Brother Paul. This is one of the few comments I put on KZread throughout years of passive watching. That’s because I’m now witnessing an intellectual discussion between two muslims about an Islamic idea with a human scale, argued with eloquence, pride and empathy. Having been frustrated by the waste land of ideas in our traditional Arab countries, I can now see how God almighty has His ways in seeing his grand scheme revealed to mankind where hope was thought to be lost. Jazak Allah Khair. You and your select guests are a breeze to my heart.

Salams Brothers, I am currently in undergrad in the US. I feel very inadequate due to my inability to address the falsehoods being spread by my professors/institution. Often times, they will make remarks about religion while looking pointedly at me (I wear hijab). Although I try to combat their ignorance with some of what I've heard on this channel and others (alongside what I've read from important texts), I feel lost and alone. Not many of the other Muslims I've met on campus are concerned with defending the faith, and some are blatantly abandoning it. I'm just very saddened and disheartened. Nevertheless, I am sending thanks for your work, as it certainly makes me feel less defeated and alone. May Allah bless you for your work.

Salam Sister, I command you for being indignant about your professors/institutions's ill-remarks about Islam and your struggle to fight it. Fisrt of all, your struggle will not go in vain and you get more Ajir for your solotary struggle. However, know that you or other muslims in your campus are not held accountable for whatever the result of your professor/institutions practice as long as you've tried to the best of your ability. so at this point, give you're self some slack and don't take it too hard on yourself fighting to the point of losing your Imaan. Trust in Allah. disbelivers scheme but Allah is better schemer.

Thank for another great episode with Imam tom! I know I said this before but will say it again!!: If only you had been doing this when I was in grad school! It would have been so helpufl! When I was in grad school, I read Foucault, and Wael Hallaq Restating Orientalism and the Impossible State! I completely agree with you that Hallaq's prose is clunky and hard to read. And that this is all Foucault's fault. And yet the convergence between Islamist critiques of modernity and postmodern critiques of modernity (most of hese from the political left) are very much there. I should say though that I was impressed but not too suprised when I learned that Hallaq is a Christian. For one thing, Arabic speaking Chiristians have a different relationship with Islamicate culture then European Western Christian have. ARabic is there language too. They had complete freedom to pracite their religion under the Sharia including conducting marriage, settling business/ criminal dsputes between correlgionist, etc. In oder to do their jobs, Christian clerics typically had to learn about the Sharia (including morize the Qur'an) along with their own text so they could, and often did, advocate for their community's rights in an Islamic langauge under an Islamic framework. And again, ARabic is the native tongjue of many Christians (Including Hallaq himself), and so for them the Qur'an as an influential ARabic language work of literature/ prose/poetry has to be approached with reverence and respect even if they don't share our theological convictions. This can lso be seen the attitudes Arabic speaking Christian clerics themselves. The former Catholic Bishop of Jerusalem, (a representative of the Holy Sea no less!), Bishop Hilarion Capucci knew Surah Maryam and loved to recite it. He was also, one of the very few Catholic priest, to support Palestine! I want to end my comments by quoting written by journalist Nicolas Pelham bout the disintegration of the Middle East called Holy Lands where he tries to understand how cuch a tolerant, pluralistic region devolved into violent intolerance that we are familiar with. Among the many Christians quoted in that book was a Palestinian Armenian scholar named George Hintlian, am who lost 70 relatives in the Armenian genocide. About secular nationalism, decline of the Ottoman Empire, and increasing intolerance in the region, he says: "Our mistake was to ask for equality. We had everything. The bloody missionaries opened our eyes to convince us we had nothing.". I think it is this perpsective that motivates Hallaq to say that he would rather live under a Sharia system. And dont forget, Hallaq is Palestinian! We (Muslims( did not cause the Nakba! Euorpean Zionists did!

🔴 *The Apostle Paul's Terrible Error* 🔴 📍In the Old Testament: =>the Holy Place contains: Table of Showbread (Showbread on it) + Candlestick + Altar of Incense. =>the Holy of Holies contains: Ark of the Covenant " Hebrews 9:2-4 " *“²For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. ³ And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; ⁴ Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant”.* There are three errors : - Firstly, Paul mentioned the Table *AND* the Showbread, knowing that the latter is already *ON* the Table. (Exodus 25:30 “And thou shalt set *upon* the table shewbread before me alway.”) - The second error is that Paul mentioned the golden censer in the Holy of Holies. Moreover, If we suppose that the golden censer is an element in the Holy of Holies, why was it not mentioned in the Torah or in the Jewish heritage? It is not logical that it's not mentioned in the Torah and then Paul mentioned it after that. The fourth verse mentioned the golden censer then the Ark of the Covenant which contained the Golden Pot, Aaron’s Rod, and the Tablets of the Stone; if the golden censer was of Aaron’s legacy, then Paul should have mentioned it among the contents of the Ark of the Covenant, not in the Holy of Holies. - The third error is that Paul did not mention the Altar of Incense at all. - *Father Matta El Meskeen. The Epistle to the Hebrews: Explanation and Study, pp. 519-520:* the Altar of Incense: the Apostle Paul did not mention it here, and the reasons and interpretations differed.... and in Hebrews 9:4, he mentioned a golden censer, baffling the commentators, because it is known that the Altar of Incense is in the Sanctuary. - *John Gill's Exposition:* but here a difficulty arises, how this can be said to have been in the holy of holies, and within the vail, when, according to Moses, it was without the vail, and was only carried within on the day of atonement; and so Philo the Jew (a) places it in the other part of the tabernacle; and it seems as if it was to avoid this difficulty, that the Ethiopic version has removed it from this verse to verse the second, and put it among the things that were in the holy place. - *Franz Delitzsch. Commentary On The Epistle To Hebrews, pp. 54-55:* Such being the Hellenistic usage, and in particular that that of Josephus and Philo, whose phraseology has so many points of resemblance to that of other author, it seems impossible to escape the conclusion that θυμιατηριον means here the incense-altar, and nothing else. It would be, moreover, a quite inexplicable omission in this connection, had he said nothing about it. But if θυμιατηριον here I the altar of incense, the sacred writer appears to be involved in the grosse error of supposing that this golden altar, of which Philo says correctly that it stood between the golden candlestick and the holy table… and Bleek draws thence the conclusion that he could not have been a Jew of Palestine: but even supposing him to have been an Alexandrine Jew, he must have been a monster of ignorance and forgetfulness to be capable of such a mistake. - *Ellicot’s Commentary for English Readers:* The incense-altar and the ark are coupled together, and the word which describes their relation to the Holiest Place is that which, a little later in this verse, distinctly signifies "containing." So weighty is this consideration that many have been unable to avoid the conclusion that the writer has erred in this matter of detail; and various suppositions have been resorted to in explanation of his mistake. - *Expositor's Greek Testament:* ... and the versions of Symmachus and Theodotion in Exodus 31 use θυμιατήριον for “altar of incense”. Besides, the form of the word indicates that it could be used of anything on which incense is offered. It was, therefore, understood of the “altar” by Clement Alex. and other fathers; by Calvin, who says, “quo nomine altare suffitus vel thymiamatis potius intelligo quam thuribulum;” and by most modern scholars. As has frequently been urged it is incredible that in describing the furniture of the tabernacle there should be no mention of the altar of incense. Difficulty has been felt regarding the position here assigned to it, for in fact it stood outside the veil; and the author has been charged with error. ✴️One of the commentators say that Paul mentioned the golden censer in the Holy of Holies for fear of theft and to be in a safe place, and this is very funny because the commentator forgot that the Candlestick and the Table are plated with gold. Therefore, the commentary is ridiculous, because even if the golden censer was moved to the Holy of Holies for fear of theft, the Candlestick and the Table are plated with gold too (Exodus 25). 🔴 The question remains, why did Paul not mention the Altar of Incense? There are two solutions, the sweetest of which is bitter; either Paul did not write by inspiration or he is an ignorant liar.

Excerpt for the curious: In Transformations, Wael Hallaq describes living in the classical period of Islamic law as being characterized by a strong emphasis on legal reasoning and the application of legal principles to real-world situations. He argues that this approach was replaced by a more literal interpretation of Islamic law in the modern era, leading to a decline in the quality of legal reasoning and a decrease in the ability of Islamic law to address contemporary issues.
