Footage of Pershing's 1916 U.S. Army Mexican Punitive Expedition - REEL History

Ойын-сауық

On March 9, 1916, spurred by events in the Mexican Revolution, General Francisco "Pancho" Villa's forces attacked the small American town of Columbus, New Mexico, camp of the 13th Cavalry Regiment. In reaction to this attack, President Woodrow Wilson appointed General John Pershing as commander of a U.S. Army expeditionary force that was to capture Villa and police the U.S.-Mexico border. Called the Punitive Expedition at the time, this was just the beginning of a lengthy search for Villa that never resulted in his capture, now known as the Mexican Expedition. It took place March 14, 1916, to February 7, 1917.
Set to music, this is a collection of original footage of the U.S. Army on campaign in Mexico and on the border just months before entering the First World War.

John J. Pershing in due course, having been forced to withdraw from political considerations and before much larger events in Europe left the episode of the punitive expedition behind, admitted to having been "mocked and deceived at every turn by the Mexicans "and wrote:" After launching into Mexico with the intention of eating raw Mexicans, we returned to the first repulsion and now we are hiding at home, like a curd with our tails between our legs. My grandfather was also a member of the expedition . It was about 60 years ago , I learned this on one our rare childhood visits . I asked him " how close did you get to him " . " never closer than three days behind his shadow " . I believe that is the standard reply given by actual participants to weed out stolen valor claims .

WHAT SUCCESS WAS GENERAL JOHN J PERSHING IN MEXICO? The Punitive Expedition ordered by the US-American government of Woodrow Wilson, to catch General Francisco Villa, as punishment for Villa's attack on Columbus, USA, was a resounding failure. They could never catch General Francisco Villa, the US Army, was ambushed and defeated, many times, by the Mexican army, because they do not say that Pershing's soldiers were defeated in the battle of El Carrizal on June 21, 1916, by revolutionaries Mexicans under the command of General Felix Gomez Uresti. Faced with the failure of Pershing, seeing diplomatic relations deteriorated, and the imminent participation of the United States in the First World War, in October the White House agreed to negotiate with the envoys of the Mexican President, Venustiano Carranza, who in November achieved the signing of a agreement in which the United States promised to withdraw the troops.

How ironic you are Uncle Sam 🤣 You are from the first world, but the shootings in public schools continue, innocents are murdered on the public road by white supremacists, murders of blacks, protests that are stifled without respect for rights, of course they are the followers of the messiah Trump. And in Health, if you do not have to pay for medical services, you die, since health is not a right, it is a capitalist business. In Mexico, health is public and free, medicines are cheap, many US-American citizens buy their medicines in Mexico, because it is cheaper for them since in the USA everything is capitalism. How many US-American lives has Mexico saved? Uncle Sam you are from the first world but I prefer to live in a third world country, where I have state assistance, than in a barbarous country like the USA. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for this. My Grand Father was a Civilian Truck Driver on this Expedition. At one point the unit he was with was cut off in a box canyon for 2 weeks. All they had to eat for that time was what was on his truck, Canned Salmon and Canned Stewed Tomatoes. He would never eat Salmon again but he loved Canned Stewed Tomatoes for the rest of his life. In 1917 he was among the first American Troops to land in France, he still drove trucks but he was a Corporal in the Big Red One. By Armistice Day he had 4 4 Campaign Devices on his Victory Medal. He was one of the Last Americans to leave Europe, having been in Charge of a town in Czechoslovakia under the Occupation.

I am not sure based on history how well organized any of the militaries were back in the revolutionary war and I know it seemed that during the civil war, things only became more organized toward the last 2 years. But I must say that during this war, the amazing team work & organization was very impressive overall with so much talent amongst the troops. The leadership had to be very impressive amongst them military. I take it that it was this war that changed the way things were handled with precision and accuracy.

Impressed! Now actually seeing this rare video footage, I see how easy it was for Villa and his men to avoid Pershing columns. You could probably se their cloud of dust 5 miles away. Not a Military tactic that would have any success with any Gorilla Group. At least they took some pictures, so they all felt good about how organized they were. But that organization is worth NIL in a Guerrilla scurmish like this one.

Excellent. I noticed the soldiers are wearing the more cowboy looking campaign hats. I thought the army had switched to what we now think of as the DI campaign hats by 1916. Most photos I have seen of this expedition show the soldiers wearing the later hat. They certainly were a year and a half later when the US entered World War 1. I wonder if these movies might have been mostly of national guard units that generally receive the newest equipment and uniforms last.
