In this video I look at ways to keep you safe during your hiking trips by sharing some tips on food safety. There’s nothing worse than being ill while camping or backpacking and when it comes to cooking in the outdoors this is easy to avoid.
Below is a list of some of the essential things I use in my videos. Clicking on the links helps support this channel. Not clicking on them is also fine!

Your videos are criminally underviewed! Could you please consider doing a video on a super-light, compact, but nutritious food supply to take on a multi day trek? That's at least what I would appreciate! Maybe others would be looking for something like this.

Of course. Is this beyond my recipes already? Specifically for a set amount of time? Feel free to go into detail and I’ll do my best to make a video (or series of) And thank you for saying so. I think it’s my fault for having too many gaps between uploads but I’m working on that!

@@OffTheBeatenPot I suppose maybe just presenting it like - 3 days trekking, XX weight or size ration pack for proper eating. I myself end up carrying dehydrated pre-made food which, whilst passable when you're wet and exhausted just isn't nice. I think proper food is the one thing I am really missing from my longer treks! Is just an idea! :D thanks for the videos anyway do enjoy the content :) Rob

Good one. You made me stop and think. Even if I have wiped the hands with sterilizing wipes, I tend to depend on the food being well packed and straight to pot without touching it. Where I am probably slack is utensils. I have a cut down wood spatula, a tea bag squeezer for tongs, a spork and a Swiss army knife. After use they tend to get a wipe and a promise. The knife alone with all the gaps and tools is probably a huge red zone. I need to think of a dedicated short thin blade with no nooks or crannies. Bad enough if you make yourself sick but if you do it to someone else... 😩 Didn't know you were a trained chef.

I love your utensils! There are a lot of gaps in the knife. I have an opinel. Still has a gap but can be easily cleaned. More recently however I’ve been using a tog pocket knife. You can get titanium sporks with a aerated knife on one side. I used a wooden spoon for years. They work a treat. But my gerber compleat has been a game changer!

@@OffTheBeatenPot so I am more the bushcrafter than the hiker. The reason the SAK (110mm Champ) makes its way into the kit is it has a saw and pliers as well as an excellent blade for veg prep. The pliers when opened to 90° make a great backup pot lifter for a Trangia fry pan. I cook with wood in a Firebox.

You have to suit your own needs. You can always clean the knife and lather it with alcohol gel and give it a pass over a flame. There’s always something to suit your system.

Could you make a video about how you clean food off of pots? Sanitizing the pot does not sound difficult.. but cleaning food? I hate it. For cleaning food, I boil some water in the pot then use a scraper for stuck food.. then usually I drink the water. Not fun haha For sanitizing I try to get the boiled water all around the pot, but I like your idea of directly using the flames to do that!

  • @OffTheBeatenPot

I don’t need t make a video on that! The answer is go out with a friend. Do the cooking and get them to clean! Sometimes it’s just a gross job at the end of a day. If you’re not precious about your pans. Boil the water with some sand or small pebbles. They’ll agitate the food. Does mean you can’t then drink it afterwards though 🤔. Honestly. Your method is the method I use and even the method trangia say to use in their literature. I use a metal scourer and scraper too. But I don’t drink the water after. Though that’s a too tip for not wasting water and keeping hydrated.

HI Thom, I'm confused about raw egg 🥚and how likely it is to get to get sick from it, especially when you see these body builders eating them raw! Should I worry when breaking eggs and getting it over my hands, then transferring it to other surfaces/food? I am actually thinking of breaking the eggs before leaving home and transporting them in a small Nalgene bottle which may make the point moot anyway but would love to know your thoughts! Great to see the videos coming out more regular now as well, keep up the great work!

Treat eggs like a ‘contaminate’ though they’re often not as scary as people make out. If you keep cleaning your hands and surfaces you should be fine. Eggs can last for a very long time unbroken. So when you break them into the bottle, be sure to use them within a couple of days and keep them as cool As you can or just not in direct sunlight. Eggs can be eaten raw. Personally I can’t think of much worse but if you use as fresh an egg as possible you’ll be ok. A good way to check eggs is, when raw give them a jiggle. If you really feel an egg yolk bouncing around in there. It’s not as fresh as it might be.
