Defending NATO borders in Eastern Europe | DW Documentary

Keeping the war in eastern Europe away from NATO borders is one of the German Bundeswehr’s jobs. An armored battalion from Thuringia is one of the spearheads of NATO’s rapid reaction force responsible for defending member nation Lithuania, in the event of an emergency.
"The squad can fight any opponent. But I hope it’ll never have to do that.” This is how the commander of the 10th Armored Division of the Bundeswehr, Major General Ruprecht von Butler, assessed the performance of the Thuringian armored unit after inspecting their exercises on Lüneburg Heath.
The armored battalion 393 from Bad Frankenhausen carried out a combat shooting exercise over several days, here. They used 30 modern Leopard 2 main battle tanks, supported by 14 Puma infantry fighting vehicles from a Bavarian battalion. The General’s praise was aimed at the core fighting force of NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). This must be ready for fast deployment: They have two to seven days to be ready to counter a potential aggressor anywhere in the Alliance’s territory. The task force numbers some 10,000 soldiers from eight NATO states - among them many from Thuringia and Saxony.
The film observes the task force during their training exercises in Germany. The film also records a NATO maneuver in May 2023, on the Italian island of Sardinia. But attention is being drawn to eastern Europe . That region is the focus for NATO strategists. This is due to Russia’s war in Ukraine, a conflict that’s now been going on for more than two years. Here on the eastern flank - NATO’s official name for the region - armored infantry from Bad Salzungen in Thuringia have been deployed since mid-2023. They’re part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence or EFP battlegroup responsible for defending the Baltic country of Lithuania.

Ex British soldier who spent 7 very happy years of his 16 years of service in Germany. Now it's Germany's turn to be based elsewhere in case the unthinkable becomes a reality. I hope the Bundeswehr youngsters deploying get everythng they deserve to be getting from their politicians back in the safety of Berlin. Munitions/food/fuel/weaponry/funds for training/repairs and most of all if and when these fine young Germans need to deploy for the real thing those same politicians don't suddenly lose their sense of duty toward their soldiers. They deserve the very best their country can offer them and that has to include the loyalties of thier political leaders. German soldiers have never been in doubt they will always do their duty and do it well. German political leaders rarely inspire confidence however.

The Dutch Armed Forces does not have to be 50% male/female. An army that is 100% male sounds like an army that does not let females enter, thus not letting all skilled personnel who want to serve in, and does not consider working environment to it's full potential. So no, i think a forced 100% male army is not better.

The aim of the plan is for no Irishman to be without an apartment. Ireland, a non-NATO member, has also announced that it will spend only 0.5% of Ireland's GDP on armaments. According to the newly adopted Fiala Act, the Czech Republic spends 2% of GDP on armaments. Do we have any reasons to think that one of those countries may be attacked in a close futur (months, years)? Also, when its said that the troops are there only to secure the border in the eventual case of an attack... Is this official version plausible? Does it make sense and fit with what we see? Or to the contrary, does it look more like they are planning for something, to explain all the soldiers & material sent? Thanks for your answers

Yes, threats were made. Russian TV, with Putin's approval, likes to threaten to bomb Warsaw. And Putin to talk about restoring the borders of the USSR (which includes conquering the Baltic states). Putin has also made other political demands -- demanding that these countries leave NATO. I, for one, doubt that Russia can afford a new war, but as far as threats and statements by the Russian government are concerned, by all means, the threat of war exists.

In short, yes. Putin does want to control these countries because they were all part of the soviet union. Another thing to look at is Kaliningrad and how the baltic states can be pushed from all geographical points in order to surrender. Baltic states may also play a larger role in the meaningfulness of the NATO alliance. If article 5 is not activated and nato allies don't engage in helping the baltic states then NATO starts shaking.

Why would anybody care what Putin or anybody else from RU says? Nothing they say can be trusted, Lavrov told us few days before the invasion that it was silly to think they would invade Ukraine.

If Russia was a good neighbor with no record of making mess in non Nato countries, there would be no need to join Nato in order to be secured. Other country's pacy choice is none of Russia's decission. Russia has never been a friendly neighbor and that is why Eastern European countries joined Nato as qucily as they could. You can not balme them. It would be like blaming a victim for callng the police because she did not want to be hurt anymore. Russia should look in the mirror. Nato is an excuse for Putin, not a reason. Ukraine had no chance to join and Putin invaded anyway. Because he could.

It's sad to see the state of readiness Germany has. The weapons are not the issue the training for actual combat is weak. Especially comparing the other nato countries mainly the US.

The EFP is a tripwire force, it acts as a deterrent not because it will be able to hold off a Russian assault alone, but because it means any Russian attack will also mean killing German, Belgian, Norwegian, American ect ect. troops. This means those countries have an impetus to retaliate which if they do, almost guarantees the failure of any Russian operation. The end result is that Russia is effectively deterred.
