Foreigners fighting for Ukraine | DW Documentary

The war in Ukraine attracts thousands of voluntary foreign fighters who help fend off the Russian invasion. Some are experienced soldiers, others have never been in the military. While they may lack training, one thing they do possess is resolve.
One foreign fighter is 19-year-old Kapon. At least, this is a name he has taken on as he wants neither his real name nor his home country to be public. He's from Latin America, that should suffice. Kapon wants to fight back on the Ukrainian side against the Russian aggressor units. That is his mission, as he could no longer stand the horrible images of the Ukrainian victims. He wanted to do something about it. Now, the teenager has gone to the front. But he has neither fighting experience nor military training. Instead of killing, his mission used to be saving lives: Kapon worked as an emergency medical technician in his home country. Will he be able to handle the horror of war? Will he survive? A report by Ruth Krause.

I respect his willingness to go, but going without proper equipment and combat experience only makes him a liability to the fighters next to him on the front line. If you don't have the requisite experience to make yourself a net positive asset in the fight, you shouldn't be joining this fight. I myself am an army veteran who has served in combat zones, and even I don't think I would be very useful in this conflict.

I don't think that this boy would even survive army training. As a civilian, some of us grow up watching all those propaganda Hollywood film and playing video games, thinking that's the situation on an active war zone but when they reach there, the dose of reality hits hard. Even some of military people didn't even want to go there but they didn't have any choice. Imagine if this boy joins the military, he could end up in martial court for abandoning the task he swore to do. People said that he's EMT, he could be useful. But as an MD myself, being chaotic in a safe environment such as in the ambulance or emergency ward is way different that performing the task to save life while being shot at. So, if you can't help, just don't make the situation any worst by being a liability. Doing nothing is better than making it worst for the rest of your squad.

The Foreign Brigade is doing the right thing by demanding combat experience. This lad seems very useful as he has medical expertise but as soon as he saw the reality of war he ran back home to his mummy. fighting the Russians in this war is very different from any conflict since World War II. Almost all wars after 1945 have been low intensity, (usually one side dominating the other) . In this war however the dominant are the Russians who are using overwhelming modern weaponry & technology to decimate the Ukrainians. CNN might spin it one way but the Russians are dropping the equivalent of millions of pounds of missiles, bombs, shells, & rockets down on them. Even trained soldiers are realizing the frontlines of Ukraine are a meat grinder. What can you really do when the military your fighting is leveling buildings around you with hypersonic missiles & cluster bombs dropped from the heavens. The Ukrainians are going to be deeply hard pressed to come out on the winning side of this war if they want their country to have any standing buildings left.

@@slytherinsky It's not even a real problem if you go in without any experience. As of right now the legion for foreign volunteers accepts men who have no military experience whatsoever. The most important thing is that, if you want to go, you truly know what you will be facing and that you accept whatever may come to you during your service. The Ukrainian army will train you for about 6 weeks, which should be enough to teach you the standard infantry tactics, first-aid and equipment handling. If you are not sure you can't mentally handle constant shelling from the Russians while living in poor conditions, then you should not go. If you're on the frontline, the lowest is around 3K Euro net. The problem is foreign guys without experience coming to Ukraine, hanging bored on AirBnB's and returning home because they're not needed. Only the real professionals enlisted quickly. Actually there's a lines of locals in mobilization centers, some even with combat experience waiting for enlistment. IDK why our authorities threw that idea of a Legion to a world and *ucked it up.

If that kid will undergone the selection process of the FFL, the physical endurance test alone will surely make him quit in just one week. Second, he has a strong connection to his friend and family back home to the point that his parents helped him to cover his expenses to travel in Ukraine. This is the kind of person who easilly gets homesicked and will eventually quit or deserted.

So basically, Mr. Attack on Titan wannabee wasted everyone's time, money and resources so that he could have his adventure and chicken out at the last minute? And what does "the situation became too intense" mean? That he finally realizes that it wasn't a game, and that he's about to be shipped to the front line and possibly die? Didn't he say he was prepared for all that earlier. You know who the posers are when their main priority is getting cool looking gear and taking the right shots with the right faded background to post on their social media.

fighting the Russians in this war is very different from any conflict since World War II.

To standardize the process for civilians going to the Ukranian war the following should happen. For a civilian to be able to join the Ukranian Foreign Legion they should have the following: A. A demonstrably useful skill and B). A Certificate of basic military competence Countries should set up Academies that provide basic military competence training. Civilians go to learn fundamentals like: *Military Fitness *Weapons familiarity *Fieldcraft *Personal Admin *How to operate in a military organisation. When the civilian passes through this academy, they can be issued with a Certificate of Basic Military Competence. This could be standardized across friendly nations, in conjunction with Ukranian embassies. As such civilians meeting both criteria are deemed suitable for foreign legion membership. I think this would: 1. Ensure every civilian going to the Ukranian frontline is of a decent standard. 2. It will give Ukraine access to people with a useful skill set who otherwise would have been barred due to no training. 3. It will give guys like Capon, who was going to go anyway (but with good intentions) a legitimate way of getting there.

@Alec Holland I don't doubt there is a sizable element of that type of people. There is no question a lot of infantry frontline types enjoy battle and a proportion are just killers who are hiding behind a cause that is socially acceptable. However there are a lot of well meaning if ignorant people (Like Capon) who are going over because they want to help. May as well make the most of those people

@@tonykennedy8592 right.... Like I doubt many are going who want adventure but have zero interest in Ukraine's fate, or justice for Russia. For most it's probably both, and I would wager the primary reason being adventure. And that's probably the same for most soldiers, volunteer or not. I imagine it is rare to go and fight in a war, if you have no interest in adventure, and find the entire prospect to be a terrible, frightening task, just based on strong values alone. Effectively, it doesn't really matter either way.

I hate autocrats from the bottom of my heart and i would fight a war for democracy even if it was not in my country.
