LYRICS:
Forever Flame
I clasp the closing of the cycle
Soak up the idols’ afterglow
And I fall
Forever follow in the flame
I give all
Forever following the flame
Winding round
Over and over again
Fated to wander
Strike me down
Over and over again
To come back stronger
I find my hope among the embers
Rest long remembered where they glow
And I fall
Forever follow in the flame
I give all
Forever following the flame
Winding round
Over and over again
Fated to wander
Strike me down
Over and over again
To come back stronger
And I fall
Forever follow in the flame
I give all
Forever following the flame
Ever on and on
Always come back stronger

So this song was something I wanted to make myself but it was also an opportunity to do something for the minority of fans for whom Fires Fade wasn't to their tastes. While that song is a bombastic, complex behemoth dealing with the overarching themes of the series, this one (while a somewhat similar musical genre), is structurally and thematically its opposite - simple, subtle, direct and focused on the emotional journey of the player/protagonists through the series. It was also an opportunity to do something in the style of some great bands like Type O Negative, Paradise Lost & Ghost. I've always been attracted to music with heavy, hard instrumentation juxtaposed with softer, melodic vocals. I hope you guys enjoy it. It really was a pleasure to make these two songs - Dark Souls is an incredibly inspiring series for me and I'm glad so many of you feel the same. Big love - Gav

I am so happy you made this, cause Fires Fade (while a great song) wasn't to my tastes entirely, as you put it. I'm a huge fan of Fires Far, and I feel that this is a true and proper follow up to that piece since they are structured so similarly; they're both about the journey you take as a player rather than the world that the characters inhabit, and the style reflects that greatly. Fantastic work as always, here's hoping that the DLCs bring some more inspiration from this game!

+Heide Knight Well, just like the lore in dark souls, I guess you could interpret each song in multitudes of way. My take on it and the reason I wrote the comment is: I understand this song as the repetitive struggle of forever linking the flame only to have it come close to the end of the cycle, and following (linking) it again. So I definitively understand if you have a different understanding of the songs

Fires Fade was this great ode to a story of despair, of the fire dying down, tying down the stories of those that gave their spirits keeping it aflame. An epic about the overarching story... this one definitely felt like the personal tale of each and every one of those heroes, like moths drawn to the embers of the bonfires, dying over and over again with only their determination and willpower allowing them to push onward... God dammit, Gav, pumping all of these majestic songs is way too much for my heart!! Can´t love them so much, can I? :D

And by the time I've finished listening to it for at least the 100th time, I've already bought it and have it as my ringtone on my phone (as well as sharing it on social media). +DahliasDarkside This may seem like a strange segue, but bear with me, DahliasDarkside... You just hit on why Steely Dan kept getting engineering Grammys. Aside from hiring on tons of backup artists until they had a crew that made the sound they were going for, those two perfectionists had the goal (one they achieved) of recording so all instruments were distinctly audible and discernible throughout their songs. If you don't mind bluesy music and want to test me on this, go find a copy of Aja and hear for yourself.

I love Fires Fade and I think it's one of your best songs ever, right up there with The Lucky Ones and Don't say a word. But, man, this is just unbelievable. The power, the concentrated rhythm, so in contrast with the sprawling tones of Fires Far, just sends chills down my spine and really drives home the force of what was portrayed here. This song is rather like the Ashen One, and all Dark Souls protagonists really. An unstoppable force that blasts on and on until the very end. Thank you Gav.

In Dark Souls 1 we learned the inevitability of the cycle, and it filled us with dread In Dark Souls 2 we are given the chance to break free of the cycle and leave this doomed world behind. It gave us hope. In Dark Souls 3,we come to the end of an age. After countless cycles and untold aeons have past, we arise from the ashes of innumerable kingdoms. To break the cycle, as the final die are cast. we fall down to our knees and embrace the earth at last. Finally we are at peace

Nice condensed look at the whole concept of a Dark Souls main character. You managed to infuse meaning and purpose to a character without any lines or background, and it reflects the spirit of the series as well, to glean meaning from thing we are not given much context or information about at all. Also some fantastic voice work on this song.

Nothing is more terrifying that an enemy that will not stay dead, and worse, is guaranteed to get stronger every time you kill it. Of all the terrible and dangerous things in dark souls, you the player are by far the most daunting. Heck, imagine being the bosses, you keep killing this guy but each time you take a little more damage, and it just keeps coming and coming. that has to be nerve wracking.

Holy shit man, yeah it's more straight forward, but it really hits home ... Been singing along a lot tonight, adding some guttural "harmonics" to the post-solo chorus, giving it a Ghost Brigade - kinda vibe and tricking me into feeling cool haha! I think the mix profits a lot from the more-present-than-usual drums. Kick, bass and guitar chugs compliment each other really well and cause significant amounts of headbanging! Also, I could swear that you mastered this one differently - the low end seems much fuller (less high-passed? or maybe it's that dark piano adding a lot of lows?), especially in comparison to Fires Fade, and you managed to squeeze much more volume out of this one (I'll leave the loudness war discussion to more competent folks, IMO it feels well-rounded). tldr: sonically a LEAP forwad, and very strong feeling-wise!!

+BKM Glad you noticed! I actually had to re-record all the bass parts with a P-Bass, the first one with a fender jazz didn't quite pronounce its fundamentals enough. Lot of subby mud. I also just spent an awful lot of time mixing it and used a different compressor at the master stage (Waves CLA-76 Blue) in conjunction with the fab Filter Pro-L. It seemed to give the whole mix a nice soft, round, thumpy feel. I was actually worried the kick was too clicky around 4-5k but in hindsight I like it, it helps move the chugs along like you said

+miracleofsound I like to use a SSL clone during mastering, never used an 1176 so far. I think I should give it a try since I really like what I'm hearing! In my experience, you can get away with a lot of 4-6 in the kick ... There's a sound there that I've been chasing for a while now: ever listened to Necrophagist's Onset of Putrefaction? Their kick and bass both have a very distinct character in that range and compliment each other really well, which makes them appear almost as one instrument. Super cool. And I think you managed to create a similar feel in this mix - kick, bass and chugs just gel really really well in that range! Again, huge props for that mix!

Both this and "Fires Fade" were EPIC. No other words can describe them, and I've already downloaded both into my cellphone, as with most of your songs. "Fires Fade" is all about the struggle of the Keepers of the Flame, wanting to keep the fire alive, while "Forever Flame" is basically a tribute to the Unkindled/the player and their determination to keep on fighting. Personally, I would love a third song with emphasis on the "Age of Dark" perspective. Lots of people talk about it in the games and others wonder if it wouldn't just be better to let the fire fades for good. I would love it to be something that would also be gothic rock, but far more sinister and ominous, as if mocking and taunting those who desperately seek to keep a dying flame alive in face of the inevitable dominion of darkness, hailing the rise of the Dark Lord. Either way, Miracle of Sound is eternally awesome! :)

You know, that sounds amazing. People just see the darkness as evil though, however it isn't. The Abyss is evil, which has ties to darkness and the want to not light the flame. However darkness itself in this universe is not evil, people who believe in it just have a different mindset, one with less folly I believe.

Your Dark Souls and Witcher series songs have been among my favorites. I'm a little surprised to find there was anything less than a positive response to Fires Fade. I found the whole thing beyond impressive; it took what you established in Fires Far and grew upon it beautifully. That said-- MORE Dark Souls songs are hardly a bad thing. ;) I love this one too; a really nice stylistic homage to Type O Negative. Lastly; just want to say I've been listening to your stuff for a few years now, and I think your vocal performance has grown tremendously over time. It's impressive and inspiring in equal measure!
