Here in Chicago, to prep for a new train station, Metra tore up 300 yards of hillside next to Ravenswood Ave which consisted of many 100 year old trees, smaller vegetation, and most likely a healthy soil upkeep. Before the awful tear down, on a particularly hot summer day, I was 100 yards from this little biosphere and the temperature was 106 F. When I turned on to Ravenswood, the temp dropped 12 degrees to 94. I could literally feel a type of natural AC cooling the area. On a very steep road out of Etna, north of Pittsburgh on Rt. 8, I remember years of driving up this road during summer and experiencing that same AC cooling effect which could ONLY be the product of trees and the biosphere they uphold. I wonder when someone is going to look at what we do to trees, considering the toilet paper angle, and put a stop to it all. We owe our existence to trees and not because we have something with which to clean our poopy butts, but because trees and their biospheres give us air to breathe and cooling to fight heat. Humans figured out how to get a space rocket to return to Earth standing upright, but we just can’t stop mowing down trees. 😢

Wood is needed, but it is important that it is harvested sustainably. In our country, over 97% of forests are state-owned. Then sustainable forest management, where more trees are planted than cut down, is possible and real.

Similarly, last summer in Scotland, when we were enduring record-breaking temperatures, I spent a few days beside the stream at the bottom of my garden. There it is heavily shaded by trees and was certainly several degrees cooler.
