    I remember watching a man at a local park blacksmith once, and he lit a cigarette by pulling out a piece of charcoal with his tongs and lifted it up to his lips to light it one handed, and I asked would it burn his face, and he said “I’m more concerned with the lung cancer than the burn”

    “Pioneer Axe” is the title of the documentary (here on KZread) about the blacksmith shop that had most of the power hammers, grinding tools powered by water. Visited the site, only the ruins remain next to the Messalonskee Stream, Oakland, Maine.

    I have been wanting a anvil for years, the opportunity never presented itself until yesterday. I did some cleaning to see what it was and that led me to this video. Mine is a Black Jack Solidwrought made in 1907 and weighs around 90+ lbs. This video was very helpful, thank you for sharing it.

    I bladesmith with annealed barstock. If I heat and hammer, heat and hammer repeatedly for the textured look, Do I need to Normalize after?

  • @aspenforgemicahdarwin3171
    @aspenforgemicahdarwin31712 жыл бұрын

    Howdy Roger. You didn't say whether your barstock was high carbon (as opposed to mild steel), but I'm assuming it is. Especially since you'd be heat treating the knife, you'd always want to anneal it before quenching and tempering. Not annealing the knife (textured-hammering or not) keeps the grain structure very large (bad) and increases the risk of cracking during heat treat or while in use. Hope that makes sense! Best of luck, and thanks for the support

    Interesting oil cap. What exactly is that? It looks as if its an old oiler from a small hit and miss engine perhaps (??) These would have originally used either a pipe plug or a spring loaded brass oil cap. These blowers have a semi sealed gearbox that holds about one pint of light machine oil. Once its in there, there would be no reason to add oil like you would other brands of blowers which were intended to allow oil to seep out around the shafts and bearings.

  • @aspenforgemicahdarwin3171
    @aspenforgemicahdarwin31712 жыл бұрын

    Howdy Scott! It’s an oil cup that I found inside a large box of tools I purchased a while back. My assumption is that it was from a hit ‘n miss. The seal on this blower was pretty deteriorated, so any more than a steady few drops will flow out pretty quickly. I appreciate the info!

  • @scottreynolds4827
    @scottreynolds48272 жыл бұрын

    @@aspenforgemicahdarwin3171 take the gear box off and reseal that thing. I use rope from the hardware store. That is what was originally used . I add a bit of sealant to the rope when I install it on the groove. What makes these blowers better than others is the sealed gear case and no ball bearings to rust and make a loud grinding sound. These will not drip oil like many others do. Unless of course you turn it on its side and allow the oul to run out around the fan shaft bore

    Oh yeah, great stuff man! Although I've gotta say, even though I still use BLO to finish things I forge, I've started using Fluid Film to cover my restored tools in. The initial smell isn't great, but it's incredible for rust prevention and really brings out the black in steel.
