Focal Point - Lebanon: A Failing State

One year on from the blast that ravaged its capital Beirut, Lebanon is still reeling.
Decades of corruption and mismanagement have shaken the infrastructure and led to a chronic economic crisis.
In this documentary, we take a look at the root causes of Lebanon's crisis, and ask whether any change is possible within the current political system.

Countries need independent leaders free from outside influence to prosper, but that's easier said than done. In most of the world the media and all the parties are controlled by the same people.

A failed state starts at top with the security failure. Whoever has guns, controls animals, not humans. Humans are far more powerful than any guns i..e look at the USA's failure in Afghanistan. Its the people who have to rise up and I am glad to see non-sectarian political parties rising to the challenge of a failed system and state in Lebanon.

Lebanon has over 13 million population which over 10 million of them have dual citizenship and are living outside of Lebanon. Lebanon is not an industrial or agricultural country and rely only on tourism and hand out from outside world and this make Lebanese to rely heavily on imports of energy , food or even pharmaceutical products or other manufacturing products. Lebanon like most arab countries are top importer of western or Asian products Ruther than relying on the domestic manufacturing and like Qatar, UAE, Kuwait or even Saudi Arabia would have been in the same situation or even worse without the oil or gas .

Diversity did not occur until the modern era when non-whites from the empire began to immigrate to England, upon which England has gone downhill. You are referring to empires that conquered areas and became diverse in their empire. This is not the same thing as a country being diverse. In those empires, the non-dominant groups were not equal. Diversity has made the US much worse, diversity (combination of Russians and Ukrainians) has made Ukraine very difficult to govern. Iraq, South Africa (since the ANC took over), Egypt (the southern Egyptians hate the Northern), I don't see modern examples of diversity working. So is the US. North Korea is the most homogenous country in the world. How is this playing out for them? Diversity is not the only factor whether a country becomes wealthy. Yes diversity may create problems because whenever you have different people you will have friction, but also opportunities. It depends on how you approach diversity. Sir I'm Lebanese, I live in Lebanon and going through all this terrible situation... I'd like to tell you that when you reach to the point we have reached, it goes beyond fearing the virus, not that we don't, but what we are living makes us taken by so much more, imagine your life becomes like every day you care to survive. That's to summarize. Yes we are living in the worst time of our lives, it never was that much even through war. Now going through this feels like we are hostages in our own country by our own government, and we really need help! True Lebanon is a beautiful country, and I hope you come visit when the situation here gets better and we have fuel for you to tour around and discover the beauty.

@ 21:30 you talk about the western world and Arab world and Lebanon being cut off from them. What have those 2 worlds done for Lebanon in 1982? What is happening now in Lebanon is the direct result of the Israeli invasion in 1982 which damaged Lebanon beyond repair.
