Forging a NEW STYLE of Blacksmith's Cross!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I had an idea recently for a unique blacksmith's cross design - different than the traditional Frederick's cross made by most smiths. I really like the riveted construction along with the contrast of the steel, copper, and leather.

Micah, I'm seriously impressed with this: the video production AND the blacksmithing. The editing on this video is very professional and is on par with other successful KZreadrs. Also, that leather strap makes the cross look soooo much better! 👍

Thanks man! I really appreciate it. I definitely like the leather more than the copper wire loop I tried first.

Great! Well filmed video where we can see what you do at the anvil! A well done cross! A note I feel I should add about drawing out over the edge of the anvil. Your anvil looks like it will be perfectly fine to draw out over the edge, after a little smoothing of the corners - not much work needed. You are correct in that drawing out over the edge does create dents. Though the excecution is not done correctly if the smith only makes dents and is forced to smooth them up on the face. Then the technique is not performed as it should be. When drawing out on the edge, the edge creates the dents, but the hammer smooths out the dents, as you hammer on the edge. You can see it in Alec Steele's, Brian Brazeal's, Daniel Lea's, as well as in my videos. So do not only look in the videos what the edge creates in dents (volume displacement) but also what the hammer smooths up, as the bar is drawn out over the edge. There should be VERY little cleaning up after using the endge, if any at all. If excecuted correctly, there is a relatively smooth bar or taper, not a lumpy and dented bar that has to be hammered smooth on the face.
