Andrew, in addition to venting for 7-15 minutes after full boil, you should be venting the autoclave after it builds up pressure (read the All American manual, or even better do an accredited autoclave course on-line). This second venting will allow trapped air to be expelled from inside the bags and allow the hot steam to enter the bags. It will reduce your contams. Hope this helps. Good luck with the new bigger factory!

You might need to regulate the water pressure so your float valve works correctly. I DIY'd a steam sterilizer drum like the ones over on Bubba's Barrels. I bought the sanitary stainless steel drum from Carl (owner) and he gave me tips about how to DIY the sterilizer. The float valves work best at 5 psi to 15 psi. Get a good regulator and play with the valve and regulator to see what pressure it completely stops the flow. I hope my experience helps. Good luck and let us know how that worked out for you.

The high pressure and possibility of the pot exploding is not the only issue . Another problem comes in when you think all of the steam is out when in fact it's not. I didn't have mushroom bags so I experimented with normal bags. When my 90min cooking was done I manually vented by lifting the weight and only a little bit of steam came out causing me to think its safe to open. Little did I know the bag clogged the valve. When I opened it all of the steam cam rushing out. Fortunately no burns!

Hey buddy. Love your channel. I am about to use my Presto 23-quart to sterilize substate and I had a couple questions for you. You instruct to put the opening of the bag to the top so water does not siphon back into the bags, but you don't mention the filter patch, which appears wold be below the water level that you indicate. Does it not siphon back through that? Also, is the extra water beyond the three quarts recommended by the manufacturer to keep it from running out when you run it for two plus hours? Thanks, Richard

  • @Paul-ke5lu
    @Paul-ke5lu Жыл бұрын

What is the water level in relation to the filter patch? I assume the water is below the patch. In your video you pointed to the water level on the side of the bag but when you did this the bag wast turned around (filter patch o other side). When I pressure cook in the fashion your demonstrated I end up with condensation in the bag, and Im concerned about getting a good seal with condensation inside the bag. Do you end up condensation in the bags? How can I prevent this? BTW great video keep up the good work!!

If any it is minimal. I never noticed any additional water because of the filter. Usually what happens is the air pressure in the bag is always trying to escape causing an over pressure effect that would displace water attempting to get in. Personal experience has provided a wealth of information. If I had thought about how to set the bags in upside down, I would not have ruined seed spawn as well as grow medium my first few runs.

Andrew, if you share some of the top viewer tips you read here in the comments as a "Sticky," I believe your hit counts will increase a good deal. I for one don't use much social media, because I only have so many hours in a day, so that's just me. It's not just me though. Promise! :) So, for example, if you liked a viewer suggesting 1-1/2 hours for rye as a good starting point for that particular grain, you may want to reference and thank that viewer in your "Sticky" at the top of this particular video. It's a simple tool that really does work! Also, once upon a time I thought someone made up a chart for "How much water one needs to use to PC in such and such a capacity *per hour,* with several different and common capacities listed. (Ie - 12 qt chart, 16qt chart, 23-25 qt chart, and 41 qt) That's a fast 5 minute video PORTION if you want to just cut to, here's the capacity and how much water we'll start with, then cut to, "Okay, it's been 3 hours, just for wiggle room and round numbers, like a 0.33333 that goes on forever, (wait, what?). This will allow us to determine actual water consumption per hour so that you can feel confident you are always using plenty of additional water to avoid running your pressure cooker dry by mistake. You could cover a 12 or 16 if you have one around, your 23 qt Presto, and (Ideally) a stove-top 941. I believe you did have one? (Or am I thinking you actually have a 925x?) You and your whole fam damily are awesome, brother! Good on ya, and mush love and prayers are always around y'all. (Lovin' them Delta Saints, too. GOOD CALL!)

I see a lot of people that make a fold at the top of the bag about 2inches down after the fold the bag down, it is intended to make a seal at the top of the bag. I notice you dont fold the top after pressing the air out. Is the extra fold on the top to seal it not necessary for grain and sub bags?

I put in some 2 1/2 inch stainless steel screws to prop up my plate on the bottom so they aren't sitting in the water. I've found for a 2 1/2-3hr cook it's just the fight amt of water. Leaves about 1/2 of water left in bottom. This is in a presto 23 or 28qt PC.

First time using my pot today , had the same amount of water and it was nearly bone dry on a 2 hr 15 psi . I’ll be putting about 3 to 31/2 inches to make sure I don’t wreck the pot or my grains , I found backing off the temperature the psi dropped so I think the steam counter weight is not right , thinking it should be a tiny bit heavier , old thread I know had to share it.

Thank you for this video! I’ve been using this method, packing 4x5lb bags (unicorn 3t) into a presto 23qt. I’m getting at least one popped bag per run, sometimes two. Do you have any advice? I’m venting, Keeping at 15 Slowing down cool down I don’t know what to do. :/

Sometimes the bags melt if they touch the side of the PC at the bottom. Usually it's from too much heat going up the sides of the PC. Maybe try heating it up slower with less heat on your stove, or put silicone baking mats between the bags and the sides of the PC.

I just had two bags open on me. Would foil work on the sides of the bags?

I know this is off topic, but with a spent block what do you do with the bags? May I also get the exact dimensions for your fruiting bags for the 12 lbs of substrate.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure mushroom bags are single use. I'm currently experimenting with using gallon jars instead for cultivating mushrooms, but it's already pretty clear it's a lot less convenient than just using the plastic.

Not going to lie. It would be nice to see how they look after opening. Mine are like everywhere, and I'm using lids so they don't touch the edges and youre just throwing them in and having great success. I feel I am over thinking it.

Hopefully someone can answer this question I have.. do wr leave the filter patch facing out when we fold the bag down, or filter patch inside against the bag? Will doing it on the inside potentially cause the bag to burst if air needs to be released?

Been trying to find good information about the last steps after you remove the bags from the pressure cooker - looking for good instruction on how to seal sterilized substrate blocks. Do you just seal them? And then pop them open when it’s time to add the grain spawn? Is it that easy? Or is there a method to it?

Hey, how hot does the temperature get during pressure cooking process? I’m wondering what the bags are made of to be able to stand high temps. From what I’ve been reading, steam bags, regular ziplock bags, and a few others, will melt at boiling temperatures.
