Defenders of the Sky: Future Ukrainian F-16 Pilots train in the UK (Documentary)

For two years, our cameras have been documenting the work across UK Defence to train and equip Ukraine.
Episode two of our documentary series follows Wing Commander ‘Carlos’, who is tasked with leading the UK’s delivery of flight training to future Ukrainian F-16 pilots. After some initial English language training, his students take to the skies of Britain for the first time. We also catch up with the British Army and Sergeant Shaun Dick from 4 SCOTS, as they continue their Junior Leader training for the Ukrainian infantry. Challenger 2 students progress with their tank training and we also follow Yana, an Op INTERFLEX interpreter, as she travels north for a rare opportunity to see her fiancé as he begins a Commanders course on British soil before heading back to the frontlines.

Tell us a little about the 2014 coup d'état organized by the CIA, the massacre of civilians in Donbass by the pro-Nazi Azov Battalion, the persecution of citizens of Russian origin, the hunt for Ukrainians to prevent them from fleeing abroad by forcing them to go to the massacre, of your president put in power by the CIA and a Ukrainian oligarch in cahoots with the Americans who as soon as he was elected threw the opposition parties out of parliament like the perfect dictator that he is, of the Western journalists killed, including one of mine country, to try to hide the war crimes of Donbass for which he should be tried together with those of the Azov battalion. You are a bloody dictatorship that cannot point the finger at the Russians, you have done even worse than them against democracy and legality. And you are also grateful to the Americans and the English who use you as cannon fodder for their interests against Russia, you are really so stupid as not to understand that the Americans move only and solely for their own convenience and not at all for your safety, They are already delaying sending weapons because the people there too are against it. More weapons, less Ukrainians, it will be too late when you understand this thing, it was better to make peace at the beginning. They even deluded you that you could win, but it would never have been possible, the Russians have more population than you, they are the largest nuclear power in the world, do you really want to push them to the limit of using their true military potential? They would wipe you out in a single day like what happened with the Japanese during the Second World War, keep posting videos of drones with small victories when a single missile would be enough for the Russians to wipe you out. The problem is that because of the Americans (who are safely away) and your president who forcibly sends Ukrainian civilians to massacre, the radiation would also reach us in Europe, it would be a Chernobyl multiplied 100 times.

@@marklanahan7289 Russia, not least because the Finnish pipeline was definitely breached by them. It was destroyed by an anchor “accidentally released” by a Chinese vessel crossing the pipeline’s location. Two facts that you should know; 1) Anchors do not get “accidentally released” by the crew of vessels underway at normal economical steaming speed. To release an anchor requires a number of crew and the removal of more than one preventative device that is in position specifically to prevent “accidental release.” The reason is that “accidentally releasing” an anchor from a vessel that is underway at significant speed can endanger the vessel and its crew. 2) The Chinese crew of said vessel were removed and replaced with an all-Russian crew at its previous port of call. Russia’s purpose for disrupting fuel supplies to the EU zone was an attempt to use fuel poverty as a blackmail to discourage EU nations from providing assistance to Ukraine, with Europeans being heavily dependent upon Russian fuel imports and with the winter approaching. It didn’t work, the EU nations saw it for what it was and arranged for alternative fuel suppliers. Hope that helps.

It brings it home to you - in WW2 a new pilot would arrive on a squadron having done "12 hours on Spits" and having learnt to fly in a matter of a few months. In the 21st century it's going to be two years before they're taking off in an F16 "in anger." And that's the problem, they need aircraft and pilots now - this week - tomorrow even. Will there still be an independent Ukraine in 2 years? Don't question the will of proud Ukrainians but they need all the backing in terms of equipment and assets from the West, and that seems to have dropped off alarmingly in recent months despite declaring "we're in it for the long haul." Putin isn't giving up - he can't - he's reorganised Russia's economy into one on a war footing and has turned in earnest to replacing all his lost armour, tanks and munitions etc.

As a American Iraq veteran. I remember coming home from my first tour which was the first rotation over there. And at the Airport was veterans from Korea and Vietnam there to greet us and welcome us home. My Uncles are vets from Vietnam. My Grandfather was in the Navy during WW2. And my step dad was in Desert Storm in the Army. My family knows what war is. So to me seeing those guys show up I always felt like what we went through simply paled in comparison to what those guys must of seen. And now the Ukrainians are the new WW2 veterans of the world. They have seen things that haven't been seen since WW1 and WW2. The Ukrainians are now the guys we all must look to and talk to them about their experience and lessons learned. Because they are currently the greatest experts on fighting a modern day war. We in the West have been fighting goat shaggers in flip flops for the last 20 yrs. We know how to fight those guys. But we haven't fought face to face with an enemy that has jets and tanks in quite a long time. And now we have drones to worry about. Which honestly I would take fighting goat shaggers over worrying about drones any day.

I would hope, and I'm sure its that way, that when they return to Ukraine, that if they haven't already, they can incorporate the drone threat into their planning and maneuvers. Am so impressed with these Ukrainian pilots, having to not only upgrade to a very advanced fighter aircraft but have to be advancing their english verbal, vocabulary skills at the same time. That's gotta be brutal. They have to learn weather terms, armament terms etc way outside regular conversational english.

These guys are primary flight students? new to flying, never been in air combat? There are 3 stages, 1. Primary flight training in Prop driven planes, 2. Advance Flight Training using jet trainers. 3. the F-16 training 4. Assignment to a Combat Coded F-16 Squadron If you are already a MiG-29 or Su-27 pilot with combat experience the procedure is shorter. 1. English training if needed 2. F-16 conversion course (5 weeks to 3 months)
