Historically speaking, the original launch of the Mustang in the 1960’s was a tremendous success, becoming one of the most popular and sold cars in the world. But do people remember it because it was an inexpensive coupe? Or do they remember it because of what it could do?
People can define the Mustang in different ways, but for us, the Ford Mustang isn't defined by the most sold variant of the car, it's defined by a man and his team, Carol Shelby and their GT350. The Mustang that was made into a race car for the street.
Decades later, that legacy continues to this day, you can drive an affordable car on the road, that feels like a proper performance car.
But the Mustang brand came close to fizzling out. Not long ago, the 90’s saw the introduction of the SN95 platform, a dedicated chassis that replaced the popular fox body, and despite the new style and improvements, the Mustang was in a bit of trouble, struggling to win back the fans.
When the SN95 body style arrived to replace the highly successful fox body, it was a dramatic shift in styling towards a sportier appearance. For many of us today this style was the Mustang we were introduced and wanted to own one day for ourselves.
But why was the new Mustang in hot water? In 1999 when the car got a bit of facelift and some impressive changes not just in styling, but more importantly performance, Ford claimed the cobra mustang was producing 320hp (doesn’t seem like it but that was a big number back then) and when journalists got their hands on it, they could swear it felt much slower.
In fact, a few journalists dyno tested the car and discovered the new mustang was considerably underpowered compared to what marketers said.
Consumers were frustrated, there was lawsuits, and the as a reaction Ford shut down production on the Mustang until they could get this mess sorted out.
This is where the legendary SVT division comes in. Ford’s Special Vehicle Team was tasked with revisiting the Mustang and improving it a number of ways, not just power.
With a limited budget and innovative mindset, SVT gave us the incredible 2000 Cobra R! A 385 hp straight up race car with a huge wing, side exhaust, massive hood bulge, side skirts, and with a naturally aspirated V8 (a 5.4L V8 borrowed and tuned from the Ford lightning)
This baby was the peak performance for the time, the gorgeous and powerful Mustang we wanted. The problem? They only made about 300 of them.
But SVT wasn’t done yet, keep in mind the Cobra R was practically a race car that you wouldn’t necessarily enjoy daily driving. Yes, the Ford Mustang means accessible power, but you also have to be able to live with it day to day.
Now it was time to introduce a Mustang with the same performance improvements, but in a car you would want to own and daily drive. The introduction of the new SVT Cobra, dubbed the TERMINATOR was hitting the nail of the head.

I never really liked the look of the SN95. When I was born and as I grew up, that melted cheese look was on everything, and I thought the Mustang was boring because of it. The 1999-2004 years look better, and the 2000 V6 I bought just a month ago for $400 is convincing me that they're better cars overall than they get credit for (despite the 24 year old garbage interior.) I think I'm developing a growing admiration for the SN95 generation as videos like this come out, and I might even say it's a solid #3 after the 1st gen and S197 respectively. I can thank the SN95 for saving the Mustang at least, so it wasn't cancelled in favor of the wildly popular Ford Probe.

I have a 2000 v6 as well as a 1996 cobra. The 3.8 is an incredibly fun car, but my cobra is in mint condition. I can’t tell you how many complements I get on it. Draws much more attention than the terminator in my opinion.

It is a really great car. Also good looking, with better center of gravity than later model. The engine has lower numerical rating, but it's actually just as powerful. Numbers can lie, and math is not an exact science. Number is the same as language.

The terminator is my dream car, well 1 of them. Every 80-90s kid has about 5 dream cars, and i don't exactly have deep enough pockets for an F40, a countach, etc... but i do own a terminator mustang. in college, in 2002-03 i settled for a used GT i could afford but stared at the cobra in the showroom on a weekly basis since it was near our work. It is practically factory condition with zero modifications right now. I'd like to keep it factory but i know that as things break, i may be tempted to "While it's getting this fixed, what about X"

@@WhyBuy I got one a few weeks ago, 12,800 miles. Factory condition, 1 owner garage kept. Found it at a consignment classic car dealership, in the color (black) and style (coupe) i used to stare at in the showroom. I probably paid about $5k more than expected (just because i got classic car warranty, and ofc good ol' state taxes wanting their $1500) but i've got my dream car in factory condition, clean history, title, etc. it's in such factory condition that it still has the factory tires/rubber on it still, which i plan to rectify this week. I absolutely love driving that car, it's everything i wanted and more. BTW, when i took it into Ford to the state inspection/oil change for registration, they had 3 GT40's being worked on beside my cobra. 2 modern ones, and 1 gorgeous red 05 GT with the white stripes down it. Imagine pulling in with a factory condition, 12k mile terminator and you arent even top 3 in the shop that day LOL. I'm kidding, they all raved about how much they loved my car

It is cheap they gave us a 430 hp mustang with capability of making 1000 wheel with a turbo setup or big blower all.for 35k on 2003 which would be like 55-60 today which is one hell of a barron considering it was smoking base vettes and even z06 that was 20k more could be taken down with 600 in mods. It ain't gonna have amazing interior but for its time it was good and much better than a basic gt.
