Food for the Gods
Food for the Gods, like Fruitcake, is one of those pastries that reminds you that Christmas is just around the corner. Unlike Fruitcake, Food for the Gods is a bar cake. The main ingredients of Food for the Gods are walnuts and dates so they are a bit pricey. They are however easy to make and they keep very well. Just remember not to overbake them. Pack them in foil pouches or wrap them in cello sheets so they will stay moist. They will make perfect gifts for the holidays for those who love fruits and nuts. Happy Holidays!

Chef Rose, instead of molasses can I use Maple syrup? I have all the ingredients in the pantry except for the molasses but we have the maple syrup. Love all your videos. You always explains well.

I have not tried it but I believe you can. But I also think maple syrup is sweeter than molasses so you might need to reduce it. Your fruit cake will not be dark without the molasses. Molasses also imparts a very deep caramel flavor which maple syrup can't give you. Anyway, you can make half a recipe to try how it goes.
Thanks for sharing your recipe! I've been looking for a recipe that is not tipid in ingredients since it's for family consumption.

Thank you so much! Am so happy to know that you enjoy my videos. I use 2 sizes of silicone mats. The big one is the size of a full sheet pan 18"x26". The smaller one is the size of a half sheet pan 13"x18" give and take one inch. Find a size that fits your oven because aside from working on the mats, I also use it inside my oven instead of using parchment paper.

I don’t really know the story behind the name BUT I always say that it is called Food for the Gods because it is so good and the ingredients are expensive that they are only for the Gods 🤪. Thank you for watching my videos.

No ma’am. You don’t need baking powder or baking soda if you want it fudgy and chewy.

It is best to toast the nuts.

Yes we can but it will taste different because moscovado sugar still has molasses in it.

Depends on how big your slices are. For the tutorial, I just cut my food for the gods to the size of the pastry pouch that I had in my kitchen.

About 10% less. Please take note that when you reduce the sugar, the cake tends to be drier because sugar is a moisturizer and a preservative. Some people reduce the sugar and compensates for it by increasing the butter in the recipe. You have to choose the lesser evil - sugar or butter.

You can but the flavor will not be the same and the cake will be lighter in color. Honey is a better alternative.

Just line the pan with parchment paper. No need to grease the pan.
