Okay but to be fair to Twitch chat at the beginning, Sombra and Pharah are two heroes you really don't hear walking around much. 90% of the time, Pharah is gonna be in the air or hiding on roof slopes, and Sombra is invisible and silent unless she's actively hacking/shooting you.

I have subtitles turned on for my game and they’ve 100% helped me figure out enemy positioning before! They tend to pick up on stuff a little farther out than my hearing range. So for example, the subtitles will note a voice line an enemy is spamming in spawn I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to make out, and I can instantly recognize they have a certain hero. I know it’s not relevant to footsteps, but it subtitles things like “Reinhardt: (Hammer Swing)” / “Zen: (Volley Charging)” / “Junkrat: (Trap placed)” and can be a really good way to pick up on easily missed sound keys you might not be great at sorting through ^_^

Yup! And that’s by design. The game even gives you an occasional tip saying “more dangerous the enemy the louder they are”. So Widow being dummy loud or tracer or junkrat is understandable because it’s helpful for a skilled listener to know they are coming. Especially since if you are skilled enough to know who is coming you THEY are also skilled enough to punish you really bad for not paying attention. Though I do respect people wanting to figure out ways to be more sneaky! I just thought this game design is really neat. As a support main (aka the player who is the first victim to a flanker lol) hearing who’s about to attempt to assassinate me can help me attempt to survive. While I’m not that good at actually using the information I gained because ngl I’m trash- being able to warn my teammates a little BEFORE my death about the flanker and not right after I die can make a difference. One day I’ll be skilled enough to fight the flankers… one day…

The loud footsteps is part of the "nerf" of Widowmaker. If she was silent AND could one shot, that would be fucked up. It's similar to why other games have the visual glint on sniper Scopes. Overwatch doesn't have that, so sound it required instead.

I'm gonna add a tip for healing: when a teammate out of your sight gets hurt, they make an specific sound. It depends if they get critical health, because it sounds more... Critical xD Listening to it helps so much because u can save lives if u react quickly to the sound. It’s easier to tell whose footsteps you’re hearing in game when you have a visual of the enemy hero choices

Make sure you have music down to zero in settings so in a match you can actually hear the footsteps

Yet another reminder from the universe to get a pair of headphones already 😂 so many times I can get caught out just by not hearing some things. I just keep delaying spending money on stuff because heck, who enjoys throwing money away right? Lol

Overwatch 1 direction and footstep audio I feel like was better. I can still tell whose footsteps I hear though.

To be fair to chat... in game, you know what the opposing team is playing, so it's much easier for you to tell who is who

somehow it’s a lot easier to guess whose footsteps it is in-game. Maybe because you know what 3 possibilities it could be instead of how many heroes ow has rn

Just knowing every single footstep is pointlessly excessive, it should be combined with other information like the scoreboard and visual confirmation. For audio confirmation, heavier footsteps usually mean tank, lighter usually means dps, supports have a rather unique footstep for each support except kiriko who sounds a lot like a dps and all footsteps are usually accompanied by some noise from abilities or even the weapon theyre holding (ahem roadhog, fkn loud bastard). The most important detail about sound is the direction, combine that with whatever you can see and you can have perfect visualization of the battlefield and can aproximate everyone's location. And not just footsteps but any minor audio cue. That's the reason Ive been called a hacker so many times, invisible sombra makes so much noise when you actually start listening.. sneaking enemies too, really..
