Flying Tiger sailboat tour - Ep22
Back story on the flying tiger at this link • Sailing Anarchy Back S...
The Flying Tiger 10 M (FT10) is a keelboat designed in 2005 by naval architect Robert H. Perry. Built by Bill Stevens at Hansheng Yachts in Xiamen China, and marketed by Hiptrader LLC, the FT10 is intended as an affordable one-design club racer. With its light displacement (4900 lbs), open transom, and bowsprit that supports a large masthead asymmetrical spinnaker it can be classified a sportsboat. In order to allow manufacture in China and global distribution, the boat was designed to fit inside a standard shipping container.
The idea of building an affordable 30 feet sportsboat emerged in 2002 as a heated discussion topic in the on-line forum Sailing Anarchy. A group of avid one-design racers contributed to the definition of the requirements of a low cost 30 feet sportsboat. The group guided Perry through the design of the Anarchy 30 concept boat. Starting from the Anarchy 30 Perry designed the Flying Tiger 10 M during the most part of 2005 in an open forum under the scrutiny and the input of the forum members, in a process that is probably unique in the history of American yacht building.

Outstanding! Bad ass boat! Would love to drive this. If I decide to summer in SoCal 2021...Im going to start doc walking. I gotta get back on boats. My history includes. Lasers, 5Os, J24s, Hobie33, several early Farr’s. Your vids are fantastic and the backstory series will be great! Thanks for this stuff
I’m loving these videos! Not sure if you’d ever travel but down in New Orleans there is “Tiare” a cal 48 that is absolutely beautiful. A racing machine too! I believe SA did an article on her in the past

Awesome vid Scott! As an owner of a FT10 I was really looking forward to this one. Glad you called out the issues and told it like it is! I’d be interested in the mods you did or have seen, especially on the f-in motor well door.

we put too much money in fixing the trap door, but at least it opened and closed without too much difficulty. the well itself as you know is shit, but nothing much to be done there. other than all new standing and running rigging, some paint and wax, we really didn't do too much to the boat. just got new sails and sailed the bejezus out of it!
I really like every time you review a one design, my first exposure to one design was in the bounty class (a 40 ft) my next was the c&c35 and then j24 moved down to the ensigns after that.
“This is a full on cruiser yo” 😅. I was looking forward to Scott’s vid on this one. It was cool too see it hashed out in the infamous SA forums and killer story of how it came about. A container fitting 10m performance boat for less than $50k new with carbon fiber stick was a lofty goal but well done by all.

Right, how do you cruise with 7 people in that...
Quote: "Yeah, I had girlfriend, kids...I wouldn't do it again!" Good life lesson.
Looks fast ....and tippy! The tall dog-house seems.... tall. Must be fun to sail and nice to have the ability to cruise / camp. Lots of quirks, anyway, the outboard motor-well is a better design than our old Columbia 22.
"This boat has a story no other boat has" actually, the Formula 16 catamaran class has about the same story and more. It was created by international sailors and builders in the Catsailor internet forum from Mary Wells and Rick White before 2001, when the class was born. Not too long ago, a particularly well built, equiped and tuned Formula 16, AHPC's Viper, was considered for the olimpic games together with the newly designed Nacra 17.

yup. not that clean ;)
Looks a bit like my Tirion 28 (Dutch made!) including the backstay solution. Are there any videos coming up soon? Love them!
Interesting on the outboard, I sailed a j24 and lifting that motor off the bracket each time was dangerous and then the motor was stored on the cabin sole.
The FT10 rules so hard. I think we have the only 2 left on the southeast coast at LLSC, QMN and Renegade. If you wanna come up and race, get in touch!
Thanks for introducing me to a boat I had never heard of. And wow, does it look cheaply built!

surprisingly, the hull is quite nice.
This and Hobie 33 which one is better guys for traveling also I think the 8-ft beam on the hobby is the ideal... Please do let me know what you think between the two thank you
Do you have a 12 Meter or IACC boat video planned? Maybe a Stars & Stripes?
Is that an Ericson 35-3 next door? Would be cool to hear you do a comparison to your 35-2.

in a light to medium air race, they'd be really good.
Still looking for you to take the show on the road. Lots of C&C (not the mega 30 or 115) here in the great lakes still out there scooting along. I happen to know someone with a 35mk3 that has a few bells and whistles but still a bit cruisey down below.

Come to think about it, lots of T10's here in chicago too, they regularly get 20 boats on the line any given weekend. Perfect retro-race boat

we are going to at some point. in fact this month we were planning to go up to sf but cvd19 is pretty bad right now
What does it rate in PHRF? We have hull 78 and rate 48. We get completely smoked by Melges 32 (rating 15) and J111s (rating 35). Admittedly we’re average and the boat isn’t completely optimized but we’ve made all the updates you noted.
@SailingAnarchyUSA

the ft's have 3 ratings in so cal. buoy is 54, rlc is 45, downwind is 42. the boats have a pretty narrow maximum performance range and it is anything 10 and under. we beat the melges 32 here way more than they beat us, and we never lost to a j/111 in the few times we have sailed against them. do you have good, fresh sails? do you have a heavy #1, do you have a code zero? are you sailing with at least 7 people?

@@SailingAnarchyUSA working on new sails, including a new adjustable head stay to replace the furler so we can get a larger #1 head sail... no code zero yet ($$$)... sailing with 5-7...boat seems very sensitive to rig tune so we’ve been focussing on that but heavy air, particularly upwind as you noted, remains a challenge
