A lot of it is the poor intercoolers auto makers put on the cars. Diesel fuel cools cylinder walls down as it's sprayed in the cylinder but gas doesn't. I have a focus st as a daily work car and the temps spike to 180-190 as the turbo spools up which kills engines, the fix is a 700$ intercooler that keeps intake temps at a reasonable 90-100. But auto makers don't want to pay triple for the part due to volume production issues.

I have a 2000 Durango and it has a magnum engine not a hemi. I love the thing. In the 14 years I’ve had it I’ve replaced everything except the engine and trans. I mean everything, rear differential, everything. Lots of back yard body work. I figure I’ve spent about $25,000.00 including the original price I paid. It seats seven and rides great. Divide that by 14 years, not bad. It’s not how much it’s worth, it’s how much I save by keeping it in repair. If the engine or transmission ever goes ill replace it, it’s my cheapest and reliable option.

Scotty, i get your bias about turbo engines.( I am also a mechanic btw) These cars can last just the same. As long as you know the failure points going in. You can easily get well over 200k miles out of them. Modding is where you run into problems. Even then as long as you tune it properly and dont skimp out on oil changes and keep the car from overheating. The issues are minimized and longevity is very attainable. Technology has came a long way since the early days. Alot of failures are due to poor maintenance and people running poor tunes with excessive boost pressure. My family runs Ford ecoboost 2.7 and 3.5 and both have well over 250k miles and are still going strong. And they are work trucks.

It is just a difference in business models. My explanation is not typical, but it is important to understand. 1. The Japanese language has no alphabet. The orignal Chinese characters and the characters in 20th century Katakana and Hiraga are not an alphabet. Think writing is difficult. So imagine a company with layers of management. Unlike the US where the orders and directions are top down, an idea is circulated among managers at the same level and when there is approval, the suggestion is kicked up to the next level. This results in incremental, but solid improvements in cars. There isn't going to be advertising like "all new for 2025", "fastest selling" or "revolutionary" as you see from Detroit. 2. Which car companies are going out, finding promoters selling "new techologies" and paying fortunes for the small "future of the industry" companies that don't pay off? The Detroit based car companies which decided to value advertising over reliaiblity, flash over quality. 3. There are a lot of Americans who buy vehicles based upon the monthly car payment and impressing the neighbors. With disruptions in the economy over the last few years, governmental subsidies for car makers too big to fail not on the table, and Detroit not living up to promises of improved quality, the Detroit based major car companies should be in trouble.

Ok, take some Ritalin, maybe a Dump Trucks worth, relax, and CALM DOWN. They are all still here. Keep em coming bud. Entertaining.

3.8 litre GM great engine till the bad plenum design with mandatory coolant change overheating EGR valve cooking coolant to jelly and blowing intake gaskets when plenum warped sending massive amounts of coolant into heads hydro- locking the engine. Yeah. That was bad. Really bad. I repaired my ‘98 Bonneville. It was a mess inside with jelly anti freeze everywhere. Because I had a 98 with over 100,000 mile, not covered in recall. No more GM products after that.

There's no way to stop that data collection; so I won't ever be getting a new car. My 2012 doesn't tell the manufacturer (or the gov't) anything about my car or my driving, so I reckon I'll just keep it & repair as necessary. *NO SPYWARE*

This car has been nothing but trouble, there’s been two recalls which we had serviced and yesterday the motor went out. I can only get $1000 to trade it in and we still $8000 so the only option is to go back to Ford and get a new car because we’re screwed in equity. We need advice on what to do next.
