Forging a Knife From Ball Bearings
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Forge welding 1/2" ball bearings into a knife. Fun. Unexpected results and a few "ball" yokes, of course.

Thanks for watching! The final picture looks like there's a line in the finish a half inch in front of bolster. It's from tape used to put the knife in a sharpener and wipes off. I first saw the tang -plug trick seen here performed by Liam Hoffman and Alec Steele.
It might not have made a nice pattern but the end result was still a good looking knife.
While this was probably the most uninteresting canister forge weld in terms of patterns, it's pretty damn impressive to get such a consistent forge weld from a bunch of balls!
Ya know...the fact that there wasn't a pattern is a good thing. That means you did an extremely good job at forge welding. It shows your skill.
I did this exact same build on my channel 6 months ago. You have to etch the blade much longer for 52100 and still its not dramatic. I used 1/4" ball bearings and they came out about an 1.5" on the knife in a kind of weird honeycomb pattern with slightly darker lines between them. I think I did over-forge it a bit because when I etched it out of the canister it looked amazing. Next time I'd do this with a narrower billet or smaller bearings.
The steel powder would have given you some pattern I think.

Was a tad bit worried about not using steel powder. But, this turned out pretty darn nice. In fact, it's one beautiful knife when outfitted with that gorgeous handle. The idea of drilling the tang and filling with nickel/silver was genius! Thanks a million for all your time and effort to film, edit and post this video. Great channel and fantastic videos. Stay safe out there. 👍👍👍

Ty. I saw tang trick first by Liam Hoffman if I rem. Alec Steele did it too.
excellent work as always, sir! can't wait to see the whole bearings done.
Shurap did this awhile ago with smaller ball bearings and his work turned out amazing

The reason this knife ended up without a pattern was that there was no cayenne pepper in the canister

Those welded balls are from a grease test called, oddly enough, the 4-ball weld test. The one on top is pressed down on the bottom 3 while they all spin, and you measure how much pressure it takes to make them weld together.

You take chances. This is one aspect of your appeal. But no powder was a ballsy move! Very nice result. Your use of a soft plug in the tang gets a big nod of approval. All in all? Impressive.

I like that oxpho blue. It works great for touchup on my rifles. It also works amazing on older axes and such.
know what? ball bearings are nostalgic for me. In my childhood we use ball bearing balls as Marble leader\shooter in our marble games (they shoot so accurate + strong)

Man, those crucibles in the background are just a big old tease aren't they! Love the video as always!!!
Mr. Beetle, I started using titanium dioxide to coat my cans too and it works well. I just learned that you can keep using the powder over and over if you mix it and use it in the same container. Just add water to the older stuff that’s hard and caked up and it’ll get pliable again.
Awesome. Nice job 👍 keep posting. Me like it
That finish on the blade actually looks really nice and with that beutiful handle that's a seriously good looking knife 👍
IMO, handforged ballbearing steel, makes the most suitable blade, for a fixed blade knife.
Nice work on the knife bro 🤩well done bro 😎👏👏👍👍
Awesome job. Wish I had the knowledge an tools to be able to forge my own knife.
That's a really nice looking knife beautiful job
Good job
Still a beautiful knife! Good job , Bro!
When "failure" results in something thats still awesome. Nice knife bud
Love your videos! I learn a lot. The one thing I notice as a theme though is the phrase "I don't want to" / "i'm not going to" which are cop outs. I think you've done brilliant work and most of the time when you say those things I am defeated as well because it seems like you've struck gold and are walking away. 9/10 your are 9/10 of the way there. Don't hurt me anymore. Finish it the way you imagined it.
Holy moly!
Been watching your channel for a good while now and still enjoy your approach to it all, and of course the finished product is always very pleasing. I'm always Inspired by your dedication to just do it and get on with s#@t no matter what the outcome. Always nice to see no matter the outcome.
I finally got round to watching this one, Ive seen the Nakiri video which is really cool, and like how you managed to weld up this one so well but hmmm definitely needed something else in there for contrast...still a cool blade though, especially like that lovely burl.
Do you ever watch your videos and go, "huh, I should have done that differently?" I do when I watch stuff I've recorded of myself. Worst though, I hardly ever apply what I learn from it because I tend to do the same mistakes. LOL Love this vid! You make me wish I lived in a house to do my own forging.
Beautiful
Steve I really liked the handle making part of your earlier videos, please consider bringing back
Absolutely stunning knife regardless of the pattern mate. That handle is brilliant! I wish you showed us how you make those more and the steps you go through. Its always incredible to see how beautifully they turn out.

Yes, I Would like to see how you fashioned the handle.
I'm working on my press.. it's just a 5 ton...got to start somewhere..but I had a thought for a pattern.. square tube.. make a 1095 cross and drop bearings and powdered steel into the four chamberes... Also add 52100 as a border to the cross to separate the two types of 1095.. then make it a twist Damascus.. and split that and San Mai it on a 1095 core.
Your laugh is so funny 😂
It's still fine-fine piece of knife👍
I'm impressed you resisted the urge to say "that's what she said". The knife looks cool man they don't all have to be pattern steel. Its a clean looking blade. Well done!
I used to work in electroplating and we used a heated soap soak tank to remove oil and grease.
That was pretty dope at 6:01.
Hadn't thought of using softer metal in the tang, but wow, that makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the tip, and BTW the knife looks great whether it's patterned or not!

Beautiful knive sir!
It's a nice knife 🔪. Cheers
Great finished result! May have been a little better mixing the bearings with some powder, but just the fact it's made out of ball bearings is really cool!
That a cool balled knife! Lol
Man even though the pattern didn't come out he way you planned, this knife came out looking excellent! I want to try out a canister one of these days!

The more I watch and learn about this knife making jazz.. the more I’m seeing how the science of heat treating is where you separate the men from the boys.. (and girls) great vid
Double U O Double U! ;) thumbs up matey.
30 seconds in I already like this guy...
Still a great looking knife, thxs!
Literally balls of steel... ;o Or, fire... goodness gracious!!
I love it
You have been posting a lot of videos here lately. Does it have to do with the cooler weather? Love the videos thanks for all of your hard work.
"balls... eh he" got me every time 😂
That’s a nice looking knife I’d say.
For paterns at your final metal piece are nessacary 2 different steels. Using your method (with steel balls encapsulated) can just add inside to the canister metal powder in order to avoid the gaps and the same time you can have this difference at you final piece of steel. Then can have your paterns!!!
Loved the video you made the worlds best steak knife 👍
Looks like a good Skinner
That's a really nice handle too. I don't know how you could achieve it, but if you could coat the balls with a layer of darker or lighter steel, then you might end up with the lines you were looking for? I suspect that the actual bearings will look good forged with steel powder, it could make some intricate shapes if there isn't any residual grease to ruin the forging.
902 lacquer thinner takes the grease of nicely too
This just goes to show you that you don't need some crazy patterning to have an entertaining and informative video. I would be curious to see what kind of project/tool/knife you would come up with from forging just a couple/few of those balls together--maybe one of those welded bunches?
Ahhh!!! A video that’s back to normal.. Nestor knoxs and me we’re starting to worry. A little scared for a bit, kinda like walking down a dark ally and can’t see anything but all you hear is heavy breathing and like someone is sanding on something that’s about to kill us and all I could think is, did I bring any bandaids with me...!!! ❤️🙏🏻💪🏼💪🏼👊🏼👍🏻 GreenBeetle for President!!!!🎊🎊🥰
If you can't have an interesting Damascus pattern, having a beautiful, well-made, sharp ass functional knife that anyone would be happy to own is a good second prize.
I've seen other smiths soak blades in coffee after the acid soak to bring out damascus colors, you should try it.
THE ANGEL VOICE IS BACK!!!
Can’t say that I’m surprised that you didn’t get an etch pattern but despite that it’s a beautiful looking knife. Great video as usual.
No eye grabbing pattern but the video was still awesome!! The knife turned out great. Keep them coming!
Your gigglin when you say "Balls". LOL
I’ve never thought about the nickel rod trick, great idea dude! Any idea when the blade shows will be back around?
Plain? Plainly great! Really good looking :)
oo just thought of this try making a blade that looks like a big feather
Do I see what almost looks like a hamon from the spine tempering? It seems like there's a super slight different in color between that and the edge.
A knife made from bearings? That's genius. You can throw it in your knife drawer and it will stop your other knives from rubbing up against each other and wearing out.
I once made a knife out of ball bearing steel (52100) boy it took time to grind after heat treating.
Looks like they are doing some "4-ball wear testing" at the grease plant. This is typical load carrying capability test for grease under high or extreme pressures. If the speed and pressures are high enough, the friction can weld the balls together. Cool stuff!

It looks really nice, even without any pattern. A beautilful knife and the handle is great to. But, we want pattern !!
