Foothold Trap Modifications to Improve Animal Welfare

In this video I show some of the modifications we can use on the trapline to reduce foot damage in trapped animals. This is particularly helpful if you are trapping an area where you expect to be releasing non-target animals. The proper modifications can help ensure minimal cuts, bruises or abrasions to animal paws and ensure the health of animals released. Not all of these modifications are necessary in all cases, and sometimes there are additional mods that will be helpful. Every situation is unique.

Our law states that land trap jaws that contact the foot be at least 1/4 of an inch thick . Rubber , laminated or stock doesnt matter . No law on swivels , but I have always ran 3 on each short chain . Your right , all these mods make a big difference !

Great video and great advice! Most stock 1 1/2 traps are not base plated. I just picked up a few NOS Sleepy Creek #1 1/2 Offset Modified coil spring traps. They are base plated and are sold with no chain attached. Because the chain has to be center swiveled and additional swivels added to meet the state of Maine regulations, these are a good choice for the Maine fisher trapper. Minnesota Trapline Products still has some in stock.

I use offset footholds (usually also laminated or cast jaws) when I'm not making drowning sets. Having caught my own hand/fingers in most every style of trap I own, it really doesn't make a difference they don't hurt, injure, or maim like people seem to want to believe they do. Just this morning I had a 15 pound barn cat in an offset #2 I had out as an otter set, kitty wasn't any worse for wear, just real muddy and grouchy ran off without a scratch

It would be nice to see some of the suppliers offering traps made to order. Like Maine legal set up 550s with laminated jaws and optional chain type

My Dad bought me my first trap, back in the 60s. I was maybe 8ish and the reason why was that we had a chicken end up dead in the corner with its head half eaten off! Ended up that a mink had chewed a hole in a board or made it bigger to get in and killed a chicken. Dragged it to the hole and this is where my dad found it when he closed them up. He said that the mink had a hold of it and it was hard to pull out of that hole. So we went down to Ames and bought a victor 8 or 9 I think - small trap and we set it that night. Next AM the mink set off the trap and did not get caught! So when he got home after work the next night, he welded nails for teeth on it and that thing looked nasty! Well the Mink avoided it and went in while I was at school. When I got home he had chewed through 1/4 inch wire mesh that was caging in rabbits! The mom was outside the baby box and that thing was inside eating them babies! Birds were still outside at this time. I took my club with nails on one end and when I opened up the cage door, he came out and jumped from the cage towards the hole and I hit him in mid air knocking it to the floor. I continued to beat the thing with that club to death! Dad mounted the skin on a board, full of nail holes, lol. Ha just remembered this! Vermont NH side!

It’s amazing to me the arrogance of man to think a wild animal cares about what’s humane and what’s not. They (Predator) don’t care about making a humane kill… we humans think to much for our own good sadly.

Thanks for the comment Scott. I figured I'd get some flak for that. Hard to decide where to draw the line with wild animals, but they do have the ability to feel pain, and if I can help minimize that it makes me feel better personally. I try not to judge others who feel differently about that though.

The other consideration is the legal ramifications of injuring an animal listed under the endangered species act. Here it could result in the elimination of all land trapping statewide due to animal rights groups' lawsuits.

Endanger species…. That’s another scam. Who made em endangered and who says what is endangered… God didn’t put the dinosaurs on the endangered species list when he flooded the earth (humans say it was ice age which is a boldfaced lie) our own gov eradicated the wolf then has the audacity to call em endangered So silly we allow this crap to exist. Oh by the way I trap year round 😉 been trapping since I was 6 am 44 now and I don’t understand the stupidity of all this against trapping let alone against God. We humans need to wake up Hurry up Lord and find that throne room I’m so done with this stupidity you left me here with. Humans suck. Wildlife is my love now. So sick of all the politics that take away our freedoms. All these laws are in fact a freedom taker. Make laws to be more humane for a predator that doesn’t care so quaint and silly we allowed it. And that’s exactly what it is we allowed it.
