What powerful, moving and extremely relatable lyrics. This song is so humbling. Everything that I am, all the good that you see in me and all the amazement you feel when I speak the words of Christ, it has nothing to do with me or was by be. All the glory belongs to Christ and what He did for humanity. I only held a nail that day as He hung on the cross for my sins. He extended forgiveness nevertheless when I came to Him for mercy. "The art that I create is only a faded reflection of what He's already made." Whatever I do, Christ did it first, I'm merely His vessel as He continues to carry out His work in me. I don't have any reason to boast. I only boast in the cross of Christ.

i love this song so much. I love all flyleaf songs, but this song really showes her humility. She keeps getting glory for her songs and voice, but she says she cant take it. the words are God's. she just was holding the pen when it came down onto paper. I love how she is so down to earth. I know she says she cant take any of the glory, but I cant help but give her props. but the props go to god too. he saved her and she wouldnt be able to hold the pen today w/ out him.

I love this song, its one of my faves. I can definently relate to it. Lacey's pretty much saying in the song that she doesnt deserve all the credit for the music she writes. That God gifted her with the ability and that she's using it to praise him, espicially since most/all of Flyleafs songs have religious bases, if not striaght out praising him. I can definently relate to this song in perticular because I love 2 write, and Im thankful tht God gave me this gift.

I remember coming here just a year ago saying how I believed in God and how I liked how lacey isn't exactly begging for attention here. I still do. I like that she isn't after fame & money but that her music means something. but I no longer feel the kind of connection between myself and her that made me gush over it because I actually felt exhausted by trying to "follow God" and all that. it was like every little freakin thing I did was a mistake. still love flyleaf, though. always will.

No. She's talking about how she's NOT God, just because she spreads her interpretation of his messages. She's simply a "penholder", who doesn't "deserve" all the credit, because she draws so much inspiration from HIM, that it's basically plagiarism: "And all the art that I supposedly create.... is simply a faded reflection, of something he's already made."

I totally agree with you on this. I always hate how the usual songs are all pretty much a facade. I like Flyleaf cuz they're very straightforward and pretty much tell it as it is. I also think a lot of songs make it where they don't sin and sometimes they take the credit, where Flyleaf pretty much is saying "I wouldn't be here without HIM, I refuse to take the credit. I'm imperfect" I love it

When maricles happen and you are touched by the holy spirit and seen what the Spirit has done in others physically, emotionally, psychologically...you know He's real. you are partially right, she is being humble in saying that she doesn't deserve the credit and praise, but she doesn't say it comes naturally,the line "I'll show you what he did," is referring to God. All she is doing is passing along the praise she gets from people to whom she thinks deserves it for giving her what she is. It's a praise song, she later even talks about his mercy... believe it or not

I read a few pages back, and someone said that Lacey was their idol. That's ironic; in this song she's basically saying that her songwriting is divinely inspired and therefore she shouldn't and won't be credited & idolized for it. I came here to listen to this song just to discipline myself for idolizing her & technology. If I credit Lacey for anything, it's gonna be for being a good sister in CHRIST. be proud in the Lord.

One of the Flyleaf guys said on the flyleaf website said their songs are very influenced by their faith, but they refuse to use their God as a marketing ploy. Sometimes the song is a "me to God" perspective, for example Perfect, All Around Me, and Red Sam, and sometimes they're more about being in a place, or being affected by a place, which isn't "healthy" such as "I'm So Sick" and "Breathe Today." But all of their songs are laced with words that reflect their faith.

No. She's talking about how she's NOT God, just because she spreads her interpretation of his messages. She's simply a "penholder", who doesn't "deserve" all the credit, because she draws so much inspiration from HIM, that it's basically plagiarism: "And all the art that I supposedly create.... is simply a faded reflection, of something he's already made."

i think this song is absoultely magical. it is lovely to every possible degree. it truely shows Flyleaf is not a selfish band. They believe God gave them the skills they have and they are absolutely correct. i thank God for Flyleaf! he created an amazing band that as changed my life forever, God Bless.

I totally agree with you on this. I always hate how the usual songs are all pretty much a facade. I like Flyleaf cuz they're very straightforward and pretty much tell it as it is. I also think a lot of songs make it where they don't sin and sometimes they take the credit, where Flyleaf pretty much is saying "I wouldn't be here without HIM, I refuse to take the credit. I'm imperfect" I love it
I'm glad that made you feel better. I see so many women, especially young ladies only focused on the outside. I find a woman interesting when she has refined her mind, her heart, her soul.

When maricles happen and you are touched by the holy spirit and seen what the Spirit has done in others physically, emotionally, psychologically...you know He's real. When you see that one flower admist the weeds, you know he's real.

you are partially right, she is being humble in saying that she doesn't deserve the credit and praise, but she doesn't say it comes naturally,the line "I'll show you what he did," is referring to God. All she is doing is passing along the praise she gets from people to whom she thinks deserves it for giving her what she is. It's a praise song, she later even talks about his mercy... believe it or not

Ironic that their name is Flyleaf. As if when you would open the story to this bands life I feel like this would be published right on the flyleaf of the book.
i think she's saying that she cant take the glory for all of her songs, because although she held the pen and wrote them, she feels that god deserves the credit.

I read a few pages back, and someone said that Lacey was their idol. That's ironic; in this song she's basically saying that her songwriting is divinely inspired and therefore she shouldn't and won't be credited & idolized for it. I came here to listen to this song just to discipline myself for idolizing her & technology. If I credit Lacey for anything, it's gonna be for being a good sister in CHRIST. be proud in the Lord.

This song is so true, God gives us the talent to do something, and usually we just take the credit for it. Its good that Lacey tells everybody that she doesnt deserve the credit, everyone thinks , wow such talent, and they dont even take a minute to realize that it was God who gave her the talent. Awesome song.
manifests itself in any way, whether musical or lyrical. As a musician myself, I rarely write anything without first being inspired by some source. Then once it starts the ball just keeps rolling, it takes very little effort, as if somebody else is in fact writing the song along with you.
She sounds so much like Alanis Morissette especially during the chorus. I like this song alot this and Supernatural are my favorites from them.

really bummed i can't get this on itunes music, for whatever reason. regardless, it's still one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard, even still, 11 years after i first heard it.
they actually have a lot of older songs from their days as passerby army that aren't published. i'm not sure how old this one is, but it's not a new song. i think they should publish an album of all their old stuff though, because it rocks!! penholder is one of my favorite songs!!

People ^^ stop trying to find a meaning. A song isn't meant for you to find it's meaning. It's meant for you to enjoy, and take what you need from it. Each lyric means something different to different people ^^
One of the Flyleaf guys said on the flyleaf website said their songs are very influenced by their faith, but they refuse to use their God as a marketing ploy. Sometimes the song is a "me to God" perspective, for example Perfect, All Around Me, and Red Sam, and sometimes they're more about being in a place, or being affected by a place, which isn't "healthy" such as "I'm So Sick" and "Breathe Today." But all of their songs are laced with words that reflect their faith.

well, actually, in an interview, lacey said that every one of their songs has something to do with God, u just have to look for it....so yea.
Naturaly I wouldn't listen to any christian rock bands but I don't care if Flyleaf is one of them, they are and incredible band. I don't care if she believes in god I just love the music.
