FOEC: Who gets Europe?

Together, they explore whether a pan-European identity exists, and if so, what it consists of and whether we can preserve it.
In his international bestseller The Strange Death of Europe Douglas Murray argues that Europe faces an existential crisis of its own making. A rapidly transforming population and a guilt-ridden, defeatist attitude lead to Europe’s gradual, but certain downfall. Will the current crisis be the catalyst to push Europe over the edge? Swiss political activist Flavia Kleiner, challenges Douglas Murray in a discussion about what unites us Europeans and the possibility to survive what is most probably going to be the biggest crisis in the EU’s history.

Legend has it that Flavia is still trying to figure out what “liberal institutions” she was supposed to be talking about.

To be fair, I think that is a mistranslation. In German the word "institution" can mean "an established law, practice, or custom." So I think she is referring to practices/values. She is still incoherent though.

Oh dear, this was painful to watch. Truly a battle of wits against an unarmed woman. I would be hiding my face in shame too if I were in Flavia Kleiner's shoes. That was like watching a slow motion car crash! Douglas was impressive, as usual. Flavia came across as vapid and lacking in substance - "confetti" as Douglas wittily said. I will grant that Flavia has a strong grasp of English, even though it is not her native language. But despite that, when she kept harping on about "institutions", she apparently didn't mean institutions at all - she meant "values". Although, I wouldn't bet that she would be able to be any more detailed about what those "values" are than she was on "institutions"!

What was on the mind of the organizers when they paired Douglass with Flavia? They obviously belong to a different weight class. The "mediator's" partiality was yet another major issue with me. Also, I expected a debate rather than an "exclusive interview" with Flavia. It was painful to watch, a complete mess, an embarrassing event for everyone.

Flavia was literally butchered by Murray. She couldn't even respond. She was totally and utterly awestruck. She obviously didn't know who she was up against and what a formidable opponent Murray is. Her presumptuous puerile attack was met with the most fantastic, most devastating response she might've deserved.

The lady who chaired the meeting was at fault for this failure. Douglas was not asked to give his opening keynote speech. That wasn’t a debate. It was a ramblings of Flavia show. Flavia, have you read some of Douglas’s work? If you have you will see he is very liberal, the most liberal person I have seen, maybe you even agree some things between you. At least the Madness of crowds.

I’m sure just about all sane people in Europe want the freedom to take a train to different countries on the continent, to try their wines and food, just as I’m sure just about everyone would agree that deportation for slightly speeding in their cars is far too strict. She dodged the question from the man in the audience, (as she did all of Murray’s questions), when he asked if their were any valid reasons for refusing someone to migrate to your country. I’m sure just about all sane people in Europe would agree that we don’t want outsiders who, for example, believe it’s the right thing to take a train to Nice, not to sample the wine and cuisine, but to chop the head off of an old lady, or outsiders who would decaptitate a teacher for showing his students satirical pictures of Mohammed.

... Good heavens, what a mess ... The two elephants in the room were never addressed: 1. tribal race relations in the EU, and 2. ~ predominantly Judeo-Christian property-owning ‘liberals’ in the EU facing an invasion from predominantly property-less, unskilled, un-educated non-Christian migrants ... Douglas’ command of the English language left his poor ill-prepared opponent in the dust. It’s naive to extol ‘liberal institutional values’ in the face of those who arrive ambitious and hungry, not for EU-Judeo-Christian ‘values’, but for Europe’s evident material wealth. ~ Wake up. In turn, how much should those living and working within democracies in Europe, who’ve struggled for generations to provide for their own families, be ‘taxed’ to ‘give’ to migrating non-Europeans? How do you deal with immigrants employment? Their health care? Their short and long-term housing needs? How much of your own income and how much land within your own country are each of you willing to ‘give’ to the begging or marauding ‘refugees’? ~ And for how long? These ARE the Big Tough questions that do NEED answers ~ from all countries within the EU.

The US American classicist, professor, and public intellectual Victor Davis Hanson has stated that he has during his decades-long teaching experience never seen students who at the same time are more ignorant while being more arrogant than at the present time. This is apparently, and unfortunately, not only a US phenomenon. While I know that Flavia Kleiner is no longer a student, I look at the attitude Flavia Kleiner expressed and the wording she used used and that thought came to mind.
