Forging a Knife From Ball Bearings

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Forge welding 1/2" ball bearings into a knife. Fun. Unexpected results and a few "ball" yokes, of course.

Thanks for watching! The final picture looks like there's a line in the finish a half inch in front of bolster. It's from tape used to put the knife in a sharpener and wipes off. I first saw the tang -plug trick seen here performed by Liam Hoffman and Alec Steele.

While this was probably the most uninteresting canister forge weld in terms of patterns, it's pretty damn impressive to get such a consistent forge weld from a bunch of balls!

Ya know...the fact that there wasn't a pattern is a good thing. That means you did an extremely good job at forge welding. It shows your skill.

I did this exact same build on my channel 6 months ago. You have to etch the blade much longer for 52100 and still its not dramatic. I used 1/4" ball bearings and they came out about an 1.5" on the knife in a kind of weird honeycomb pattern with slightly darker lines between them. I think I did over-forge it a bit because when I etched it out of the canister it looked amazing. Next time I'd do this with a narrower billet or smaller bearings.

Was a tad bit worried about not using steel powder. But, this turned out pretty darn nice. In fact, it's one beautiful knife when outfitted with that gorgeous handle. Those welded balls are from a grease test called, oddly enough, the 4-ball weld test. The one on top is pressed down on the bottom 3 while they all spin, and you measure how much pressure it takes to make them weld together.

Mr. Beetle, I started using titanium dioxide to coat my cans too and it works well. I just learned that you can keep using the powder over and over if you mix it and use it in the same container. Just add water to the older stuff that’s hard and caked up and it’ll get pliable again.

I'm working on my press.. it's just a 5 ton...got to start somewhere..but I had a thought for a pattern.. square tube.. make a 1095 cross and drop bearings and powdered steel into the four chamberes... Also add 52100 as a border to the cross to separate the two types of 1095.. then make it a twist Damascus.. and split that and San Mai it on a 1095 core.

For paterns at your final metal piece are nessacary 2 different steels. Using your method (with steel balls encapsulated) can just add inside to the canister metal powder in order to avoid the gaps and the same time you can have this difference at you final piece of steel. Then can have your paterns!!!

That's a really nice handle too. I don't know how you could achieve it, but if you could coat the balls with a layer of darker or lighter steel, then you might end up with the lines you were looking for? I suspect that the actual bearings will look good forged with steel powder, it could make some intricate shapes if there isn't any residual grease to ruin the forging.
