Forging the Sun: D20 Dice from Bumblebee Jasper!

In this one I cut a 20 sided die from Bumblebee Jasper. I learn a few lesions on health and safety but we end up with a beautiful piece for a fan.

    Just spitballing, but if you cut it without respiratory protection I'd guess it's more likely you breathed in some sulfur which I think is probably more prevalent in there than arsenic and which can irritate the lungs. Always good to wear respro even if it's annoying.

    I wouldn't mess with it. Arsenic is a slow killer. Small amounts accumulate over time. I'd strongly recommend taking serious precautions if trying to cut a mineral that has hazardous properties. Cutting creates dust and dust ends up in peoples' bodies easier than you'd think. The only safe amount of heavy metal exposure is 0. After that, it's not easy to calculate risk vs reward.

  • @Scarodactyl

    @Scarodactyl

What kinds of safety precautions would you want before you could consider returning to dice with potentially dangerous minerals? Just curious about the... logistics? of lapidary. Not really saying it's a good idea.

    The only real problem would be the dust. As he's using a wet grinding method for most of the work, the dust is already going to be minimised, but ideally, you would need a good quality respirator while working with it, and maybe a good ventilation system if you do a lot of work with those stones. It's also potentially an idea to wear nitrile gloves while cleaning out the water/sludge mixture, but in reality, as long as he promptly washes his hands with soap and water, that should be enough. In reality, as long as he's not licking the stone or breathing in lots of dust, he'll be fine. If you plan to make more than one, then you definitely need to be looking at that respirator, though.

    I have worked with materials for a long time. While they won't cause bacterial infections, the damaged tissue from the presence of such toxins will make one more susceptible to respiratory infection. Wear the proper ventilator for high dust operations. Ps. Just saw your dustmask, i would definitely suggest a silicon respirator with pancake filters designed for dust and volatile organic compounds. If you are concerned with contamination then thats the best course of action. Hard to get a good fit with a beard though... you can get forced air supply or an extracting unit to step up your health and safety game. You buy the right equipment to make beutiful art, now buy the right equipment to protect yourself as well! Much appreciation to you and your channel, take care!
