That's the kit I bought (on your recommendation),and the Melling oil pump, and I have absolutely no regrets. It was actually way,way cheaper by far then buying it locally (Canadian eh),just had to take a bit of a drive over the bridge and pick it up at the UPS store.

Yes,the kit he recommends came with everything for the timing (sprockets, guides, tensionors, chains, phazers, front cover seals and crank seal),but while you're in their anyways do the oil pump,it's cheap insurance (yes I used the Melling),if you do it you'll need to get the valve cover gaskets,a tube of sealant, some blue lock-tite,and new crank/harmonic bolt separate (if you live in Canada the crank bolt price alone will make you faint,so order it from the States). I also did the VCT solenoids since the valve covers were off making them easily accessible. You accidentally typed 5.3 instead of 5.4 by the way. No issues at all, truck now runs amazing. I'll have to look through my books to see what the mileage (kilometers for me) was when we did it and what it is now.

FordTechMakuloco what do you think about Melling components (phasers)? I know you like their HV oil pumps. Any recommendations for affordable hand held scan tools that will show cam/phaser timing? I have a Bosch 1150, and it won't show that.

I just did this to my truck. Want to say thanks!!! I followed your 4 part series, and took notes, listend it to it on my way work just to stay on top of it. My F250 5.4 has 300,000 miles, I bought it with 100,000, and I have never done the timing at all. The heads we're just light yellowish brownish, kinda like a popcorn kernel. I have always used Mobil one synthetic 5-20, changed around 5000 miles,, sometimes even at 7500 a couple of times. Whoever decides to do this,, buy exactly what he tells you to buy in the list, and do exactly what he tells you do. My truck fired up, no problems, and went from 12.8 mpg to 14,, it's a heavy truck, has a service body. Thanks again Brian!!

Now, just like the Ford 6.0 diesels I have learned more than I wanted to know about 3v engines hahaha I worked for Ford dealer in the 90's and worked on plenty of 2v's & 7.3's..............Did a 5.4 3v couple weeks ago, that's how i found your channel Which was a life saver to say the least ! 5.4 had Dorman's but I found whoever installed them didn't torque them properly, Passengers phaser was moving 1/8th of an inch or more, due to sheared off pin in back and it wedged itself between then inside flat and end of the cam !! Luckily, I got away with only buying the cam gear lock tool and wedgie......... Now I just finished a 4.6 3v.....Got it together, it ran "ok" but kept tossing out DTC's P0012, P0022, bank 2 retarded... Well, tear it down again (I had a zipper on that nice front modular radiator /condensor assembly!) Eyeballing, the 6 o'clock on crank shaft was my error, so I bought the crank tool and got it all back together and running in 3 hours, Runs like a top ! back to full on power no codes everything functions to spec's now can send it back to the used car dealer who brought it to us... And I have convinced the boss to NOT Buy crappy A/M parts! He don't like to work for free, neither do I ! which is what happens when you use A/M parts!.............Hell, @ Ford I went thru 3 T-stats once right off the shelf to get a good 1 that worked ! So sometimes even genuine parts can fail right off the shelf Am sure I will be watching more of your video library as needed.....Like how in depth and direct your tell it in plain english lol

Hello, Excellent videos. I do like to watch you work on these trucks, I know you are a pro. I have to disagree on some points, I 100% agree we should not use china made knock offs, however, if Mortorcraft was any good, we would not have these problems on low mileage vehicles. I believe we need to find a better quality after market part since Motrocraft is the reason why we doing this so often.

I feel like the fact that pretty much all aftermarket timing parts for these engines are junk is a testament to the overall poor design of this engine (or at least its valvetrain). Obviously buying the cheapest replacement parts for any engine will yield poor results, but even the timing sets from Cloyes or a few other decent brands seem to fail in this engine. With many other types of engines, generally good real brand aftermarket parts (not eBay junk) will be cheaper AND of equal or sometimes higher quality than the OE parts, which leads me to believe that the inherent design of those other engines is just better. I could be wildly wrong, but that's just been my experience over the years. I currently have a 2007 F250 with the 5.4 and your videos have provided ample help for me throughout the process of replacing all of the timing components! Thank you so much!

2004 f150 cam phasors rattling like crazy. Started at 85,000 miles. It got so noisy I was embarresed to drive it. In Phoenix, not one independent garage would change them. Finally had to shop around ford dealers and found a Lincoln dealer who would do it. After some serious negotiations, I let them fix it for $1200 including Ford Phasors. It came back very quiet and ran noticeably smoother and better. Had to change some pulleys and the AC Comp. but that was easy. At 160,000 miles, the engine sound like new. And after several thousand miles, it is still quiet and smooth. Happy!!!!

I had a '98 F150 and it ran great w/ 200,000 miles until we sold it. Very reliable truck. We then bought a 2005 F150 and still own it, and going strong with 303,000 miles and never had a major repair at all. At 290,000 miles the starter had to be replaced, but everything else is original like the alternator, muffler, cat, converter, and tailpipe are original, and timing chain original. Electric window buttons on armrest were replaced. Yes, the cam phase sensor is ticking, but I never replaced it. Still runs great; a solid vehicle with great pickup and speed. I will use it until 350,000 then decide what to do next. I always use Royal Purple fully synthetic oil with a K & N filter. The cam phase sensor isn't throwing codes, so I do nothing.

I have a 2008 Expedition with the 5.4 3V. I bought an OEM kit from that one company you don't like that sells the aftermarket kits. I replaced both phasers, VCTs, chains, tensioners, guides, crank sprocket, Water Pump and oil pump with the Melling 360 OH. Once installed, which I did following your videos and took pictures so I knew it was all correct, bank 1 was sketchy. 3 weeks of troubleshooting and it turned out to be a bad phaser that was supposed to be a ford part. I replaced it with one from the dealer and no problems. Now a few thousand miles later Bank 2 seems to be giving a problem. I borrowed an analyzer and have a short video but not sure how to upload. It shows a small difference between bank 1 and bank 2. The engine will shake and then stop running when brought to a slowdown or stop intermittently, seems I never have the scanner hooked up when it happens. Thinking I should just replace it, why would it go bad if it's supposed to be OEM. Wish I could upload the video

I just installed the phasers, chains, and roller followers and am turning the engine over by hand to make sure there is no contact. I am hearing and seeing this ticking noise/behavior that you showed in the video above, that the cheap phasers can make. Is there something wrong with my new Ford phasers? Question and thanks for the info. I have a '97 Expedition which started making those knocking noises yesterday. It did stop making the noises after the engine sat for a few hours. Is it recommended that I not start the motor up, or even drive it that way? Thank you in advance.

I had the dealership do a timing job on my truck about a year and a half ago and I noticed that the tensioners have already gone out as they used the OEM plastic ones, is it worth breaking into it myself and going ahead and replacing some parts with melling parts such as tensioners and the ms360hv oil pump as well as replacing the lifters and rocker arms with high quality upgraded ones that have another oil port for better lubrication

What do you think of phaser lock out kits? With tune and all

A few years ago you couldn't get a Ford phaser across the country with back orders expected to be 6 months behind. So I had to go with the Dorman. And of course they are going bad with only a few thousand miles on them. The Expy was just a vacation/pull the trailer vehicle, not driven much. So it took some time passing for them to fail. If only Ford had designed them correctly in the first place, or not let it go on for so many years, we wouldn't be dealing with this.

Great videos! I did a full timing job on my 5.4l 3v following your videos also purchased all of the Ford parts from your links and also installed the melling M360HV . When I started the engine it runs and sounds great but after about 10 miles, when I come to a stop, it idles rough and sometimes stalls. check engine light comes on. Codes are P1000 and P0605 I'm not sure what to do now. A mechanic said the engine is no good without looking at it. just based on the codes. What would you recommend?

I had a customer bring in his 5.4 running on 4 cylinders found that the Dorman phaser failed . The locking pin and all the vanes broke up causing the cam to not turn while the timing chain just spun only the sprocket bending a few intake valves.

My argument is always " if OEM is so good why did it fail?" however because I do my own repairs and save on labor I never cheap out on parts. After market is ok for cosmetic stuff, but engine and ignition components always OEM.

Can you reccomend a kit for a 4.6 3v 2010 mustang? I want to make sure I get everything I need. Mines knocking once warm however it seems to knock past 1200rpm maybe to like 1600 after that I cant tell. However I'm not running around with a knocking motor even if it was non problematic.

How do feel about installing the phaser locks on these 5.4 L 3 valve engines ? They claim It will eliminate the problem. A kit has all needed and a programmable gadget to plug in that does an auto load. 2014 Expedition EL XLT

Can there be any other things that would cause those exact codes to pop up. I have a 2006 ford f150 that's has been running rough since I bought it. I've been chasing codes replacing everything under the sun even the camshaft sensors. Now I'm getting those four codes an not sure if I need to change those phasers out or do a whole timing kit or if something else could be causing the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a stupid question, but here it goes. My expedition has 178000 miles on it. At cold start it has a rumble type sound for just about a second. I believe it is a tensioner that leaked down. Do the chains on these ever fail ? can I just replace the tensioners on this?
