Fogbuster Vs. Trico CNC Coolant: 3 Minute Comparison!

Ғылым және технология

We prefer the Fogbuster! It's less expensive, accepts more coolant options and equal (if not better) performance!

I went ahead and went with the fog buster kit with my PCNC440 from Tormach. I'm anxious to get this machine in and start learning and producing more on my own instead of outsourcing my machining. Your videos have been extremely helpful and have definitely helped build my confidence in being able to figure all this out.

John, great comparison! I attached the Fogbuster nozzles in the same place at first but found the magnet mounts stick much better to the sheet metal components than they will to the cast mill head. For small parts I stick it to the face of the electronics enclosure so I don't have to adjust between tool changes. For deep pocketing where it needs to move with the z axis it works much better on the motor door (with an enclosure it doesn't look like you have clearance for this option, but thought I'd toss it out there for anyone without an enclosure, might save someone some fabrication time making a new arm). Thanks again for the videos.

I agree on the Fogbuster to be one of the best systems, nice comparisation. Myself, I stoped using misters completely, its dry/airblast or full flood for me ;)

I have a G0704 I recently converted to CNC, and I was originally planning on doing cheap flood coolant to avoid having to buy a new compressor. However, I really don't want to deal with the mess and maintenance of a system that I only use on occasion for a hobby (I think flood will probably end up more expensive and time consuming in the end anyways...). It looks like a 20 or 30 gallon compressor + fog buster is next on my purchase list. This video was timed perfectly for me. Thanks!

Awesome video :-) Very informative... It's one thing to have a CNC Machine, but the add-ons are very significant too. I will experience nothing less in my system too, which is coming along :-) In this New year, Btw: Happy New Year :-), I am putting on a push to get my system finished and will show it off as soon as it's ready :-) I really appreciate all of the help you have given me. You will be rewarded :-)

The Fogbuster does the mixing in the valve so it is easy to make replacement tubes that go from the valve.

I just ordered parts to make a "fog buster", I was able to get all the parts with 2 mag indicator bases for a dual nozzle system for $200. It's going on a fadal first and if it works there I will build another one for my tormach.

Appreciate the video but I feel like the two systems are not usually comparable. I was under the impression that the Trico you have is usually used to disperse oil (hence the small bottle size) while the Fogbuster is used to disperse (water based) coolant (more similar to Kool Mist products). The whole reason they called it the fogbuster is because of the way the Kool Mist, and similar products, mix coolant at the nozzle. Either way, I appreciate the video and it solidified my decision to go FogBuster.

Just picked up a FogBuster, and I don't know why the hell I waited so long. Like you, I don't like the magnet (especially for use on a CNC router with vibrations), but I don't really like the idea of spending an extra $80 on a "better solution". With that said, the "better solution" has the added advantage of being able to be used for other applications ;-)

I have a kool mist single sprayer, the one that comes with the loc-line, and "use your own tank" mister. It has one adjustment knob for both air and coolant. I am on a non enclosed manual mill. The air to coolant ratio is potent, like feel dizzy potent. Add too much air, the coolant becomes thick, foggy, and potent. Add less air, and coolant doesn't have enough pressure to shoot out, and clear chips. There's no perfect adjustment. My coolant tank is a 5-gal. bucket and on the floor, the coolant line was about 4.5 feet to the spindle. I literally just moved the line siphon to higher than the adjustment block. Coolant comes out so much easier and the line in now about 2ft long. But too much coolant comes out, and even with a low amount of pressure like low enough to where you can point the nozzle at your face with no coolant obviously and not shoot your eyeball out of your head. Lol Is this a solid consistent mist? Say I use it outside of en enclosure. Will I pass out like I'm feeling with my set up? I've tried accu-lube and their blocks just suck and just don't work, also the that brand coolant had me passing out. What to do?

I'm pretty sure the Fog Buster tubes are actually proprietary as well. They have two different internal diameters which create the droplets. The design was (and maybe still is) patented, and many people use the patent files to make their own.

I know I have heard you talked about not liking the koolmist setup before. Why not exactly? I recently picked up 2 koolmist kits for use on my surface grinder and the other for my mill. Haven't gotten a chance to use it yet due to needing an 1/8" npt male to 1/4 npt female adapter which no one around me besides Mcmaster seems to have.

+NYC CNC We use koolmist setups on our manual mills where I work and they work great. The only problem is you turn on and adjust the flow manually with a knob so many of our guys waste coolant spraying too much. You would also have to rig something up to turn it on and off with cnc.

  • @JonGohr

    @JonGohr

    8 жыл бұрын

+NYC CNC The 770 was a good fit for me, working with a lot of aluminum so the 10,000 RPM spindle is nice speed enhancement over the 1100. You give up a few inches of travel but not quite as much as you do on the 440. I've had a couple of challenges with the 13.25" of Z on the 770 so the 10" on the 440 wouldn't have worked out real well for me. I was somewhat power limited in my garage so only needing a dedicated 20 amp 110 outlet for the 770 was easier/cheaper than an extension panel to add more 220.

+Toms Tiny Shop Great points! It's amazing how much time the spindle spends at 10,000 RPM's when cutting aluminum. The 770 has been a great machine for me and I have no complaints. Probably would have held off on buying the 4th axis right away, it's still unused sitting in the box, and bought the enclosure instead. Machine can make one heck of a mess!

So I came across the deal of the century and got two Trico MD-1200's for $300. It works great on the manual mill and pretty good on the 1100. How does the fog bust compare with air velocity over with that long brass tube over the Trico?

  • @OriginalJetForMe

I bought a Trico, but haven't installed it yet. I also bought a gallon of their synthetic coolant, but it was only $40 or so. Here's my main question: The FogBuster claims to be superior because it doesn't atomize the coolant, and there for the coolant doesn't get into the ambient shop air. Even though I have the enclosure, I'd rather not be inhaling the coolant. Does the Trico atomize the air? Because it's so far unused, I figure I can sell my Trico for a decent amount of money, and just get the FogBuster. What do you think? Thanks!

Interesting. So what sort of sized air-compressor is actually required? You say yours is bigger than required but an indication of a sensible size to start with to drive a fogbuster (plus say a hand air-duster) would be useful. (Air compressors seem remarkably expensive!). Anyway, thanks for all the videos.

Here are some data for those considering the Fogbuster. I bought one for my PCNC 770 a couple years ago and haven't used my flood coolant since. I don't use my 770 on a daily basis so I don't like to maintain the flood coolant system compared to no maintenance of the Fogbuster except adding coolant every few months. My single nozzle Fogbuster worked fine with a cheap ($200 on sale) Enco Jupiter 2HP 20 Gal 5.5 cfm @ 90 PSI compressor. I installed the 2nd nozzle Fogbuster upgrade from Tormach a few months ago and the Enco compressor burned up the next day because it couldn't keep up with extra flow required with 2 nozzles. I upgraded my compressor to a slightly better $630 Sears Craftsman Professional 1.9HP 27 Gal 5.8 cfm @ 90 PSI and it has been working fine with 2 nozzles. My guess is the Enco compressor may not have been able to run continuously at its rated capacity and the Sears compressor can. I agree with John that the magnets that come with the Fogbuster aren't strong enough to hold the nozzle in position and they also scratch the paint on my 770 so I replaced them with much stronger neodymium cup magnets (1.8" 160lb pull force for $5.19ea, search for "CUP-46" at magnets4less dot com). To protect the 770's paint I covered the new magnets with rubber covers (48mm, search for "MM-RC-48" at kjmagnetics dot com). Kjmagnetics sells a nice 48mm cup magnet that fits the rubber cover but it costs $16.58ea (over 3x the price of magnets4less). I've been very pleased with both the 1 and 2 nozzle Fogbuster system and don't think I will use my original flood coolant system again.

+NYC CNC no - its from a small german company (SK CNC) - but not too far from DIY :) - allthough I think they make quite an effort in producing these gantrey machines like annealing the steel frame. I have no idea if that really makes much difference but I am always surprised how precise that huge thing is (without having much reference - only a small really hacked together DIY full-aluminium gantry mill from back in the days when my interest in CNC started :)
