I love the length on this. It's short enough that you can do more than just straight stabbing and actually swing it around in different directions, but still take advantage of using it two-handed.

Cool work. Seeing the exposed ceramic wool makes me nervous though, you really don't want to breath in loose particles of that. They make sealers that work very well, protecting you AND the wool, and even improve insulation. ITC 100 is the one I'm most familiar with.

Very nice job! Two teensy little suggestions: 1. The blade seems bent and this will affect it's strength since the impact force will be concentrated on one side of the spear resulting in added damage. 2. Use cloth or rope for the grip. It adds to the comfort of the wielder and there is less risk of cutting from the wire.

Wire wrapped grips are present on a number of historical artifacts from the Middle Ages through the renaissance. It’s uncommon to see it now but they work well and when you’re wearing gauntlets/gloves there is not really a risk of hand injury

Good job and good video. But one thing to point out. Do you realize how much energy you are losing by having your anvil lose on the ground like that. You are working a lot harder than you have to. Every time you swing the hammer and hit the steel and the anvil moves that is wasted energy that did not go into the hammer blow. I have my anvil secured to a log that probably weighs about 350-400 lbs. when I hit red hot steel on it there is zero movement and all the energy of the blow goes into the steel. Just a little advice, secure your anvil and you’ll find out you don’t have to work so hard and shaping whatever you’re forging.

Exactly! Anvils mounted on concrete or very dense logs with at least 6" long lag screws securing it down will produce the best results, and to add one step further you can bed the anvil down with Epoxy for absolutely zero vibrations, _all_ the power gets transferred to the workpiece. Makes a lot less noise too, since it stops the anvil from vibrating.

The band aid was a great idea. Simple yet effective!

It’s amazing what you can make out of metal, or anything really. It’s just a matter of setting your mind to it and dedicating yourself to put forth the time and effort to do it and hopefully make something in the process.

Remarkable resemblance to a Zulu assegai (or assagai), a spear for thrusting and throwing. You are so creative in crafting it from a chain link. Truly beautiful workmanship.

The assegai is the throwing spear or javelin. The shorter shafted thrusting spear was known as the iklwa. It was called that because that was the approximate sound it made when pulled out of an enemy.

​@@avaleloc1513 True, his results are an asymmetrical, out of balance spear head inadequately fastened to a too short shaft featuring a wire wrap that is going to if it is handled more than hanging it in a wall. If the object was a wall hanger, it's a sucess, I suppose, because that is all it's good for.

Where Heimdall at?

You could have made your work a lot easier when forging the spearhead by using a rounded or cross peen Hammer rather than a flat hammer. It concentrates the force across it and helps it to draw out. The spearhead is also very off balance from the point to where the shaft connects. It's visible while turning; and even visible in the end shot when it was complete and you twisted it in the air you could see the tip oscillating due to its imbalance.

I could tell throughout the video, this person is not very skilled with tools and I suspect the end product, albeit looking "cool" is sub-par at best. Several problems there. -Anvil is loose on the ground. - No attention was paid to thickness and weight of the blade. -The hammering looked primarily cosmetic rather than shaping the blade itself, most of the shaping came from grinding, eliminating any benefit forging might've given the strength of the blade. -Hammering was inconsistent and left deep gashes and high spots. -The quenching was done precisely up to where the most narrow part of the blade is, and since there was no tempering this is making the weakest part of the spear the most prone to stresses that'll make it snap. -No attention was paid to wood grain while making the shaft. -the shaft is generally too short for a spear (But okay, that's up to him, not a big deal.. there are short spears anyhow) -There's no shoulder on the wood to retain the twisted wire in position.(a few vigorous thrusts and it'll get loose and slide off) -The majority of the wooden hilt was lacquered, making it slippery.... worst thing you can do to a spear shaft. -the pommel is completely loose and held into position by a wood screw and some glue... (Bad, very bad) There's more but I think I've made my point. All in all, this is extremely poor craftsmanship. But if it was a first time attempt, I'd say "not too bad for a first try". But if this is someone claiming to know what they're doing, I'd say there's a hell of a lot of space for improvement.

@@marinodezelak1180 I wouldn't call this extremely poor craftsmanship. For sure he machined the spear rather than forged it, and made some design errors like the lacquered shaft, but the guy set out to make a functional spear, and it sure looks functional to me.

That is a beautiful spear. I'm very impressed with the attention to the haft and stock of the spear, too!

Have you ever considered using a rattan bo staff as a spear shaft? Those things are almost unbreakable and easy to work with simple hand tools. I once used a four foot rattan as a handle for an axe and it worked great for me until somebody stole it.

I will need to remember to bring one of these with me when I go out to hunt wild Coca Cola. Seriously, though, I loved watching this video. I'm not a blacksmith, but I have been thinking about getting into the craft with some simple knives and such next time I visit my friend's forge. pro tip, when fire hardening your wood, you want to try and compress it (i.e. running a smooth rock over it a SEVERAL times.) and then you want to grease the wood. Rendered animal fats tend to work best in my experience! THEN, with greased wood, you can fire harden it! Keep in mind, although this does increase durability/hardness, it reduces the overall strength of your wood and makes it more likely to fracture.

I love your anvil. It has a very nice ring, and I assume it’s very hard because I can see it’s been chipped. I also love the work you did. I was skeptical about how the fit and finish would look but you did an amazing job.

I think spears designed for throwing tend to be a little shorter. I'm guessing the added pommel is purely as a counterweight to balance it for throwing too.

​@@Interrobang212 yes, throwing spears are mostly shorter or thinner (if they're long), it's just my personal taste - I love melee spears or at least combined, that can be thrown and comfortably used in melee combat.

This is wonderful! my one complaint is the screw at the bottom. I can not say i would know a better solution as Im not skilled with wood or metal working. But as a Historian, i Love watching these things come to life, (historically accurate or not.) and the vibe i got was that this thing is simply awesome except for the screw which im heavily biased against as a viewer.
