Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE Hair Transplant): Explained

Hair Transplantation has evolved significantly over the past few decades. Gone are the days of macro transplants, where multiple hairs were taken at once and placed unnaturally on the head, resembling a doll's hair. This outdated method resulted in an artificial appearance, giving hair transplants a negative reputation for looking very pluggy.
Nowadays, the process involves follicular unit extraction, where single hair units are carefully taken one at a time. Visualizing a magnified version of the scalp reveals tiny holes, each containing one to four hairs. These individual units are extracted and transplanted to the scalp, creating a natural look. When performed correctly, follicular unit extraction should be almost imperceptible.
Advancements in technology have led to the development of smaller punch sizes for extraction. Older methods used punches as large as 1 to 1.4 millimeters, but modern tools now utilize 0.5 to 0.6 millimeter punches, similar in diameter to a needle. This minimizes scarring on the back of the head, allowing for short hairstyles without visible marks. The progress in follicular unit extraction has revolutionized hair transplantation procedures.
Over the years, there have been significant advancements in follicular unit extraction. At our facility, we have implemented some unique practices.
- We consistently incorporate PRP (platelet-rich plasma) into the transplant process.
- PRP involves drawing a small amount of blood from the arm, which is then spun in a specialized machine to extract the platelets containing growth factors and nutrients.
- This PRP is applied to the scalp before the transplant and serves as a nourishing solution for the grafts while they are outside the body.
- During follicular unit extraction, we preserve the grafts in hypothermosol, a specialized solution that maximizes their viability, ensuring they are robust for implantation into the scalp.
