Flying the PMDG 737-800 from Stansted to Rotterdam in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Ойындар

A viewer of the channel messaged me a few days ago with a raft of questions about configuring the 737-800 in Microsoft Flight Simulator, with a particular concern for managing guidance, controlling LNAV and VNAV, and then the transition to "Approach Mode" and ILS while on approach.
It's been a while since I've flown the 737, so this is necessarily not a "reference flight", but we do talk about the various subjects along the way, and the functional interconnects between the different navigation modes and programming required in the FMC and MCP to achieve a given route.
Here's a link the procedure I used to get the plane started:

Disclaimer - I'm obviously not a 737 pilot, so I might not do everything "by the book", and will miss out lots of tests and validations along the way. I will also inevitably wonder "what happens if I do this?" - which I nearly did on approach :) A good example - after the flight I noticed that I didn't come back out of STD barometric pressure during descent - there's always something :) Talking, explaining and doing is HARD. I even talked about the local barometric pressure en-route - I just never got around to setting it! This is why crews use checklists :)

    @@jonbeckett Don't forget also, that in the real world, there are TWO pilots splitting the workload between them! We don't have that luxury unfortunately, which is why I just suffocated 182 passengers on a flight from EHAM to EGNT (Newcastle) because I forgot to turn the packs on after starting the engines during pushback! As they say; 'S**t happens' LOL PS it also happened to be the best landing I have ever performed in the PMDG 737-800, so some consolation I suppose.

    You sounded quite nervous tonight Jonathan. I’ve not watched the whole video yet, but I’d just like to say your content is excellent. Don’t ever feel the need have to produce content continuously. Take a break. :)

    I've been watching several PMDG 737 videos - all cover important points from start up to shut down. They vary in duration, scope, and presentation. This one excels in all of those aspects. The result is the most efficient video to allow one to perform a complete first flight in the PMDG 737 in MSFS. Thank you.

    One option that I find works best for me is that I change the bindings for the preset views to the 10key number pad. That way, it saves me from having to press ctrl+nbr when all I have to press is a single nbr key.

    cruise altitude is 15,000 and and the minimum altitude is 1000 .You can aim to 1000 directly.not 15,000 to 10,000 after you have to aim again to 9000 after that you have to aim again to 5000 just do it once and the airplane will follow the procedures that in the flight plan

    My controller is pretty low-grade, and I don't have pedals, so I end up using the auto-land on my PMDG 737-600 pretty much every time. If you give it all the info it needs, it's pretty reliable and smooth. Or at least that's been my experience.

    What a helpful video this was. This is my first foray into study level aircraft, and this video has helped me tremendously to learn to fly these awesome aircraft. I’m currently flying the 900 and I’m having an issue with the bank angle on AP/AT. Using LNAV the aircraft is turning too steep and I get the bank angle warning. As a result of the over exuberant turn the aircraft overshoots the turn and then has to hard turn in the opposite direction. Again it banks too sharply and overshoots its correction. And so on. Is there a way of limiting the bank angle on AP? Thank you.

    I noticed you landed the plane in standard barometric pressure. Could that be causing the warning?

  • @jonbeckett

    @jonbeckett

    No - that won't cause a warning. I missed several details while talking - it's always a risk when explaining things - sometimes you miss things out :) That's why real crews have more than one person, and a checklist :)

    Ms have suggested that most addons for 2020 should work for 2024, I think the expectation is that those to ms standards like pmdg will work in 2024.
