The 1.30 apparently running backwards is due to the stroboscopic effect -caused by interaction of shaft speed and film frame speed. the same reason that wagon wheels can appear to be going backwards in cowboy films

Best I can tell it’s a 590e with mechanical governor it would’ve been a truck engine or an industrial engine off a genset it was maxxing out at 75hp

590E mark 2 ( mechanical governor pump) in a marine application is rated at 100hp at 2250rpm.

Dyno the Fords and Gardners we rebuild all the time so completely get there are different ratings. Approx 25% power diff thru the PTO compared to if it was flywheel hp. Same when a marine engine is tested with the transmission hanging off the back. The Ford factory turboed version of a 590E is a brilliant engine. Had them make any easy 120-150hp when we fit the now obsolete turbo with a modern unit. The 590 engines are a smoother, quieter and more torquey engine than its later and higher reving brother the Dorset/D-series.

Only ever seen the marine versions. Brilliant engine. Dont make a lot of boost (10psi max) Guys pull them out of a boat and literally scrap them to be replaced by a later model D-series/Dover Ford. Then find out that the replacement engine cant swing the prop the good old Trader used to swing even with more hp. Got one in one of our boats, shes been in there over 50 years now and never had the head off once. I pull the injectors every couple of years and go thru them, change oil in injector pump every year, upgrade liftpump to a twin diaphraghm one, service the engine and fitted a centrifugal oil filter and can leave that engine for up to a month, go down, touch the button and she starts first or second compression.

The Dover series are still made in Turkey under brand Otosan. Same as a Dover but different freshwater pump, crank driven oil pump and longer sump. Only ever seen 4 cyl Ebro engines. Still a lot of 4 and 6 cyl Trader 590 and 592 engines here. I buy them if they pop up mainly for the injector pumps etc and the blocks and marine exhaust manifolds. Only bad thing about a 590 is they eat the liners away directly opposite the valve camshaft lobes. They get bad cavitation. And liner o-rings get hard n leak. Apart from that they are luvly luvly engines.

75hp Peak pto hp at 1800rpm which is about right for what it’s putting out looked to be an industrial variant of the 590e Ford which was usually rated at 85hp on flywheel, but recommended the owner his exhaust needed to be wider as was restricting it shaking at full load might break manifold bolts down the line

In 1800 rpm you are right. But this engine have in the book at least 100 hp in the 2500 rpm. Of course high reps because no turbo. Why only 1800 rpm on the dyno?
