.

    So, this might be a silly question, but where do Mountain and Hill dwarves fit in? Are they just different names for Shield and Gold Dwarves? If not, why aren't shield and gold in the 5e PHB?

  • @Jorphdan

    @Jorphdan

    5 жыл бұрын

    They are different names, Shield and Gold dwarves are the Forgotten Realms specific names. Shield and Gold Dwarves are not in the PHB because it's supposed to be system neutral so you could play in Eberron or Dragonlance, or what have you. If you're playing a Shield Dwarf in the Forgotten Realms use the Mountain Dwarf sub race from the 5e PHB. Gold Dwarves use the Hill Dwarf subrace. good question :D

    I love Dwarves. They are such an underdog. People either play elves or if they want short people then they play gnomes. Tolkien based them off the culture I grew up in too so I sort of identify with that too. Such an under rated race if you ask me and the race that just get pooped on. Like the Drow and that junk. No wonder Dwarves distrust Elves. High Elves are the cause of like all of Faerun's problems, worse than Fairies in that way, and the Drow might be their victims but they are no different with their daemons. Bawh!

In 4E they actually did away with the whole racial gods bullshit, and made it so Moradin was the universally accepted god of craft, but Dwarves worshiped him extra hard because he made them.

    When it comes down to dwarven steel, there is not comparisons, none I cal tell you, sure the elves have their enchanted forges and the fire giants have their great magmatic furnaces, but dwarven steel my friends forged by the hands of a master runesmiths on their elemental, primal forges and anvils, is nothing short of miracles made flesh, or in this case metal, Dwarves do not use magic, they have no use for it, but they can channel the raw primal power of the elements and arcane into the metals weaving them during the forging and hammering them in place on their anvils, all done by master runesmith, but the metal at its core is were things get interesting, while not all dwarven metal works have a natural magical infused alloyed, the metals used in their weapons and armor are the result of an amalgamation of volcanic mineral being fused together, this is the reason why dwarven-steel never seem to rust, nor lose its edge, but things get even better when actual enchanted alloyed is used along with their runes, I have seen runic axes cut down a giant, a shield taking a spell blast from soccer or armor that can withstand illusions and temptations of demons,

    You REALLY NEED TO READ THE REALMS AND STOP USING D&D BOOKS FOR REFERENCE! there is so much you don't know and not true. Bout every forgotten realms reference you make is close to trash. Keep it to D&D campaign books cause it's obvious you don't know the realms

    I'm sorry you feel you need to all caps at me. I'll keep making videos as the majority of people have found them entertaining and useful for their campaigns. Not everyone has the time to slough through hundreds of Forgotten Realms books and have details memorized on hand for future reference. This is why I've gone with the lore that is summarized and repeated in more accessible campaign setting books and modules. I hope your day gets better, as you seem to be having a bad one.
