Ford Model T diff and driveshaft rebuild #4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

1914 Ford Model T. In this video the focus is on reassembly of the diff which includes correct thickness of new bronze thrust washers. It then progresses to final install of felt oil control seals (yikes) and outer grease seals. Before install in the car, the radius arms and fourth bearing are installed.

I avoided that type of inner seal as there have been accounts of the steel part of that seal grooving the axle shaft.

WOW - 77 km/hr in a Model T would be….pretty damned fast! My 1920 T seems to be happiest at around 60-65 km/hr and that feels like plenty fast enough.

I've got a Marks gearset: 3:1 ratio. I cruise at 55kph. Above 60 it's a little challenging of the courage.

Curious why you didn't use the modern type seals rather than the inner felts? I find those felts such a nightmare

Good question. On this job it came down to what was available in country as I was on a tight schedule. It can take a couple of weeks to get an order from Langs. Also, if I recall correctly, the fella I had on the phone recommended the original style (didn't have the modern ones) and had them in stock. I think there's a lot to be said for not filling the diff too full...
