I haven’t finished the video yet but I just wanted to thank you! I’d watched some of your videos and went skating a month and a half ago, but i wasn’t really thinking about them while I was skating, I got too confident in the inlines and played the game where you switch directions at the whistle blow, but I didn’t know how to switch directions, I ended up slipping on some rocky floor, fell back and broke my elbow 😬 since then I bought my own pair of quad skates, as well as knee pads, wrist guards, a helmet and elbow pads and watched your videos over and over so I would remember them when I was actually skating. I went to a rink for an hour 2 days ago, my first time back at a rink since breaking my elbow, and just practiced going up and down along the wall. I was nervous as all hell but I didn’t fall and was getting the hang of just moving again. Today I went to a rink for 2 hours and this time, boy I had fun! I LOVE SCISSORS! down with the butt up with the gut, scissors seriously helped when I was feeling not so confident or times I didn’t have a wall nearby to rely on. And as I turned corners I thought, head turns shoulder turns hip turns foot, then I realised one foot wasn’t turning because I needed to use my outer edge, I also got off the floor to adjust my trucks several times until the turning was easier, then it was too loose so I tightened them a bit and got them pretty good by the end. When I was doing scissors I even had some success at bringing one foot in front of the other (I think you call it cruising?) and I realised I wasn’t as good at putting the other foot in front and thought I CANT HAVE A BAD FOOT OR DIRECTION! I stopped skating 10 minutes before the session ended because I could feel one foot starting to cramp a bit (I had work before I went skating) and they played that direction switch game again and I knew I wasn’t ready for it. Happy to say I didn’t lose my balance and didn’t fall over all session! Cant wait to go to the rink and practice specific things. All of this success is thanks to your videos! Although I still need to change my cushions to change my life 🤔 THANK YOU! 🖤

I have broken both legs, ribs, and an elbow over the years. I healed up every time and got back on my skates. What can I say? I enjoy skating. So, I hope that you don't break as many bones as me. But, if you do, heal up and get back on them. All of my friends that used to skate together, now are saying that they are too old. Being in our mid 60's or myself in my 70's they tell me that their joints ache too much. I tell them, hey did they stop making ibuprofen? Get them skates out of the attic and dust em off! Let's roll!! We ain't gonna let them young whipper snappers have all the fun, are we?! Let's Roll!!

@@jimbobaggans1564 Ouch!! all from skating? Lucky I've never broken anything over the years but I can tell the falls are starting to hurt a lot more and do a lot more damage. I've been thinking about some wrist guards as they tend to hurt a lot more when i get up from a fall. Do you pad up at all Jimbo?

I recommend learning backwards skating, just push off the wall, hard with both hands and try keeping calm and balanced getting use to the feeling, then push off the wall and practice scissors then practice crossing your legs and practice turning your head straight to navigate , and when you finally start doing it subconsciously without thinking, then practice jumping forwards and landing backwards at low speeds then higher speeds soon you'll become amazing very fast, and start groving it's not hard, you need little genuine practice

You know what, as far as someone thinking they can not get it in 3 or 4 attempts, that is what lots of dance studios, university dance programs and fitness magazines were teaching. Especially in the late 80's they started coming out with that, like do not work for anything. I taught in dance studios for owners who told students it was how they were made if they could do splits or not. The ones i taught all had great splits and backbends, I showed them they could work for it. and the same thing with skating, lots of women came told me they bought a pair of skates because they saw me, and they fell on them, or cannot stand up and skate unless they hold on to something. , I tell them when learning new things on my skates, i hold on to something too..

I am still recovering from hurting my knee (again), but I got up on my skates and was turning and skating. My daughter was like, you're going to fall. I was like nope not me. Even if I do, I know how to do it safely and up, up, up thanks to your video on how to fall. So it is all good. How could you not smile from ear to ear when skating? That's what I always say. Before I bought my new wheels it had been 33 years since being on skates. I used to skate EVERYWHERE and was pretty much an expert skater. I loved it. Well, I am back to it again and not as good as I used to be but that will come. Thanks for the awesome videos. I love ya!!

Hi Debbie, I have been watching many of your videos and finally found this one. Thank you very much for putting these five skills together into one understandable flow. I am 72 years old and only knew how to skate forwards from when I was a kid. My bucket list included learning to skate backwards so I bought some skates just over a year ago and started watching you. My big problem is our only rink (Springfield, Missouri) is so crowded it makes it hard to avoid running into others. I bought some outdoor wheels and will try that once the weather cooperates. Thank you so much for your work.

I need a big space like a skating rink and your videos playing on a big screen while i follow. I have to break it down even more than that, like take one thing, and then like make into a fraction, Like I was watching one of your tutorials and I looked at your foot and notice what position it is in at what time. I work on that. then I take the next teeny weeny thing and say ok where is my foot supposed to be and when. Thanks so much for this.

No need to stop. Just get some pads! The kids may look at you funny, but who cares? If your local rink is wood, you don't need super fancy/super expensive pads, just ones that fit. I found a complete set on Amazon for less than $20 - knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist braces. Get a pair of Bum Savers, too...if you feel the need. Those are a bit more pricey, but if it makes you feel more comfortable/confident, save up for them if you have to. They're around $60-$80 depending on which style you get. Anyway, they protect the butt, hip, and thighs for "all around" coverage. Made more for derby and outdoor use, they do hold up pretty well, so the investment is worth it.

I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. My dad(73, he’s a very young 73) and I(35) have gotten back into wanting to skate again after 22 years. We used to go to a rink nearby all of the time and we were very good at it back then. Around that time, our local rink was becoming an area that had a lot of violence, and it just wasn’t the family friendly place that it used to be so we stopped going. When we went to a fairly new rink in a different direction a few weeks ago, we put on the skates and it felt so awkward..it took us forever to even get to the rink and when we finally did, we went around only once (there were a lot of kids darting everywhere and I’m now blind on the left side of both eyes so I can’t always see when they’re coming). After that time, I found your videos and when we went today, I felt a whoooole lot more comfortable. More like I used to feel several years, inches, and pounds ago 😂. The only think is that after maybe 50 feet or so, my shins start to kill me and I have to stop, rest, then go again, and same thing every 50 feet. Not sure if it’s that I need to work on my skating muscles again or what but I’m just going to keep practicing and see if it improves. If I wasn’t on the opposite side of the country, we would definitely be going to your rink, but as for now, I really do appreciate your videos :) Thank you!

Welcome back! Shin pain is very common. Are you wearing skates with a heel? You will tend to have less pain with a heel'd skate. Take it easy on your body and mind as you get back into this great sport.

I look forward to more combinations like these to smooth me out and help me to develop my own style.

Dirty Deb- Love this advice! You really hit the nail on the head with this video. Its cool too because you can learn what moves kinda go together and make it your own over time. Ive been working on a backwards step (while skating forwards) to a turn around to a rolling 360. its alot of fun to do and ive crashed a few times now. Thinking about wrist guards moving forward- they dont take the falls as well as they used to. :) Keep the vids coming !!

I love love love your videos, I wish soooo much that I lived near your skating rink so I could go there regularly, we don't have a single proper skating rink on my island far less for anywhere that I could go to for lessons, so I thank you so much for your videos, my only issue is because there is no other choice but to skate outdoors, debris always make me super nervous, but a little at a time I will eventually get it thanks to you.
