I had a compact model for about 8 months in 2020-2021. In those 8 months I put roughly 1200 rounds through it and had the firing pin break. Replaced it with an apex striker and sold it.

I've handled a few FN509s. When TGP says that trigger is creaky he isn't kidding. Worst trigger I think I've felt overall on an $700 polymer striker gun. The Sig P320 even has a better trigger than it. Just don't drop it lol

@@thegunpenguin they all have been creaky, with a wide variance with trigger weight pull, some really bad, and some on the level of gen 5 glock. It makes more sense to buy a gen 5 mos glock than this gun.

FN seems to be in a slump. Their pistols have just been ok at best, the original SCAR’s were cool, but they can’t even rechamber those successfully, and they will void the warranty if you put a silencer on them. What the hell FN.

Years ago I spoke to one of their armorer's shortly after they adopted the Beretta 92 & the S&W 59 series, I would estimate around 1988. He was pretty detailed about what the LAPD Firearms unit thought of the Beretta 92 & the S&W. They were very Impressed with the Beretta 92 to say the least! But he did admit that since the US Defense Dept test's which led to the adoption of the Beretta 92 In 1985 was used as a short cut by the LAPD and quite a few other US LE Agencies, why spend their own time & money testing pistols when the US Government did it for them! Your thought's about the FN 509 reminded me about some other thumbs down comments I've heard about this handgun. It's my understanding that the 509 trigger group has a lot of parts in it? I can't verify that and I'm not going to buy one anytime soon to find out! This is the reason why Glock has such a large chunk of the US LE market, the Glock is soooo easy to repair. I also heard Bill Wilson complain about the complicated trigger group In the Sig P320!

  • @thegunpenguin

Man, you always have great info! Yeah, though I was a bit hyperbolic about it in the video, the trigger mechanism is more complicated than a lot of the competitors.

Man that sucks that yours has so many problems. Honestly I'm surprised because I have had zero malfs in three years (I'm not counting the occasional hard primer), and a round count somewhere between 2 and 3k. Definitely have never had a stovepipe. Caveats: I did the whole Apex jig and trigger job, I use the yellow recoil spring exclusively, and I swapped in the Apex heavy duty striker. My main complaint is that the slide stop is easy to ride which messes with lrho if I'm not paying attention (usually when switching from other pistols). My other complaint is the high cost out of the box, and that it doesn't come with a decent trigger despite the price. Edit: all in all, I'm pretty happy with the pistol, and I trust it to go bang when I want it to.

Always heard that these almost required 124gr NATO spec rds to function as they should. I've come close a few times to purchasing an FN.. be it 509, FNX, etc. But I never feel like the feel is representative of the price when I get them in my hands. 🤷🏼 They look cool...My M&P 10mm is also in the 1000rd "break-in" club lol... So frustrating.

I've definitely lucked out on my 509 and got one that was made on a Wednesday. The double action only trigger does leave a lot to be desired and even trying to get in there to give it a Dremel polish is a pain in the f****** ass. I've avoided any Striker and or firing pin issues so far. I do have the Apex upgrade kit waiting though complete with trigger and heavy duty Striker.

Great info! I could deal with the trigger if mine worked as well as competing designs. Talking to folks before I filmed the review, these either seem to work flawlessly, or are nothing but trouble, depending on the individual gun you get. But that's just anecdotal info.

@@thegunpenguin in a perfect world FN would realize you would be a decent consultant to bring in at a very affordable price. It does seem like they just did not give a s*** about handguns until the 5/7. They've got that edge and that new 509 they're pushing hard now. I'd like to see the entire series of pistols be Revisited with a mark 2 iteration. Keep the things that are working right and really work on the trigger Striker and certain other aspects of the weapon series.

My experience with the 509 was similar to yours. I was really expecting that for the price it would be a major improvement over standard striker-fired pistols.
