Focusing on Nutrients Is A Scam - T. Colin Campbell PhD

Famed Nutrition professor T. Colin Campbell says: Stop hyper-focusing on individual nutrients. We need to completely rethink the science of nutrition. Nutritional science, long stuck in a reductionist mindset, is transformed by this revolutionary approach. Stop reading articles and watching videos about this nutrient or that, or even this food or that. It's about eating WHOLE foods, not about a few specific nutrients or foods where the research you may have heard - is probably wrong or irrelevant. This is Dr. Campbell's full talk from our 2013 Healthy Lifestyle Expo. You can get hundreds of fascinating full talks on DVD or immediate download from our store at store.vegsource.com

After going whole food plant based ten months ago, I have watched and listened to many many KZread presentations on the subject of nutrition and health. Included among them have been many featuring Colin Campbell, and all of his very good. But this one from 2013 stands out as a masterpiece. A superb presentation by a brilliant nutrition scientist.

Dr. Campbell isn’t just a genius, he is a good man, a courageous man, a man of his convictions. Because he stood his ground, look at how many lives he has helped. I hope the momentum of what he has discovered continues to be appreciated by others. Do we have enough sickness to drive people to find his research on the internet? Yes, it is how I found Plant-Based nutrition, and wow, has really helped me and my husband.

Fiona Benassi I agree. These are important acronyms and there really aren’t that many. WFPB especially. That’s what it’s all about. That acronym needs to become as well known as the word vegan. Whole food plant based diet is a mouthful and people need to be able to have a common language if we’re going to transition to a way more plant based society. ☮️🌱

I've only met Colin Campbell once. But from his writings, I don't think he cares much about a Nobel Prize. What I think he does care about, is dramatically improving our failing healthcare system. His book, "Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition", kind of spells out how to go about doing this.

I don't pay much mind to what the rda or FDA have to say as I really don't believe theyre concerned with really keeping ppl healthy. If they were they'd stop companies from producing such toxic foods, the ones with tons of sugars and carbs and endless amounts of ingredients most people cant understand or pronounce. This is of course because our Govt wants us to be more reliant on drugs, keeping big pharma in business.. This is my opinion of course.

It's not about what you should add but what to remove in your diet. Eat simple and you see how the body heals fast. Human is the only specie that has complex diet. Other species have very simple diet, they eat in a mono-meal way -- they dont mix up one food with others. The main reason why the RICE DIET of Dr.Kempner worked is not just because it's a starch-based diet but because it's a SIMPLE DIET. The body is very resourceful, and we can literally survive and heal fast in a simple and right diet.

Campbell, McDougall, Esselstyn, Barnard, Greger, and their plant based colleagues have many testimonies from patients, as well as people who have read their books and applied their teachings, who have reversed their illness and disease. There's a lot to be said about that.

All great points in the presentation. Nutrition is very confusing in the public, and marketing doesn't make it easier. With the lack of training (I'm a chiropractor, and did not recieve a great deal of training through that program), I had to go and further my education to feel more comfortable talking on the topic. Food is something we engage with multiple times a day, so educating the public on proper nutrition is absolutely crucial for health.

Personally I take reductionism a step further, and that to reduce human health solely to nutrition is reductionism because health is the sum total of all contributing factors such as enough sleep, fresh air, sunshine, exercise, healthy relationships, meaningful work, etc. and I'm sure you feel the same way Dr. Campbell so I hope you make this point in a future video. And I'm glad to hear Dr. Campbell use terminology like the infinite wisdom of the body and the default of the body is health - yes it is, and that sounds like you have read Natural Hygiene Philosophy - good job Dr. Campbell.

The issue with many of these supplement studies is that the researchers use vastly inferior nutrients - (cost etc) this is like using gmo white flour instead of organic whole grains. The data on the actual quality of the products is scarce but I know of several scientists that looked into the quality of the supplements used and were shocked to find they were using the cheapest often synthetic such as syn beta-carotene,( in that study Colin talks about), contaminated, oxidised fish oils with very high PCBs, Hg, even rancid (not that I am a fan of Omega 3 fish oil supplements). So using data of nutrient supplements with no information/assays of quality becomes unreliable too. Ultimately eating pureplantwholefood takes the guesswork out but I have been working with using high quality practitioner supplementation in mainly very unhealthy patients, and had great results for years to augment the main focus healthy eating.

Thanks Jeff and Colin. Dr. Campbell advises us to focus on the whole plant, which is so true. Because the whole has what's called emerging properties that do not exist in individual components. This wholistic approach is the foundatioin of nutrition for health, and healing. So, when I hear this or that component in a plant might harm you, I don't care at all, because as lonog as I eat the whole plant, the whole plant will intelligently regulates everything and heal me. God bless!

You are not alone. Happens to me too. Its very yard to convince people, although i have shown them the prove. I have lost 23 kilos from doing this. Without exercise. I no longer take stomach ulcer medicine since February 2nd 2020. I drink wheatgrass shots too, eat rice, potatoes, never hungry. But oil seems to be in everything, and its HARD for people to convince them to stop eating oil. Part of me is frustrated. I want them to be healthy, especially during Corona. But it likes talking to the wall. Even those thats interested at first, changed their mind when I mention about no oil.

Like so many times before, i could not agree more. And one aspect here worries me particularly. Vitamin B12. I also think a reductionistic approach is fatal, esspecially in the context of supplementing. But what makes this situation fatal is, that regarding all other nutrients, you can just get the 'real' thing by eating the appropriet foods. But that is not the case with B12. You can purchase it in various forms as a supplement. Hydroxy-, methyl- or cyano. But is that really all that there is to it? In fact, we have just a vague idea about the impact regarding this substance. is it the vitamin itself, the level in the blood or in our liver, that makes it crucial to our organism and well beeing. It is quite possible that a certain digestive process, which ultimately leads to B12 and its storage is, at least, equaly important to us. So what can we do? Stay meateaters?

So called anti-nutrients may exert health benefits.Phytates, for example, have been found to lower cholesterol, slow digestion, and prevent sharp rises in blood sugar. Many anti-nutrients have antioxidant and anticancer actions,so avoiding them entirely is not recommended.looking at the effects of lectins in isolation doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, nor does concluding that cooked kidney beans are dangerous.studies of lectins and health effects,at worst, some very provisional hints of potential mechanisms for potential harm, and a greater volume of provisional hints of potential benefit.

The most pressing health issue we have today is low systemic integrity in relation to the opportunities available to parasitic organisms. This includes viruses, bacteria and multicellular parasitic organisms, but even more importantly intelligent beings making choices for relationships. Parasites seek to infiltrate, corrupt and utilize host systems in order to feed and/or spread. Host systems are required to have an immune system response, identifying, targeting and removing parasitic organisms to preserve functionality and vitality. This includes the good vs evil paradigm, biology, technology, government, criminality, etc. This is the model explaining parasitic relationships. They require low integrity in our systems. Poor computer security and user behaviors facilitate computer viruses. Poor nutrition, exposure to chemicals, lows sleep and high stress allow disease causing organisms to have a chance. Poor police work can permit higher crime. It's the same with our government, which we are the cells of its body. Parasites infiltrate, corrupt and utilize host systems (regulators, scientific studies, scientific institutions, media outlets, educational institutions, etc.) in order to feed (more money for their industries) and/or spread (more influence for preservation or expansion of profitable operations). Host systems (the institutions that govern our behavior and us) are then required to identify, target and remove the parasitic organisms in order to restore functionality and vitality. Hosts have little need to lie and feel advantaged in an open honest environment. It's more conducive to their self-interests of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. When one chooses to be a parasite, the the self-interests become in conflict with hosts. Deception, perhaps even coercion, then fleeing and then bargaining will be the optimal protocol for parasitic relationships. Know a tree by its fruit. Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness or its opposite? What does it do to US?

This is very upsetting! We have a hard enough time trying to help people to follow a healthy wfpb lifestyle. When he is associated with Dr. Campbell it makes one question others credibility. Thank you for giving us this information. I wish other leaders in the wfpb lifestyle would not have him as a speaker at their conferences. Especially the online ones.

at 29 minutes in, the chart of fat consumption compared to breast cancer risk shows a lot of less developed countries with low breast cancer risk, and a whole lot of developed countries with high risk. my immediate question is: could this be merely because in developed countries, more women see doctors more regularly, who have more access to high-tech diagnostic machinery and methods?

  • @vegsource

    @vegsource

That's certainly a thought. But Dr. Campbell is describing the history of this subject and the clues that appeared along the way and where they led. We know today that breast cancer is hormone-dependent - dependent on estrogens like estradiol, and prostate cancer, which is dependent on androgens like testosterone - and since the less developed countries ate diets much lower in the animal and processed foods that raise those hormones, it was a valuable clue that ended up pointing the right way. Diet turned out to be the key to understanding the differences in these cancer risks and not visits to the doctor or under-diagnosis in poor countries.

It was long noticed that Japanese women have lower breast cancer risk. A smart researcher developed a study that examined breast cancer risk in women of Japanese descent living in Hawaii and Los Angeles. It compared those who ate a traditional Japanese diet, low in meat, with those who ate the Standard American Diet. The results showed that Japanese genes had minimal impact on risk. The women who ate the traditional diet had a breast cancer risk almost identical to women in Japan. Those who ate the SAD had cancer risk almost as high as the US average. So, the women in the study had the very similar genetic backgrounds, same physical environmental exposures (for each location), same US healthcare. The only difference was diet. The conclusion is pretty clear.

Campbell: "We don't need to know the effects of single agents on health, because this is not the way that nature works". (P. 87 of "Whole"). I'd like to hear more of what Campbell says about supplements. It's so, so ,so hard to let go of the very few supplements I take, such as D3, K2, and zinc. But "Whole" says to stop taking supplements, as long as you eat a diverse WFPB diet.
