The video should be called "mL7 slowly discovering that most of what he knew about footsteps was a myth all along"
Okay but to be fair to Twitch chat at the beginning, Sombra and Pharah are two heroes you really don't hear walking around much. 90% of the time, Pharah is gonna be in the air or hiding on roof slopes, and Sombra is invisible and silent unless she's actively hacking/shooting you.

Ironically, this season, ground Pharah and uncloaked Sombra are extremely powerful in bronze lol you just supplement your tanks damage and completely roll if they position as per their hero correctly

@@TamWam_ Imagine sleeping a reaper right beside a hanzo teammate, you spam ping that sleeping reaper for a free headshot but you get ignored.
The first few are rare to hear. Doomfist doesn't tend to walk around so much as fling himself in mid-combat. Pharah flies. Sombra is inaudible when stealthed.
I have subtitles turned on for my game and they’ve 100% helped me figure out enemy positioning before! They tend to pick up on stuff a little farther out than my hearing range. So for example, the subtitles will note a voice line an enemy is spamming in spawn I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to make out, and I can instantly recognize they have a certain hero. I know it’s not relevant to footsteps, but it subtitles things like “Reinhardt: (Hammer Swing)” / “Zen: (Volley Charging)” / “Junkrat: (Trap placed)” and can be a really good way to pick up on easily missed sound keys you might not be great at sorting through ^_^

@@sweethistortea I find that that's very much the experience most people find in real life too. Although some people can find it very annoying after some time, it can also depend on the heels too. ML7: “you need to hear the footsteps” The entire Deaf and Hard of Hearing players: 💀
I often hear Reaper and Cass trying to flank and ping the hell out of where i hear them. They have the loudest footsteps ever. They usually panic ult when they see one of my teammates and then they have nothing for when they rest of the team comes around the corner to get them.

Reaper has voicelines about how loud his boots are even.
As a newbie in this game and coming from shooter games like valorant and csgo - i was confused for how people ignore audio information in this game. Great tips! Wish there was sample of widowmaker and how to camouflage it, since she is one of the noisiest dps in the game imo.

Yup! And that’s by design. The game even gives you an occasional tip saying “more dangerous the enemy the louder they are”. So Widow being dummy loud or tracer or junkrat is understandable because it’s helpful for a skilled listener to know they are coming. Especially since if you are skilled enough to know who is coming you THEY are also skilled enough to punish you really bad for not paying attention. Though I do respect people wanting to figure out ways to be more sneaky! I just thought this game design is really neat. As a support main (aka the player who is the first victim to a flanker lol) hearing who’s about to attempt to assassinate me can help me attempt to survive. While I’m not that good at actually using the information I gained because ngl I’m trash- being able to warn my teammates a little BEFORE my death about the flanker and not right after I die can make a difference. One day I’ll be skilled enough to fight the flankers… one day…
@rayraythebrew2863

The loud footsteps is part of the "nerf" of Widowmaker. If she was silent AND could one shot, that would be fucked up. It's similar to why other games have the visual glint on sniper Scopes. Overwatch doesn't have that, so sound it required instead.
@0Milena_aneliM0

It's because the game is more dynamic so most of the time you won't have time to mask your footsteps. But indeed sometimes I'm going with my team I hear footsteps and they go right through it in my head im going "man I'm a healer pls get your dmg butt here"
The amount of times I've pointed out a flanker to my team because I heard their footsteps is mind-boggling (especially cause no one else seems to take care). Not that it would help in my elo cause normally one gives a damn about what your supports say but hey, good habit is a good habit

I always main support in almost all the games I play, love how that happens everywhere :'p
5:00 I can't understand why Echo is so loud. Pharah's rocket boosters are nearly silent when she uses them. But Echo's normal walking has that loud ass humming, not to mention when she flies.
I actually remember the time when in old Overwatch you could see enemy team during hero select, because back then the background was a live version of the map that you play on. Learned since then to sit on a hero select on attack to see enemy team comp.
I'm gonna add a tip for healing: when a teammate out of your sight gets hurt, they make an specific sound. It depends if they get critical health, because it sounds more... Critical xD Listening to it helps so much because u can save lives if u react quickly to the sound. (Very often, when I play support, I don't get healed by the other support because they don't react to the sound)

This!!! So important and more helpful than pinging imo! When I hear ana say “help me!” How am I supposed to not turn around. I always feel bad lol
As a widowmaker main, I have Genji's footsteps MEMORIZED.
Yes! I've don't this for years with my tournament team, winning us early fights more often than not!
Yep, u are right. I'm used to most dangerous heroes footsteps. Specially the ones that can onshot (Hanzo, Widow) or the ones that surprise can make more difference (like Reaper, Rein or Junkrat). This last one is really useful due encountering them in a corner by surprise can literally kill you in seconds. And yeah, I'm a sup main
THIS IS THE MOST FRUSTRATING THING IN OVERWATCH. I'm in mid-game and my teammates can't hear the Reaper above us about to Blossom and take us all out. Dude you learn so much by listening. GET HEADPHONES PEOPLE! It will better increase your play in the game.
I’m surprised Mercy’s wings sound effects weren’t included in this vid
I don't remember how recent it was, but there was a patch that "nerfed" footsteps, making enemy ones louder. I remember because I was on a push map against a very flanky Reaper and I kept hearing him so much I thought he was in my walls
Footsteps and listening to them, especially when someone's flanking you is so important. Trust me, as someone that's half deaf and misses a lot of sounds cues due to this, I've had so many deaths that could have been prevented if I could hear them! *sadness* My only solution so far - duo queue with someone that hears well and warns you! :D
As a hard of hearing person, this helped me tremendously on remembering why I can't hear the footsteps as much as I used to. :P

Also, having music playing in the video really didn't help me being able to hear any footsteps lol.
flip flops is only for you to prevent a competitive advantage
ML7 "And this is why listening for footsteps is important" me who listens to blasting intense music during my games "There were footsteps?"
i love how ml7 is also learning with us in the video 😂
Footsteps are so important LOL I become so paranoid when I know someone’s not dead and I hear one tiny foot sound they make as they’re about to ULT my back line
Honestly, CSGO has trained me unwillingly to listen to every single bit of sound in the game, any clues on the enemy's location, if you fail to notice them you will get killed. So when I got to Overwatch, I was shocked on how many deaf people there are.
Super educational content, keeps it up !!!
i almost always go into a skirmish in queue, and sometimes i just tab out to discord or something else so sit on hero select, so i've learned a few of those spots over time. Good video!
My first overwatch video i ever watched was that literal footsteps video. That’s why I’m so good with sound in the game because i can just hear everything so precisely due to that vid LOL. One of my collegiate vids have a couple of clips where i can just hear where the other team is and doom flanking in the sky
lol the ball walking sound i was like "oh lawd he comin"
Right now you can hear high heels from miles away, it’s like everywhere it’s scary
i always jump when i hear those widow heels
my teammates need to learn this cuz i swear their all deaf
i love this video! it always shocks me how people cant hear characters flanking or that are behind them and then die. I just always thought i just pay attention to it more on support bc im trying to not die constantly

As a sombra main I knew it was sombras footsteps somehow. Idk how but i think it was subconscious from playing her for all these years.
I was curious about the wrecking ball crab walk emote, but when the tap tech works in ball form I guess that's pointless anyways, but yeah the crab walk is fast as heck too so it definitely would've been "pay to win"
Sound design is super important to FPS games so I like this vid
I get PTSD every time I hear widowmaker’s footsteps
I am new to OW2, there is just so much going on, so much noises, it's really hard to pick up the footsteps, but I been getting the hang of it. When I queue up with my friends, they just keep talking in voice chat and I can't hear footsteps anymore lol.

Enable subtitles everything. You will see all the sounds you cannot hear
I came from L4D, so this was one of the first things I learned. You either immediately hear where the smoker is, or you're done for.
I love getting to the enemy's spawn to listen for footsteps and shots. The downside is I only confidently know a handful.
I always did that tapping thing with supports lol, honestly wasn't sure before if it helped or if it just drew more attention to me
I never thought about learning them but because I've been playing this game since OverWatch one release. I just know the footsteps and I know exactly who they belong to.. if I hear footsteps I'll just ping the area if I can't see the player just to draw attention to it. Besides, if you're playing a backline especially a backline hero knowing the footsteps is a really good way to get the heck out of there
Listening for voice lines, steps etc. is important
Usually in the context of knowing who is on the enemy team, I can tell lol. But blind it is a little hard 😅
Characters with the some of the loudest footsteps are Reaper, Cassidy, Widowmaker, and Reinhardt.
Yes, when you think you´re sneeky, nobody will notice, get killed with easy and think he got wallhack, THEN watch the killcam and hear you loud as footsteps is always so frustrating This depends it´s still overwatch, I love the clips of Seagull where he gets killed by Junkrat with absolute 0 sound

omg bro true, i sometimes forget tracer's footsteps are that loud, no wonder i have been caught in what i foolishly thought was an impossible way to do xDD
aight! give us a full video just for footstep recognition training!
To be fair chat was listening to audio from a compressed yt video from a compressed stream not to mention that everyone has different audio settings. Plus you dont have to guess what character you're hearing because you know what the opponents are playing and you can guess which one you're hearing. Fir example the opponents dps are cass and soj. Obv cass boots are stomping on the ground and you can tell soj because she has lighter footsteps plus the power slide
this reminds me of how i just hear genji or hanzo footsteps, or even tracer, i just do 360 spins like a madman trying to search for them the only footsteps ive learnt are ashe, mccassidy, mercy, junkrat, orisa, moira, mei, widow, rein, tracer, genji, hanzo, hog and thats basically it
cass sounds like he got spurs on his flip flops XD
*hears loud high heals sound irl* *chuckles* I'm in danger
Shout out to Speedy! He is always helping out ML. The real MVP
Yes good idea keep the background music on
I didn't know that you still made quite a bit of noise when you crouch walk. Thank you based mL7! I've been doing that thing with Zen that you said (listening for footsteps to try to figure out the enemy team comp at the start on defense) but I stay there as long as I have somebody in TP range to get a pick or two before TP-ing back.
I actually did the thing of going to their spawn and listening to the foot steps a couple of times xD
I been using subtitles and listening in spawn for traps or hiding enemy. Also In one match enemy dude sent in chat his twitch,so i checked what enemies were😆
I'm constantly confusing genjis footsteps with hanzos
I agree, feet in Overwatch are very important
somehow this is so much harder than when in-game
Mugatu- “they’re the same thing!”
I noticed that thing a long way back. I would be late to pick my hero (pee pee break) then I would hear a dva or zarya or tracer from the hero select screen. But my team wouldn't have that hero. So I figured out it was the enemy. And then I might decide to coubter pick them even before the game starts.
Something I kind of picked up out of habit is couch movement jumping. It's just like normal jump movement, but you crouch when you land, and release crouch for the next jump. No Idea if it actually works, but it keeps movement speed relatively high
@naomisilverfang7098
Жыл бұрын
Also if you press the toggle crouch button while you're still in the air I think you'll automatically crouch when you land, even tho the lil tracer crouch symbol doesn't show up while you're still falling 💁🏻♀️
Possibly the only subject I seem to know more about than ML in this game.. 10 years of cs has taught me well.
This thumbnail got me feeling some type of way
You can always tell which teammates don't have game sounds loud enough.
Watching this made me realize that there needs to be a workshop code for a footsteps/gunshots sound test
2:16 ML7 uses Voicemeeter, confirmed! I found VM Potato like 2 years ago, absolutely love it. Can have music and the tunes be in the background, so you can still hear subtle things like footsteps with your tunes. It also lets you mess with your mic a lot, particularly if you route your shit through a DAW. Its free (donation-ware), and the less complicated one is Banana for those who dont need potato. I am curious though, if you read this senior 7, which VM do you use?
This is definitely an underrated skill to climb
There used to be tech that if you fell off high ground and hit jump before landing you’d make almost no sound when you land. I’m so bummed they patched it.
I rely so much on audio cues, especially foosteps to the point where I think my teammates are enemy foosteps lol
Its hard to pick footsteps out of all the heroes on the roster but when you know the enemy team is playing their 5 heroes its pretty simple to tell whose footsteps
ML7 is a foot guy my man
i have them so much louder in my game that this video was too quiet for me to even hear lmao
Answering these honestly. #1 - Doomfist, moving right to left #2 - ????, maybe McCree?? (where are the big boot sounds??) #3 - ??, sounds light but also clunky. Mei? #4 - Zenyatta, obviously. Otherwise Sigma (has gentle gravity sounds)
Footsteps is all I know
So ml7 pro advice: always look at the feet
I can't always tell who it is, unless it's someone like Widow or Reaper lol. But anytime I hear footsteps my head is on a swivel wondering where the flank is coming from.
Is I just ne but that video has the soundscape of concrete rubbing it's hands together
i just need high heel sound, make me feel good
The easiest way to know is just to hear the enemy’s weapons sound when they shoots in the spawn 😂
It’s easier to tell whose footsteps you’re hearing in game when you have a visual of the enemy hero choices
What the hell was that paper sound with Pharah footsteps? I heard it and thought it came from Kiriko!
Make sure you have music down to zero in settings so in a match you can actually hear the footsteps
Yet another reminder from the universe to get a pair of headphones already 😂 so many times I can get caught out just by not hearing some things. I just keep delaying spending money on stuff because heck, who enjoys throwing money away right? Lol
Overwatch 1 direction and footstep audio I feel like was better. I can still tell whose footsteps I hear though.
To be fair to chat... in game, you know what the opposing team is playing, so it's much easier for you to tell who is who
the way i only know widow's footsteps cuz it's easy to distinguish her footsteps than all heroes in ow2
Idk why but I looked at the thumbnail and I thought you were the bassist from the band Jinjer look for him 👀
Me fearing for my life when I hear french lady high heels 😟
1:33 ok for this one it’s useless to know because she is always invisible lol
With context of which five people they chose, it becomes very distinguishable.
somehow it’s a lot easier to guess whose footsteps it is in-game. Maybe because you know what 3 possibilities it could be instead of how many heroes ow has rn
ML7 talking about feet for 15 minutes
Just knowing every single footstep is pointlessly excessive, it should be combined with other information like the scoreboard and visual confirmation. For audio confirmation, heavier footsteps usually mean tank, lighter usually means dps, supports have a rather unique footstep for each support except kiriko who sounds a lot like a dps and all footsteps are usually accompanied by some noise from abilities or even the weapon theyre holding (ahem roadhog, fkn loud bastard). The most important detail about sound is the direction, combine that with whatever you can see and you can have perfect visualization of the battlefield and can aproximate everyone's location. And not just footsteps but any minor audio cue. That's the reason Ive been called a hacker so many times, invisible sombra makes so much noise when you actually start listening.. sneaking enemies too, really..
teammate footsteps are mostly quite, enemy footsteps are loud and more obvious of whos footsteps they are
Only footsteps I recognize is reapers
its actually funny how many times i get accused of wall hacks in silver/gold just because i listen for footsteps, the amount of braindead in lower ranks still astounds me
Maybe if someone wasnt jiggling bells around for the audios it would be a lot easier
