Dr. Hallaq analysis are very interesting, and this is the third video I am watching for him, total of 6 hours in 2 days, right after the Podcast he had 9 months ago in Arabic (English subtitle is available too) I really recommend non Arabic speakers to watch it too, information rich podcast, I am a Palestinian myself, Dr. Edward Said & Dr. Wael Hallaq are really distinguished Palestinian scholars to be proud of as a Palestinian myself.

Excellent interview, amazing guest Dr. Hallaq, with amazingly precise descriptions and statements. This guy is a genuine genius. Nevertheless, there is something I want to point out regarding a claimed symbolism about mountains shaking and speaking. 40:45. There is no symbolism in Quran, meaning if Allah سبحانه وتعالى says something then it must be taken literally, and not metaphorically or symbolisticly. So mountains speak in fact, every thing in the worlds glorifies Allah.

The littéral and the symbolic are one in Quran. Though Quran has only truths and no mythologies, the truths we cannot see, we must depict ( perhaps not imagine) ourselves. We ‘see’ Allah thru his creation, angels thru their resulting actions. We see death or the dead but never the Angel of death.

What a great conversation. This is the first time I heard Dr. Hallaq and I have nothing but awe and praise for his intellectual insights and even more for his boldness in criticising the Modernity which has brought hell on earth.

Hello, iam an Economics student and i would like to have a video of "Moving Towards a Zero-interest Economy" event by the speaker Dr.Asad Zaman please. Thank you so much.
The thing Wael discusses about the interaction between the military and the society, I am a bit confused that the military personnel isn't or shouldn't be part of society or in what and how much capacity? (Cannot make a better question atm)

Professor Hallaq was elaborating on how the soldier, who was originally part of a complex relationship with a social society (like a village), was one of the ways in which modernity through the nation-state changed the subjectivity of the human being. He goes on to compare this with Islamicate military institutions in history like the Mamluks and Janissaries, which were essentially a segregated social class of their own from civil society. In other words, the standing armies of modern Europe were sourced from its civil population and that had an impact on the molding of modern man's subjectivity, unlike those of the premodern Islamicate who were basically a community unto themselves.

Try to be respectful when you talk to people and reflect the meaning of your name… by the way both the guest and the host voices were very clear.
