Football and politics - WHY is it so complicated?

Спорт

The 2022 Qatar World Cup sparked a heated discussion about corruption and human rights, with accusations of Western hypocrisy and 'Whataboutism' thrown into the mix. It highlighted the world’s current clash between liberal and non-liberal values. Football and politics have always been interwoven, but how can FIFA and fans find a way to navigate a way through this confronting debate...?

Nice job trying to bridge this difficult conversation. It sadly seems inevitable that people will add politics and social issues to the sport, in as much as most people don't want to see that at all. It would be nice to get some more point of views on this topic from those with "non-liberal values". There was some mention of certain topics; but some more balance on commentaries, and their values and thoughts, from a non-Western worldview would have been helpful.

I decide what is right and wrong because I am Elijah and I'm the only one that holds God's truth. Besides Jesus and Jesus isn't back yet because it's my job to usher in the return of Jesus. Million female is determined by gender located in the brain and anyone saying otherwise is now in the Great Tribulation that started September 1st until they either repent and accept the truth or wait too long and die with the wicked. And the answer to into covid is for anyone that ever sold anything using the name of God to return the money. It doesn't matter what book or religion you believe in because selling God is evil no matter what. Fake ministers have known for over 2 years every time they take more money they kill more people with covid and they are still doing it which proves they all serve Satan. Anyone still attending the fake churches must repent for supporting evil murderers and never go back if you want out of the Great Tribulation that started September 1st. Again, it doesn't matter what book or religion you believe in because truth is still truth and God is still God. But I will tell you the answer to end covid is right in the Bible and Malachi 2 proves Malachi 3:8 is talking to all the thieving church leaders and telling them to return the money they were never supposed to take and covid will end and Jesus returns. This will create a universal income for everyone that is still here as jesus takes her rightful place as the leader of the new world order. Jesus was a female man that returns as a female woman. My wedding is already paid for and it will be broadcasted all over the world.

I know in general, football fans and society have a short memory. Despite recent events, before let's say 2018-2020, aside from racial abuse incidents, football was fairly seperated from politics. Of course there will always be political statements made, but only in recent times has football been involved in something political on a weekly basis it seems. We started kneeling (people shouldn't kneel for anyone but God), bringing rainbow flags, letting players and coaches talk on extremely divisive topics like during COVID etc. Football has always been an ESCAPE from everything going on in the world, but these days it's an extension of our daily lives with opinions from people who don't matter in the grand scheme. The World Cup is a prime example of peak hypocricy. The cold truth is that every nation in this world has a history of misery, and nobody has a right to school others. That's why I absolutely loved Qatar's stance on western hypocricy. It revived the concept of EVERY NATION HAS THEIR OWN LAWS, NORMS, VALUES. Respect us, and we'll respect you. We need to bring this back, because Globalism sucks ass. Also, we as fans need to realize that the only group who profits from all the optics (kneeling, rainbow flags, say no to racism) is ONLY FIFA themselves. It's marketing for THEM, not the cause, because besides that, they're not really trying to solve the problem. There's more money to be made when people are divided.

In the last 2 years, amid COVID-19 pandemic, the world football has been divided by the following events: 1.European Super League, which includes all richest clubs from Europe, that triggered a backlashes for those who didn't enjoy huge successes in Europe. The project was then cancelled, but FIFA decided to launch a new Club World Cup that includes 32 teams and had the same format as the national team to resist Florentino Perez's idea on making a Super League. 2.Decision to ban Russian football for undetermined period after the invasion of Ukraine, which applies to club and national team level. 3.Corruption on the field, which includes an extremely poor referee decisions (either VAR or regular ones). Notable examples were Japan's allowed second goal vs Spain, lots of yellow cards during Netherlands vs Argentina game, among others. 4.Mismanagement of crowd control during the football game led to the violent hooliganism that killed a lot of peoples such as the disaster in Malang (Indonesia). 5.Last, but not least, the World Cup off the field itself, which includes a controversies about LGBTQ, human rights (especially migrant workers), and Palestine.

There's no single source of morality that is adopted by everyone, meaning navigating the political landscape that football exists in very complex. It's really easy to just say 'what about x bad thing in YOUR country' in retaliation, and to be honest, it's not strictly wrong. All countries have its own problems, just like what the video said with the USA and Australia. However, most people who use whataboutism as a defense conveniently ignores that critics who criticize the host country is more likely than not also criticizing their own countries w.r.t. the issues mentioned by the 'whatabout'ers. Sport is political, and what we consider as 'acceptable politics' in sport will change as societies change.

"most people who use whataboutism as a defense conveniently ignores that critics who criticize the host country is more likely than not also criticizing their own countries w.r.t. the issues mentioned by the 'whatabout'ers." They're not though. Those people didn't criticise England for homosexuality being illegal when England last hosted the World Cup or Germany when it hosted the World Cup in 1974. Those people who supported the expulsion of Russia from the Qatar World Cup largely didn't criticise FIFA for choosing to not expel the USA, England and Australia from the 2006 World Cup for their joint invasion of Iraq. They didn't cry about "corruption" when Western countries hosted World Cups due to corrupt bidding processes. They are hypocrites and they hate it when someone points out their hypocrisy.

In Qatar, women often need male guardians to give permission to rent a hotel room, attend school, marry, etc. As beautiful as many Arab countries are, they're still often misogynistic in their laws and customs. I can acknowledge this about Arab countries and acknowledge while more people have legal rights in the West, there are still issues of racism, classism, sexism, and religious bigotry.

Qatari women in the workforce have equal pay as men unlike many western countries. She have free health care and education. And she is not obliged to contribute a penny to the household expenses or her own even if she’s wealthy. Her male guardian is obliged to do that. The concept of male guardian in Islam is to be the protector and the one who look after his wife, children, parents and relatives. Some bring their wrong tradition or misuse it and there should be clear laws to prevent that. A man wanted to accompany the prophet to a battle while his wife went to pilgrimage. The prophet told him to go accompany his wife (to protect her and look after her needs). Another the prophet told him to stay and look after his elderly parents.

Working class coal miners Schalke vs lower middle class Dortmund. Catholic Celtic vs Protestant Ranger but the thing is these political virtues represent their fan bases. Today we have players kneeling down in a different league because in some country they are protesting and some globalists have decided that all the players should kneel too. We have LGBTQ flags as a corner flag but the club owner who belongs to the country which doesn't believe in it and also Anti LGBTQ. We ban Russian players and clubs but never say anything when the USA did the same in the name of spreading democracy. The club should represent the politics of fans instead of global elites.

There are some things i do not get in football and politics. If you have Palestine flag it is making provocations and hate speach but if you have Ukraine flag it is war protest and fight for freedome and yet both countries are under attack, in war and have their own territory occupied. Serbian players and fans can literally offend whole Croatia and open war wunds, there is no consequence but if Croatian fans backfire or Croatian players do same it is nazism, scandal and fifa issues huge fines.

That's the difficult stuff FIFA has to deal with. How do you solve these issues, Velimir? Where do you draw a line? What's your take?

I think people should draw the line in countries that actively commit genocide, like China or Myanmar, or that are supporting terrorism abroad, like Iran or Saudi Arabia.

interesting. The united states supported terrorism by supplying and training the mujahdeen with weapons in order to destroy the democratically elected communist regime in afganistan in the 1970s.they are also active supporters of the war on yemen which is leading to a humanitarian crises.however at the end of the day we all will ignore these issues and only accuse of countries which we percieve to be bad.this is well spoken of in the book manufacturing opinion by noam chomsky

Only pessi fans will say that this was the best world cup ever but for me it was the most bloodiest world cup tournament ever. Islamic countries don't deserve to host this prestigious tournament.
