    I love the way you experiment with adapting your designs of tools and equipment to modify your working environment. Seems a very sensible approach to make everything more efficient in your workshop. The traditional blacksmith anvil was probably terrific for the first few hundred years of evolution, and now there's the New Millennium GS Tongs Anvil.

    Dav, Doing my work in Taiwan has really led me to think out of the box. This isn't always good but sometimes it leads to unexpected improvements. I'm not sure most blacksmiths would find this style of anvil more useful than a traditional anvil but it suits me very well so far. Thanks. Glen

    Oh, it's our role to thank you, for the knowledge and fun you share with us. I wondered, why did you use a rectangular punch in the middle of the punched hole process ?

  • @gstongs

    @gstongs

    Gabriel, That's a good question. That slender slot style punch helps me to make the hole more quickly, especially when my round punch is a bit dull and needs to be dressed. I will modify that punch some and make it a small slitter and so try to open the hole but remove the least amount of material possible. Thanks. Glen

  • @gstongs

    I'm very pleased with this anvil. I did slightly radius the sharp edges and may do more but first want to use this anvil a while before deciding what might suit me best. • @gstongs

    @gstongs

    5 жыл бұрын

    Kido, The saw marks are not deep. They mark the work slightly and I may eventually grind them off. But they will also smooth out with frequent use. It's very unlikely this steel (4145) will chip. The more likely thing is it will dent if struck with a hard enough hammer. Thanks.

    Very nice. I just realized something, you start with cold rolled (1018) steel don't ya? Maybe that plays a small part in why your forgings are always so clean looking ;) Just curious, but do you plan on cleaning those saw marks off the top of the flat on your new anvil, or just leaving it as is? Thanks for sharing. It's been a while since I've left a comment but I just wanted to say that I still enjoy watching your vids and forging style. 👍

  • @gstongs

    @gstongs

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I use cold rolled 1018 for all my tongs and that definitely plays a part in contributing to their final look. I'm going to leave those marks for now. Eventually, I may grind them off but to be honest, they barely leave any marks and over time continued use of the anvil will wear them smooth. I'm glad you continue to watch... Thanks. Glen

  • @gstongs

    @gstongs

    5 жыл бұрын

    Noah, Yes, I use 1018 cold rolled for all my tongs now. Firstly, it's a more consistent material than hot rolled. Secondly, it's easier to forge than higher carbon steel. And lastly, it won't crack with frequent cooling (I often quench my tongs when the jaws get hot) like medium carbon or other alloy steel might. Thanks for watching.

  • @gstongs

    @gstongs

    Adem, This is a very good question. For a few reasons, I like my tongs to be short and I know this doesn't suit everyone, especially those who use larger gas forges. I never have a problem with my hands getting burned from the stock I'm working but it can sometimes be difficult to get smaller pieces in and out of the forge with such short tongs. So, I have a longer, pick-up style tong that I use to get things in and out to where I can easily grasp with my short, forging tongs. In general, I just find this short style easier to manipulate which improves my productivity. Thanks. Glen

    Me too - I haven't yet had a chance to really use this anvil for my hammers but think it will suit what I want pretty well. You will probably see me using this anvil for many projects. Thanks.
