Ford 2000 Tractor Steering Shaft Seal Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Ford 2000 Tractor was leaking oil from the steering column. This indicates the upper seal in the power steering unit was bad. Time to replace.

    Yeah that bushing that you said you didn't know where it came out of, it does come out of the top. But you're helping me along with the lower part. They broke cast piece underneath the power steering control unit it cracked it so I have to replace it

    Thanks for the video and I know it’s about five years too late but I can confirm that bushing does belong at the top of the steering column. 😊

    The bushing does go in that rubber piece, and it goes in the top of the steering column. There is also a felt dust seal that goes on between the shaft and steering wheel. You can find all of the parts at Yesterdays Tractors. I'm not affiliated with them, but have gotten several parts from them and they seem to be pretty good folks. The difference between the cost of the seal and o-ring versus the sleeve kit (which includes the seal and o-ring) is about $42, so I would definitely suggest taking it apart to see what you need before ordering the parts. At least that's my plan. Ok, off to go take it apart and see what I need.

    I am in the process of buying a 4000 Ford and the owner just had the power steering valve rebuilt and new seals put in it. I know the man, a former neighbor, and he does very good work. He did say that it was a much harder job than he expected. I have never used it, but couldn't you have used a "speedy sleeve" on that shaft? I know they had to use it on both ends of my old John Deere transmission shaft where the bearings had eaten the shaft up.

    Correct name for it is Speedi Sleeve. A Speedi Sleeve kit is available through most of the vintage tractor suppliers. Comes with instructions, the sleeve, installation tube, new seal and new O ring for the column. Clean up the old seal surface, put on some non-hardening sealant (Permatex Aviation Gasket Maker works great - the brown stuff) and install the sleeve to just below the bit where the sector shaft swells to begin the seal surface. Afterwards, remove the installation flange on the sleeve and you're ready to put the column on. Turned out the new seal was the same dimensions as the original part, btw. I highly recommend this kit.

    I have ford 2600 , loses power steering fluid slowly. Can't see any cylinder or pump leak. Is there a way fluid can leak from low end of steering column and end up in transmission case. Engine oil level stays good , I didn't know if fluid can leak from pump into engine. Anyone had this issue with they're ford?

  • @mjmcomputers

    @mjmcomputers

    I’m not sure. I’d think it would be more likely to leak from pump to engine than from steering column to transmission.

    @@mjmcomputers thanks for reply about fantom powersteer leak. Don't have the common upper steering shaft seepage that I've seen on KZread videos. Only use tractor intermittently an don't find stains below tractor. Will have to study some steering box diagrams a little more. Is it possible the steering shaft lower seal, if there's one, is leaking and allowing fluid the to enter the steering arm gear area. Thanks for thoughts. I've got reasonable mechanical skills but haven't had to get to deep into tractor repairs. Around 1980 tractor with about 2800 hrs.

    @@mjmcomputers I loosened the clamp up but didn't realize it was grooved on the shaft for the bolt to go through. After I took the whole bolt off, came right out. • @mlinnell8

    @@chrismiles992 Chris, there is second lower seal on the steering shaft below the valve body. When this lower seal goes bad fluid will leak out the breather valve on the back of the steering block. If fluid leaks out the top of the steering column it indicates the upper seal is bad. Only the top seal was replaced in the video. Based on your description, it sounds like your lower seal is bad.
