Ford Transit VANSPEED Capsule Install: Add 6" to Bed Length

Follow along as we share how we installed Vanspeed Shop’s capsules on our extended length Ford Transit. This is currently the best option to add 6" to overall width and fit a queen size widthwise bed into this van while maximizing the living space.
It is an intimidating task, but rest assured you CAN DO IT!

    I have been watching your video for some time and I finally decide to do want I should have for sometime " subscribe ". I finished my build a year ago with the bed sideways. I am 6'2" and even with building out the van as much as I could I barely fit and most of the time it not not very comfortable. If I remember correctly flare outs were very expensive at that time and I was hoping I would fit ok is the space. Well, last fall on a warm night we had the slider window open and I push out the screen with my feet. I am now contemplating retrofitting my van with flare outs. My van is a 2020 Hi roof EXT. From what been reading and from your video the Vanspeed flairs need some minor modification to fit EXT vans. I also notice you removed some material on the bottom left corner. Thanks so much for taking the time to film your work.

    I am 6'4" and really, REALLY appreciate this. Nobody else is showing how to build for us tall folk. Most people you see are 5'8" or shorter so of course they don't need to worry about this! Also - I am from Kamloops (no longer live there) so I appreciate the "hometown feel" of your videos. Keep it up!

    Thanks for your feedback, Matt. Transit with capsules is the best option for tall (over 6’2”ish) people currently in our opinion. We’re happy to hear you found it helpful!

    I contacted Vanspeed about a month and a half ago and posted to the TransitForumUSA to your post back in November. Vanspeed told me then that they were waiting for a person in Canada who was supposed to put out another video on the install on the extended Transit with custom fitting of their product. Note: They did not reveal who they were working with -I am making the assumption it might be you . I need updated information about the shaping of the Capsule to fit the Transit. This is important to me because trimming/shaving of the front facing edge of the Capsules will need to be done to match the wall shape since Vanspeed does not have a specific mold for the Transit body shape. Vanspeed indicated they were waiting for a instructional video to share with their customers like me -I called them back 2 weeks later and they said they still had no updates on the new video. Assuming you are working directly with Vanspeed to produce this video do you have any video, photos or a write up that you can share? Having an updated video would be helpful like the video you shared in this post. I am looking for is specific details on how much material and where specifically you have to remove it from the Capsule. I have a flapper wheel and a couple of different random orbital sanders and I am pretty confident I can figure it out but prefer additional learning from someone who has done it already. I am at the point in my build that I need to decide if Vanspeed is what I move forward with or use Flares. The timing is important because of lead time with shipping time and paint matching which would all likely take 4-6 weeks before I can install them. Tim do you have any updates? Any photos or upcoming video that you can share?

    We don't have a video in the works yet but plan to when we start our next EXT length Transit build. It actually is very simple to shave the top and bottom of the capsule down to make them fit the EXT length Transit. I prefer using a cordless hand planer, remove ~1/16" at a time from the top and/or bottom and test fit between passes. At the end I smooth it out and blend in the corners with an orbital sander - test fit one last time and then send it off for painting.

    So I got the capsules and there is a small rounded perimeter ridge/lip that is the edge of the capsule -is that what you mean by the top and the bottom? @@TimKatie

    They do not fit a 2023 model as there is not enough material left to get the inside edge to fit the 28 1/4” inside panel dimension on the front edge so there is not a big gap. I used my planer set to 1/32 and removed top then bottom side equally and they are simply formed too large for EL transit. Ironically the back fits pretty good and would barely require any trimming -the problem is with the front dimension.

    Which Awning windows did you go with? I am can't find one that the opening it the correct size (33"x10") that the slider requires. Looking at the Van Windows direct site.

    What made you go for the capsules instead of the bump-outs you had on your previous Transit? I am currently planning a Transit build and want to fit a sideways bed that's comfortable to sleep in (I am just a tiny bit under 6 foot tall). Any recommendation on which way to go?

  • @TimKatie

    @TimKatie

    11 ай бұрын

    The maximum sideways space you can have without capsules (or flares) in a transit is 75”, or maybe 75 1/2” at the widest point if you frame your bumpout well to really maximize the space. Tim is ~6’2” and had to sleep slightly angled and curled up on the bed with just the bump outs. We would recommend that if you’re around/over 6’ tall to go with capsules, but it depends if you like sleeping stretched out or if you’re okay with your feet and maybe head touching against the end walls. I hope that helps!

    Looks nice, but why did you need to install the capsules (often called FLAIRS)? What would be the length of your bed without them? Are you both that tall?

  • @TimKatie

    @TimKatie

    Жыл бұрын

    Maximum bed length without capsules is ~75” (we built 2 previous transits and shared a previous video showing how we framed the bed) and Tim is 6’2”, however the client that bought this van is 6’3” so a full queen length (80”) was a must for them. Flarespace Flares (which add ~3” total width) are a specific product and different from the Vanspeed Capsules.
