Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute 2.3L Rod Bearing Failure, Engine Knocking Loud!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is just a quickie of a really roughed up #2 rod bearing that was loud as all hell. Notice the step around the edge of the crankshaft journal. And yes I know this is badged as a Mazda, but it is a Ford engine in a Ford body. Badges are meaningless to me, I pretty much see only the machine underneath.

I know this is old, but hopefully you see this since I'm thinking about buying one of these with an engine issue. I'll probably end up just swapping it out. For the oil pan, was it straight forward in removing it?

Yes, pulling the pan is straightforward on this. There still are the usual techniques needed to remove a pan that is firmly in place with an RTV/silicone gasket. I know you didn't ask, but don't buy one of these or any other domestic economy car. Especially something of this age/price range. Unless you love everything about the way it drives, how it feels, how the HVAC works, how it looks, avoid it. Go for something Honda/Toyota unless you have some irrational reason not to do so.

@@Fopeano thanks for the oil pan info. Only reason I'm considering buying one is because I'd have about 1500 into it when finished and its a hybrid. Need something cheap, suv or taller car, and good mpgs. I will have a backup vehicle.

@@Ka_Gg You need something cheap but you want a hybrid with an engine issue? This is all wrong! You are expecting a 40 year old hooker to have no medical issues. Move on...

@@Fopeano where did I ever say no issues? I even mentioned buying one with an engine issue. I fully expect issues. I already have a 20 year old hybrid. Obviously there will be issues with any older car. I'm fine with working on them.

+Kevin Kelly This video has nothing to do with replacing bearings, only shows the failure and knocking like the title says. The customer had already damaged the crankshaft beyond the point of being able to replace the bearings when this car came in. This is not a 'how-to' video, but rather a 'laugh at the broken car' video. Because of the crankshaft damage and the expense of repairing the damage, a used engine was installed.

Yeah, you're probably right. The customer was really mad about the used engine costing less than half the money of repairing the existing engine you see in this video. Our business has been suffering lately because of our reputation for offering the customer multiple repair options that cater to their needs and budget. I talked to my boss and showed him your comment, and I'm pleased to say that we'd like to bring you on as a service adviser! We feel that someone with your obvious expertise would probably make at least $130k per year, so let me know if you're interested.

I suppose I'll explain why everything you have said is without merit. Your statements are assumptions based on limited knowledge of the situation. I wouldn't be surprised if you've hindered yourself in real life more than once by going off half cocked with an attitude like that. First off, I had nothing to do with this job. The senior tech who works next to me did what you see with no prompting from myself. I simply picked up the camera and filmed it because it was happening. You might notice that the shots don't begin and end at ideal moments, as is the case when getting work done is the priority over making videos. Just to be clear, I had no responsibility for or control over the course of this repair. That is fully your assumption. You hear in the video where the adviser says that the noise is "definitely his #1 concern now". That is in reference to the fact that this rod bearing problem was already known and diagnosed a month prior to when this video was shot. It was the customer's choice not to repair the problem when it could have been a bearing job. It was explained to the customer that it would only get worse and the repair more costly, and it was his choice to continue driving the car the point that he called terrified by how loud the engine had become.

The only wrong I see here is in the video description. It's a Mazda engine because it is a engine designed by Mazda not Ford. I have a 2005 Ford Escape/Maverick and it has a 2.3l Mazda engine. Can you tell me what kind of rod bearing do I have? is it triple metal? as in white metal, bronze and steel, or is it only white metal and steel?

I've haven't seen it, but I don't see Fords more than once a day. Somebody working in a Ford dealer, seeing 50 or 100 a day coming through the shop would be the ideal person to ask.

About $1500 in labor plus the used motor, fliuds, belts, fixing up the used motor. That cost can vary quite a bit, but it could be expected to be another $1500 for parts.
