That is definitely the crankshaft pully. Done mine it's a common fault on peugeot hdi also on the 2.0hdi . There is a rubber inside them that helps with the vibration. You can get the solid ones they are about 20 quid well they were when I replaced mine.!!!

Sometimes this noise can be clutch plate slipping. It stops when you depress the clutch. But in your case fly wheel

I had the same noise! when the engine gets warmer the sound it's getting worse. Solved: Changed the crankshaft pulley wheel. :D

Hi also the box on top of engine is a resonator box I'm smiling it's a type of intercooler for the 1.4hdi and tdci..as the turbo connect to it like a intercooler. .

Yes when the engine gets warmer the noise does get louder cause the pully get hotter and make s the knocking worse I'd defo.change the pully they only get worse the longer you leave it !!!

Hey man, thanks for the input. However, weird thing happened. It stopped making that weird noise out of nowhere. I took it to a mechanic I know and he spoke about changing a lot of stuff on the engine, but I didn't do anything, and the noise eventually disappear on it's own, and I never took it to the mechanic again to replace the parts he spoke about. I always put some high quality fuel, which makes me believe that the former owner was just using cheap fuel instead. Of course I can be, and probably am, 200% wrong but the sound is gone. In fact, as the car got warmer, the sound disappeared back then, instead of getting louder :\

Have no idea what it was, but apparently it got fixed on its own. Yeah, all I did was putting good quality fuel. I bought the car in September, and a week later I did a overall maintenance that included every filter, and liquid changes, oil of course included. This sound only came a few months later.

That supposedly has some sort of valve. I don't recall what it does exactly. I could be wrong too.

Its engine knocking. TDCi’s are known to have dodgy diesel intake and the pistons start knocking about.

Hey. Yes it did disappear on it's own. The former owner used to put on low quality diesel and I began to put on high quality diesel and it disappeared after a couple of weeks and as never come back again.

Maybe, I had no clue to be fair. That once it warmed up that sound just stopped. 6 years after, I still have the car and that noise is completely gone without me actually doing nothing but to fuel it with proper good diesel and, of course, doing a yearly maintenance.

What was the problem causing the engine to run like that?

Hello. I took the car to a couple of mechanics and none could figure what the problem was. Every was like "we can replace this, that, and also that part, so the noise goes away, but... it's a gamble, I don't know what is causing it". So, after 6 months of fueling with high quality diesel, the noise disappeared, and the car is working just fine and stable. I'm guessing the previous owner just fueled it with crappy fuel and somehow the tubes got some sort of "rubbish" that cleaned itself after using hight quality diesel. I cannot find any other reason possible, as well as the mechanics.

I just bought same car and have smoke from back of engine when it's warm ? It's odd as car is not losing oil or coolant but does judder sometimes?

I thought about that too, just I took it to my mechanic at that time and he told me everything was ok and working just fine. In fact, better than most than in many cars with that age and with that mileage.
